Couldn't get a proper screenshot in fullscreen, so I thought I'd take this atleast

Either way, this is pretty cool for your first game jam. It's definitely a lot better than my first few game jam games lol. There were a few major issues I had with the game though

The player sprite really needed more animations, or atleast more noticabley different animations. The jump animation especially could've been a little different. It kinda made it hard to platform sometimes since it was a little too similar. As someone who can barely draw themselves, I get that art can be hard, especially in the constraints of a jam. You could animate the player through other ways such as squashing or stretching the sprite.

Also I'm not sure if this is a bug, but if you hold jump you basically continuously in place, or kinda do a quick jump off any ledge that's close enough. ( Could honestly be it's own feature with a little more polish though lol )

There were a number of times where the player was basically rendered behind the sprite next to them, like the treasure chests on the first floor, and some parts of the clock.

I also think the platforming section with the gears was actually pretty interesting, but it felt slightly janky with how you were supposed to climb them so to speak. Nothing necessarily wrong with it, but maybe it could've used a little more polish.

All in all, I'd say this was pretty cool for your first jam. Good going :)

The controls are a bit cramped, maybe use the arrow keys instead of WASD

Other than that, the physics are a bit jank and the camera is pretty zoomed in

I think if you add a bit more polish with animation and music, this could be a fun lil game

Hey, thanks for the review. Just so you know, you can use either arrow keys or wasd, it's not exclusive to one or the other.

Hey, thanks for the review. You can use WASD or the Arrow Keys. The ability keybinds are all on the left, though.

Congratulations on your first jam submission!
:)

I would suggest 2 changes (after the jam):
1) jumps feel better when the player goes up quicker than they fall down (we want to be in the air quickly, but we want to have time to decide where to land); and
2) consider adding a hint about how to get past the "wrench" obstacle - I got stuck there, and I wasn't sure what to do (is it a well timed jump? am I missing an ability or an upgrade? is there a different, secret path? etc.).

Developer

Hi. The wrench hint was to grab the combat upgrade at the start.

Good job on having a functional game for your first jam.

This game is simple but fun to play. Having the player be forced to go through the loop helps the game go well together. The artwork and the audio are good, but backgrounds (for both) really would have made this game a lot better. Having lore to the game is really good and sets you well past so many games that ignored narrative, so that is a bright spot for me personally.

Again, this game is decent, but for a one man, 96 hour, first game jam game? Truly insane work. Great job!

Hello, Thank You! I played your game too, I loved your art for the game, but I couldn't get through the first door even when opened. Either way, thanks for reviewing it!

simple but fun platformer!

interesting concept for a platformer to need to buy upgrades when you can't get past an obstacle. Good job!
