This is awesome. I love the art, and you did a great job on the map; the style is really satisfying, but it’s very readable. I would have liked to have a bit more detail for each of the locations. The information was generally easy to digest, but I was confused by Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser; I was unfamiliar with the heroes, but I was more confused that they weren’t mentioned in the text beyond the cover. The layout is great, though a bit more white space and a few extra line breaks would have made it easier to read.

When I was reviewing the jam entries, I downloaded a bunch of PDFs and read them without looking at their itch pages. I felt there was some important info missing, namely that this was written for OSE, especially since the cover says “for OSR games.” I think it would have also been helpful to bold and/or underline the names of monsters which have statblocks.

I really like the real-world game you’ve created with the search for tokens—very creative, and I love a mechanic that changes up gameplay—though I do think I would have a hard time keeping them all hidden during the first few hours of play!

The content of the adventure, the timeline, the characters, and the nature of the fort defense are all rich and inspiring, and I would have a fantastic time running this game! Excellent interpretation of the title they gave you; it’s very clever and the adventure fits the vibe perfectly. I’m a sucker for seaside adventures, too, so I’m hoping to use this in the future :-) Really great work!

Thank you for your very thoughtful post, I hope you enjoy running it! Yes, at some point for space reasons I foolishly removed a line saying the paragraph on the first page is the premise of the fictitious short story the adventure is based on, the PC's are put in the position Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser found themselves in, this is why they are not present in the adventure.

Really like the themeing of a receding tide signaling new locations and events. Some really nicely written prose in this adventure to. Awesome work!

This has a great deal of playable detail, with varied adversaries and hazards. The timeline, ingredients minigame, and avoiding interruptions add a strategic layer. The theme and artwork are also on point. Nice work!

Thanks. You know, I believe that you're the first person to comment on the ingredients mini-game.

Fantastic presentation & unique among the 60+ modules I’ve rated thus far, being a defensive adventure. Great pacing & ramping up of tension, and the encounters themselves were very fun & flavorful. Great job!

Nothing says "Appendix N" quite like dropping it in Nehwon and name-dropping Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser!

I really like the encounters found here! There's some good variety mixed in that still feels like it makes sense with the goals of different characters. The mechanic of the tide pulling back to reveal stuff in the intertidal zone is very fun and plays with the title of the adventure really well.

Very bold to just snag Frazetta's cover for Witch of the Dark Gate and name drop Lankhmar lore.  No rubbing off serial numbers here.  Splashing over with content, like sea water during a full moon.  Literally Leiber - AKA give me Leiberty or give me Swords against Death.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks, glad to hear it evokes Lieber. Make sure you have the final submitted file, the cover art is actually an editted poster for the film 'The Witch Who Came from the Sea'.

I imagine the inspiration really came from the adventures of Fafhrd and Greymouse, especially the story where they have to recover the mask. A tower defense adventure is something I don't remember seeing before, and I was quite interested.

Printed at A5, I think this text is going to be hard to read and it feels like it could be streamlined somewhat, while still keeping the great siege of the fortress intact. This adventure absolutely nails the vibe, though.

Developer

Thanks. Yeah, it can be a little dense. The font sizes used are either 9.5 or 10 so it was ok, to me at least, when I test printed it.

Love the timeline structure. It makes great use of the smaller page count and keeps things interesting. This is incredibly inspiring to read, and really gets to that pulp fantasy tone so perfectly. Incredible work, worthy of the author that inspired it.

Developer

Thank you so much, that's such high praise.

There's a lot of usable material packed into these three pages. I'd need to re-read it a few times and take lots of notes before running it in order to do all the little details justice, but to me that's the mark of a worthwhile module. Timeline adventures are great fun and ensure that the action keeps advancing. Nicely done.

Developer

What a thoughtful comment, thank you. It's the little details that make all the difference.

The theme and writing of weird fiction Appendix N influences ooze out from this adventure! I really like the cover choice as well! I like the Events and Revealed Locations, making the adventure dynamic and not a straight up dungeon crawl.

Developer

Thank you, I'm really pleased to hear you can feel the Appendix N in my entry.

Are you Fritz Leiber reincarnated?

Developer

Wowie, I'm happy to hear that I have embodied the spirit of my inspiration that well.

The vibes are immaculate! This turned out great and looks really fun to run!

Developer

Thank you, that's high praise and nice to hear.

Quite dense, but all important. Really really cool. Love that it's Grey Mouser!

This is good entry. Well done. You nailed the theme and delivered something unique.

I think this really nails the Appx. N look and feel, both in visuals and in writing. I don't think I have seen a defensive scenario like this before, it looks extremely rad!

Developer

Thanks a bunch. Defensive scenarios are great and make for a really fun change of pace. I find they are surprisingly good for new players too.

cool art, fun idea, very “appendix n”.  Loving the old-school vibes with the layout.

Developer

Thanks, I couldn't be more pleased to hear that.

I really liked the premise of the submission, being transported to a fort that you have to defend while a ritual is being completed is very cool.

To make this better, I'd suggest being more concise with your writing.

Developer (2 edits)

Thanks, defensive scenarios are really underrated.

I agree the first few paragraphs can appear a little wordy, but once you get into it, I feel the main body of the adventure (the fort, its 9 rooms and the 14+ events of the siege, timeline and spells) is pretty concise. It's all very playable and I thought about what did/didn't need to be explained and described. Maybe I was a little ambitious with how much to include which makes the entry seem a little full. If I could spread the entry over another page, you'd see it.
