Very nice story. I like the text-based game style. I didn't know this was a style of game. So it was good to see.

It was refreshing to see a text-based game in the jam, and this one pulled me in with its unique writing style and neat presentation touches the upward scrolling text, the paper styling, and the sound effects all added to the atmosphere. The story is interesting and at times abstract, though it could be clearer in how the protagonist’s memories connect, and a few small details (like the text jump with each line) distracted a bit from the flow.

The biggest opportunity here would be adding interactivity branching choices or decision points could really elevate the experience and make the narrative more impactful. Still, it’s a creative and distinctive entry, and I’d be glad if you also took a moment to try the game I submitted it shares that same spirit of experimenting within the jam.

Nice game with a cool story. You don't see many text-based games in jams, but this game executes the text-based concept very well! Very cool. Well done dude, be proud :)

I think the writing is good but it could be more interactive.

Neat story, and I liked the sound effects,  styling for the papers, and the way the text moved upwards. The story was a little abstract for my tastes and it was hard to connect with the protagonist once they started remembering things (felt a little out of nowhere), but I think that's what you were going for. How the text jumped up and down a few pixels with every line also bugged me a little.

Developer

<3 I’m really glad you noticed the paper styling! I spent a ridiculous amount of time creating the scroll effect. The sound effects were making me nervous, because my editing software is, uh, old school. More attention on editing the narrative might bring out the emotional end I was going for initially.

I thought I’d smoothed out the text jumping. That’s going back on my list of isdues to research.

Thank you so much for your feedback.

The biggest draw of games is not images or sound, it's interactivity.

Using mostly text is perfectly fine, but you need to give players the chance to make some decisions. A shorter game, but with some branching choices, would have been more impactful.

Your writing style is interesting, but I had some trouble understanding the  overall plot.

Developer

Ah, the plot is simple. My game description might need to be clearer about what to expect.

A branching narrative is possible. The player could choose the order of actions and which memories to focus on. Maybe the end would change…. Yeah, I’ll definitely consider that some more. Replace the engine was likely to one better known was likely anyhow.

It was interesting finding a textbased adventure game in a jam. I think its my first time. Its an interesting story and a good idea.

Thank you!

The submission instructions were a little confusing, most of the jam entries I’ve gone through so far seem to ignore them, so I’m trying again with a simpler developer note.

How to play: Go to the game page. Load the game in the page, using your web browser. Click to load each line. A maximum of three lines will be displayed on the page. Guess the situation for you as the main character.

Please be patient with the audio and visual effects if they don’t preload; testing has been inconsistent.

Ten days is a very short time for one person to put together something new when most of the process is unfamiliar.

The theme: “It’s not what it seems.”

That’s in the story. Not give too much away there, I’ll point out that is meant to be somewhere between the old style interactive fiction that was only text with links and the immersive visual novels found on this site.

Interesting story. Writing is definitely interesting nevertheless and some parts is not easy to make sense. I don't know if it's your style or because English isn't your  native language and I am not saying this as insult if it's coming like that.
But Congrats on your first game jam anyways.

Developer

The way I write short fiction, every word tends to matter. So my 2 AM typos aren’t helping the story any. 😅

I’m glad the writing held your interest until then.

If you want to turn this project into a game. You could try giving the player
something to interact with. If you don't, it's not a game; it's just a text.
If you're confident in your stories, great. You can try harder to turn it into a game next time. Good Job!

A textbased game is a game...

Developer

Technically, “Snared Spirut” is interactive. The only way through the story is to interact with the screen.

Interactive fiction has been considered games since its origins.

I agree I could add more to it, tho. Parts of the coding was new to me, so it all took up the jam to work through. Now there’s time to experiment more.

Thanks you for reading.
