The cartoon strips in the beginning was so high quality! The gameplay itself was satisfying but minimalistic. I'm not sure if the purple gem was supposed to unlock a new ability? I was stuck after that, but had fun until then!

It's like the world's shortest Metroidvania

Cool concept, though I think I might've gotten soft-locked towards the end of the loop (also, you can jump into the void, so that's fun lol)

Music slaps

I like the idea of giving player controls one by one, cool art too

Submitted(+1)

Cool idea, unlocking the characters movement options each loop is a really neat idea. I did encounter a bug where I was spawning on the wrong side of the wormhole to progress but I just restarted and was able to beat it. Overall good submission, well done!

Submitted(+1)

Well done! Glad I saw this in the discord.

Very cool concept that you unlock more movement options as you progress!

Definitely something you could expand on!

Well done! :D

Neat how you unlock movement options

Giving a new movement each loop was an interesting take on theme. Also really like that pixel art character design, it looks great along with some nice animations. Overall good work! :)

Really cool concept ! Getting new mecanics each loop is a good idea, I just wish this was more obvious what you get with every piece but maybe you wanted it that way to make the player puzzled on the new possibilities.

Good job !

Developer(+1)

We did aim to have the player experiment (get it?) with their environment and controls as they go through the game. Getting the player to take their time (wow, there's a lot of these) with adjusting to the new upgrades could cause some to loop back a couple more times than others and extend the overall time it takes to complete the game, which helps since it's so short.

Glad to hear you enjoy the concept and mechanics. Thanks for playing!

the agony you feel when the time-warpy-purple thing hits you just before you reach the shard. Heartbreaking! Really felt it. Nice story, nice setting, nice artwork. well done!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for playing.

This has the potential to be a seriously rad platformer. Great story hook and I like the ability unlock.

One small issue I found was heading left there is a dip in the floor that you can't jump high enough to get out of (unless there is something I missed that allows you to do that later).

Developer

Yeah, the dip to the far left next to the double jump crystal is impossible to get out of once you're in. Initially, we just had a gap there so if you fell through, you'd fall off the level too fast for the black hole to catch up and reset you. I intentionally made the pit a trap to artificially increase the playtime of the game a little since it was so short. And also to troll someone by making them squirm and panic as the hole inevitably consumes you and your progress on that section just before the goal. Very happy to hear I have at least one victim. >:)

Glad you enjoyed the concept. Thanks for playing!

I liked the mechanic of unlocking new movement abilities as you go! I think a better visual indicator for how close the portal is getting would increase the sense of urgency. Sometimes I could barely see the portal when I was pulled back in time.

Developer

That would be a good addition. We really just used an exponentially growing circle for the collision shape so the sprite can be a bit off the bigger it gets since it uses rotating fins. I imagine we could make a distance tracker that gradually turns red and shakes like the text effect on the starting phrase "Find the pieces".

Good idea. Thanks for playing!

Really enjoyed! It was a cool effect to be able to gain abilities that carried into the next loop. I really liked the story of the scientist and the time portal being the thing that causes the loop too. It's my favorite narrative I've seen so far! The portal did expand very quickly though, so when I was struggling with the double jump, I wasn't able to make it very far. But the guidance of it pushing you in one direction or the other was helpful!

Developer(+1)

The double jump section requires that you use nearly the full extent of both jumps by holding W until you reach the peak to get to the platforms. I just watched my brother struggle with it for a good 8 loops. XD

Happy to hear you like the narrative. We had a lot of fun brainstorming the idea. Thanks for playing!

I really enjoyed it although it was a rather short. What I would add is more gameplay a better UI style and a better jump mechanic, but all in all, Well Done!

Developer(+1)

We had a section planned after the final crystal to be able to teleport as the whole lab gets consumed and disintegrates, but we ran short on time trying to test if it was feasible. Same with the UI, had an idea to map the crystal colors to the unlocks, but we hoped the gradual lighting of the buttons would be enough. Most players were able to figure it out by the 2nd and 3rd loop.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it overall. Thanks for playing!

you’re welcome.

The graphics and intro are very very nice :D I like the unlocking of controls as you play, almost like a metroidvania, and done creatively! It would have definitely been nice for some visual cue you unlocked a double jump, which left me confused for a while. But the black hole effect was an awesome and clever way of doing a timed challenge, like that a lot! Congrats on the game!

Developer

Glad to hear you enjoyed the concept and the thematic application of it. We worked hard to put it all together. Sorry about the confusion, we definitely should have put something in there to signal the double jump.

Thanks for playing!

Not a bad take on the "gain extra mechanics as you play" style gameplay. The conveyance of the expanding field was both a bit too harsh and kind of hard to read at first, which would have been alleviated if the levels weren't as big as they were. The feel was mostly solid save for trying to jump up the sides of objects.

Developer

Trying to balance the level size with the growth rate of the black hole was a challenge. We made the level as big as it is to try and get enough content in there without making it "just another long hallway". Definitely could have touched up there. Glad we got the controls to feel right though!

Thanks for playing!

Interesting take on on a metroidvania in a way. Nice work!

Nice idea, and beautiful intro artwork. Timing is tight but good !
As a player, I would have liked to feel more freedom, and more difficulty to find the pieces.  This needs more levels, to get this nice idea further.

Developer

Definitely agree. We had a final sequence planned where the last crystal unlocks the teleport ability and the laboratory starts to disintegrate but had to cut it due to "time constraints" XD

Thanks for playing!

Game was okay. Was confused by the lack of controls at first, and then again when I had to double jump. I like the premise and the music. Did not like the music stopping before I finished

Developer

You're right, it does need a few more signals to indicate that certain controls are locked until you get the corresponding crystal. We tried to implement the blinking lights in the HUD and make a note in the description that mentions controls to hint at it, but there will be players who will need to be led to water. Glad you were still able to find enjoyment in the game despite the issue.

Thanks for playing!

Nice little game. Took me a bit to get that I don't have all my controls and unlock them through the shards, but then I had a good time. I liked the music. Was very fitting. The double jumps could have maybe been a little less tight, since you really need two max size jumps to get to the platforms, but thats honestly nitpicking and one could argue its justified, since its the way to the last piece.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! We tried to find some ways to create a little difficulty, but without too much issue as we expected players to probably get looped by the black hole a few times just due to exploring parts of the lab that weren't on the way to a crystal. We actually had a final sequence planned that would have been a little more difficult than the double jump timings that involved a teleport mechanic. Glad you enjoyed the game overall though.

Thanks for playing! :)
