This is a really good concept for a balatro-like!

I played the game for a bit on stream and I need to go back and play more, I feel like this would be an easy game to get lost in with that "one more round" mentality.

I think it would be nice if there was a reminder during the shows of what combos should be on display... I fear I immediately forgot as soon as the tutorial screen went away. I think there's definitely something here, though. The art style is VERY cute and the gameplay loop is super solid. Good stuff!

I played a round on stream around 1:09:00

Fun card-like strategy, I like the shows although it was a lot to take in at first for how to win! Definitely could use a little cozy music in the background to help bring the whole vibe together, but I really like the cute animations and the gameplay is definitely there! For me, the window is not big enough and some of the game gets clipped (I wasn't able to see or use  my ribbons, and I only got a small part of the crate in the bottom left corner in my viewable window). I wish there was a fullscreen option!

Other than that man, I think this is a really solid foundation. Looking forward to future releases!

I like the core game play and idea.  Creating a strategy game out of breeding animals is certainly novel and intriguing.

Parts of the screen are cut off due to the limited size of the window.  I was unable to see ribbons I had purchased.  You should change the game window on the itch page and tick the fullscreen.  This can be done without altering your game.

I wasn't really sure how the scoring worked.  It wasn't clear what the combos score.  I seem to do ok just by placing the sheep randomly.  The hazards strike randomly, it doesn't really feel fair.  Perhaps positioning could be more strategic.   It would have been nice to mix multiple traits.  For example, size or shape.  That would have added more choice.

I would add a restart game button instead of telling people to reload the entire page.

The art styles are very mixed.  You have realistic looking backgrounds against hand painted art.  It would've been better to forego the backgrounds and just paint a quick and simple blue sky.

This has clear potential, but there's a bit of work to be done.

Thank you for the feedback! Yes, ribbons unfortunately get cut off on the sides of the screen if a lot of them get bought. I plan to add a new mechanic that will remedy this in the future. I tried adding fullscreen but unfortunately the game isn't built for it so you end up seeing the boundaries of the game world (the gray void in Godot) so I had to remove it for now.

Jam Host(+1)

Hello! Welcome to Feedback Quest 8! My name's Hythrain, a co-host and one of the streamers for this event! This feedback is being written live as I stream your game! If you're interested in seeing my live reaction, let me know and I can send you a link to the VOD once it's posted to YouTube!

So my normal approach for any game in these events is simple: I get the game, make sure it's not a virus, then play it with as little information on how to play as possible. This way, I can judge how intuitively someone can figure out the game. Only if it's obvious that I need to read more will I do so. I note this so you can get a sense where some of these feedback comes from. In addition, I want to note that feedback and rating are different; don't use this feedback to gauge what I'll rate, nor should you view my rating as entirely indicative of my feedback.

While I understood the concept of the mechanics (the whole dominant and recessive genes), what I didn't get was what each symbol meant. I also quickly understood how you were meant to score points, yet at the same time I also didn't? Like, I knew making combos would get me scored and understood some of the combos, but I didn't understand how much it would give per score and how score was totaled.

I also didn't understand how to do mutations. Maybe it's because you only get to pick from four random sheep you have for breeding instead of selecting from them all, but I never once saw any indication of any wild colours besides pink.

With that said, I have suggestions for how this game could be improved. First, allow the player to choose from all of their sheep when breeding. In addition, when listing  the colour combos that can come out of a breed, give percentages for the likelihood of that colour popping out. That way, players have a better idea of what they're going to get. I'm also going to suggest allowing the player to do multiple breeds, and instead have a system where once a sheep has been used in breeding it can't do so again for a certain number of shows.

Next, instead of going into the show with all of your sheep, have the player pick the sheep they want to take. Keep things to a maximum of 10 sheep. That way, if they have a lot of different sheep then they have to pick what they want to bring.

Next, make it that the hazards are random but that the player knows what the next hazard will be before they pick their sheep for the show. This allows them to pick their sheep based around the hazard yet also encourages them to keep a variety of sheep.

After this, make ribbons bound to the sheep you first put them on instead of them resetting each show. This makes it important for the player to carefully choose who they give a ribbon to.

Lastly, get more variety of sheep colours and combos. Right now, certain combos and options are very limited.

All of this should give a great deal of variety and expansion on the gameplay, and make the player feel like they are more in control than simply being trapped by lots of RNG.

Hi, thanks for playing my game! Yes, I would love a link to the VOD. Live reactions and feedback are extremely helpful, and I'm curious to see what your chat thought as well!

I had some fun playing this. I needed 3 or 4 runs to reach the end. On the first runs I did not completely understand the mechanic, but once I figured it out it was not very hard to complete the levels.

I like the concept to build your deck using genetics, but maybe it needs a bit more explanation and an incentive to breed towards a specific goal. Some mechanic so that I can try to create sheep with a specific combination of color and tags.

These are things i noticed:

  • I think the money income is a bit to high. Event on the first visit to the shop I could buy multiple things, which is a bit overwhelming on the first play
  • I did not fully understand how the genetics work in the game
  • I first tried to get as many different colors as possible, but that does not seem to be a good strategy: When I get a sheep with a new color, but with tags like pastel + rare it does not fit in my deck. It seems to be better to have only three different colors, but all the same tags.
  • The graphics style is a bit inconsistent: Like a drawing in the front, photorealistic in the background, and "sketch"-style for the rest. Maybe align it a bit...
  • Maybe also add a mechanic where you can go for different combos with the tags - something where you also need different tags

The game definitely has potential!

