How does your game fit the theme?
Heirloop follows the theme by portraying a never-ending cycle of violence. When you kill the boss, you restart the level as that boss' heir. With different abilities and weapons, you're ready to take revenge. As will the heir of your enemy.

I really like the idea of the generations eternally fighting over who last killed the previous lord of the castle.
:)

However, as another user said, the combat is not very smooth.
The hitboxes for everything are bigger than the sprites, there don't appear to be any i-frames, we can't tell when an enemy is preparing to attack, and there's no feedback that our hits landed (flashing the enemy red, or play a grunting sound or something would be good).

This is a cool idea. The gameplay feels a bit unfair. I get the feeling my hitbox is too big, and it’s a bit hard to tell when the enemies are going to attack without any indication animation.

hey cool game! I was playing the game without reading the description and was like dude when does it end?! Then I got the gist of it haha. Also I don't know if this was just for me but my character always wanted to walk to the top left even without me touching anything.. The art is wonderful by the way! great job

Hmm. Might be a bug with the movement not resetting properly on a restart. Glad you enjoyed it though. Appreciate your feedback!

so the final boss is me. me vs past me. this is a great take on the theme 10/10. beautifully made game from the art to the concept to the gameplay. i just wish you guys added some weight to the attack such as some camera shake, maybe some particles. but overall that's a great game and i wish you continue developing it afterwards

Game felt a bit janky (for example, I wasn't able to walk close enough to enemies for the sword to appear over them as I swung,) but I really loved the art. It looked really smooth and kinda cute. Love the idea of you continuing the loop as the heir of your dead father.

Nice game! Looks really good, I like the take on the theme! The enemies could use some feedback when they're hit, I had some seams in the textures, but a nicely crafted game overall, good job!

I loved the artwork, it was really fun to play.

Violence begets violence I suppose... Loved the cute art and the concept of repeatedly avenging my father was cool and hilarious. I will say I wish slightly more adjusted inside the castle every time I fought my way through, still a cool idea though. Good job!

NGL I LOVED the artwork and sound design pretty well done the only thing i wish was there was to be able to deflect the incoming projectiles.

I am really surprised roguelike don't tap into avenging the fallen concept, this part is great!

As for controls / mechanical feedback: sadly we can't update games anymore, but if we you are taking it to full release 2d combat golden rules are:
- your attack collider is a bit bigger than animation that shows it
- your character collider is a bit smaller then the sprite
- some of  screenshake /  jitter / pushback is almost necessary for melee, otherwise your attacks feel like they didn't meat any resistance.
- If we are talking samurai theme I would probably also expect moving / flashing forward slightly with each attack and maaaybe parry bullets if attack cooldown is long.

Thanks for your feedback. We appreciate it.

Glad you liked it despite its flaws. Yeah, this was the first top down game we made and we definitely learned a lot of dos and don'ts when creating one. You bring up a lot of important design fundamentals and we'll definitely take it under advisement.

Little tangent, but when playtesting we thought about a parry mechanic but we didn't have the time to implement it. If we ever expand it that's definitely going into the player kit.

I see very much potential in the setting. Really like the artwork!

Great Artwork, Great Narrative, Great Idea. Love the idea of the cyclical murder of fathers whom you have to avenge. However, the combat is lacking a lot of feedback, the attacks are quite slow and due to the game's very small content, it gets boring after only a few minutes. Would love to see this game with more characters, as well as some better combat, as the Idea is great.

Thanks for your support. The game is only meant to be played for a few minutes but you bring up valid shortcomings. A lot of our time was spent on the swapping mechanics and the narrative framework so some things didn't get the attention they deserved. In hindsight we should have included some flashing effect to improve the damage feedback. We think this could have potential as a roguelike, maybe a secret ending that breaks the cycle. Thank you again for your time and feedback. We appreciate it.

Very nice game! I love the artwork and storyline. Love the idea of coming back as the heir of the boss. Great job!

Developer(+2)

Thank you! We are quite proud of the premise. There's a lot of potential to expand this, we think.