I thought this was a very cute presentation for a very interesting deckbuilder-type! Some notes:

  • Breeding the sheep is the most interesting thing about the game, your unique mechanic, so I want to do more of it each breeding phase and spend less time on the stage phase.
  • I'd like to right click to place a sheep in the next available slot rather than dragging.
  • The limited sound you already have in was pretty gratifying for making combos.
  • Some other comments liken this to Balatro, and I see it; but your mechanical narrative doesn't like up cleanly like Balatro's does (Make better hand = make better results). A "rarer" sheep type isn't necessarily a "better" sheep type, and I don't have a mental model of the Hierarchy of Sheep Rarities for you to lean on anyway. Consequently I think the stage show should be about what the sheep do at the show for point results, starting from the basic (Has the Really Fluffy Wool genetic trait) to the silly (Does a Backflip genetic trait), of which your sheep color would be only one kind of trait. Yes this is a suggestion for massively expanding your scope for your little jam game, sorry, but it's also about what kind of story your mechanics are telling.
  • The game name is funny, well done

I’ve been playing and wanted to share some feedback:

  • The breeding mechanic makes sense, but it might be nice if the tutorial forced a more interesting interaction to help players understand it.

  • I wasn’t sure which breeds were “good” or if I should be aiming for a certain type, some clarity here would help.

  • Tooltips are a bit hard to read; offsetting them more and adding a darker background could make them clearer.

  • During breeding, I wished I could drag one sheep on top of another to swap them more intuitively.

  • I really like the sheep art, especially how they look when being dragged! I think the more you lean into that style and appeal the better the game will feel.

  • It would be helpful to view my full “sheep deck” when looking at ribbons.

  • I don’t fully understand why sometimes I can or can’t equip ribbons, maybe that could be explained better.

  • The synergies with ribbons seems like it has potential, but right now it feels a little shallow or else I'm missing something.

Overall, I think the idea of a sheep-breeding deckbuilder is super cute, and I really like the concept. I’d be curious to see how it feels with more refinement!

Just tried for feedback quest - love the interesting mix of genetics/little alchemy and "balatro" style playing. At least in the first "breeding" phase there's probably good opportunity to highlight the "potential outcomes" view cause that seems to carry the most "gameplay info" but it's a little hard to see among the other ui.

It took me a bit to figured out how to equip items, and since the "show" mechanics were a little tricky, I wasn't super sure what my goal was. Do I want lots of rare sheep? Pairs and combos? Or does having variety matter? I do like the sound fx feedback you're already implementing and it made the shows feel really exciting. I'd just say a bit more clarity around what each sound and "score breakdown" moment in the score view means might help.

I sadly failed on my third show, but I did find myself wishing I could breed more sheep during the planning phase (that sounds really weird now that I write it out), but yeah there's probably also some untapped humor around the subject matter as well. But overall, I think this is heading in an awesome direction. I'd keep exploring how to make the mechanics a bit clearer -- this seems like it would be really engaging to interact with if I knew the consequences of the decisions I'm making in the planning and show fazes a bit more clearly.

I had a good time playing this game. Sometimes I had no idea of what I was doing but I earned money so I'm happy. Core concept has a great potential. Sheep are cute!

I felt overwhelmed by the tutorial. ^^' So many things to understand before starting to play! Maybe a more step by step approach would help. Start with just a couple of simple mechanics. Play a couple of rounds to apply them. Add a couple of simple mechanics. Play a couple of rounds to apply them. Repeat... Or maybe just explain the very basics of breeding at the start and then explain one more detail each round?

Also a few things remained unclear to me : Can I breed several times before a show? How to recognize a dominant trait? Why some sheep fall asleep and some not?...

I appreciate it is an early alpha prototype so I'll skip the obvious comments ;)

Well done! You are onto something!

Hey, I gave it a play through.  I'll say the concept is pretty funny, controls are easy, and everything worked as I expected.  That being said, I kind of had no idea what was going on!  I did read the instructions on breading too carefully, but I thought I had the gist.  And I probably should have paid more attention to how the show scoring worked.   I had no idea how to use the power ups I was buying though.  I definitely see what you're going for, balatro but sheep show, with breeding, which I think actually sounds really interesting.   A bit more tutorialization, and more prompts during the actual game will help.  It also seemed like sheep only had two attributes?  Maybe having more attributes, and make them easier to tell what they do.  And they level up, right?  I couldn't tell when/if that was happening.   It would be nice to have a view of the state of your flock at some point.  I'll say for moving forward, better tutorial (as you yourself noted), make everything clearer, and maybe lean into the breeding mechanic, since that seems like a differentiator.

Liked the stylized graphics for the sheep and ribbons. Would help if more of the art matched each other, like for instance the grass texture wasn't a photo but something stylised as well. But overall it still worked and looked good.

Sound was minimal but still effective at giving you feedback along with the visual prompts as you gained in scoring. Music would have been nice but I didn't really miss it not being there.

Tutorial at start was kind of helpful but there may need to be more helpful prompts as the player plays the game rather than front loading it.

Hit some failure page that told me to reload the page. I took that as my cue to stop playing the game.

Overall though I found it somewhat confusing at first -- kind of a game you need to play to get better at and learn all there is to it -- I still found it a fun enjoyable kind of breeding sheep management game. Kind of a browser game you could play to kill some time whilst at work or school.

Thank you for the feedback! When I slapped the tutorial together I felt it was trash, but I'm glad that it was at least somewhat helpful. I built the game in a way that all players could have fun, even if they didn't know all of the combos/systems, and it sounds like I was able to accomplish that. Thanks for playing!
