How does the game fit the theme?
You take risk by casting stronger spells, but these spells not only have a longer and thus more difficult input, they also have a higher chance of backfiring. Thus you are risking it to beat the game.
What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?

Fun game! A bit rough on feedback and impact, I couldn't figure out if the abilities had any effects other than amount of damage they caused. Maybe you could add effects like ice will slow an enemy's attack speed. I would also suggest having a explanation of the abilities when you're on the upgrade screen, and a way to see how much gold you possess. (unless I missed that part, lol.) Also you should consider allowing enter to proceed from the start menu, I got irritated having to pull my hand off the arrow keys to try again.
I like the main mechanism, kind of a cautious button mashing, but if I'm not fast enough, I'm dead. It's pretty difficult, but the concept is fun and the challenge makes you feel trying!
Super difficult, but a very fun concept! I think this is the core of something really fun, just challenging to get into
I'm in love with the combo system, it's simple yet very cool, it makes the finghts pretty intense and is also very rawarding once you start learning the combos. With some more polish and a bit of extra variery, it would be a great game! I really enjoyed it, great job!
Fun game! Super challenging but I really love the concept!
I think the concept is pretty cool, and it definitely fits the theme pretty well. But yeah- game is extremely difficult. By the time I've actually managed to get a heal off- the enemy's already attacked again, and he hurts lmao. Audio would definitely be nice, even if its as simple as when the enemy attacks, when you fail a combo, and when you succeed at a combo. I'd also play around with the inputs- there were a lot of times I tried to push the attack button early and nothing happened, or the arrows overlapped with the existing arrows. But I really like the rhythm game concept, can definitely go far with it!
INCREDIBLE!!!! I love the concept of the spells done like this, really great work! Amazing job! 100/5 star for sure
Thank you so much!!!
This is such a cool idea, and I love the art
It's really difficult though
Thanks for the feedback we definitely will be re-balancing it hahaha .
Glad you liked the art! But yeah, it is quite difficult, we definitely need to tweak that to make it easier hahaha.
I really love this idea! The difficulty level is pretty high from the get-go, especially since there isn't any audio or visual feedback for when you're entering combos (like highlighting the directional arrow you're currently at in the combo, and a sound effect for if you press the correct or incorrect button) but the idea of having to rhythmically enter spells is while blocking incoming attacks is great. Also, good interpretation of the theme! I could see this working super well with more features and polish.
Thanks so much for the review. To be honest we were worried that we didn't do enough for the theme, but your comment does alleviate that fear.
Also i definetly agree about the visual feedback for combos (and to be honest most input other than spell selection) but with this being our first game adding any feature was an uphill battle. however, we do want to continue with this project and will listen to your feedback
I like the rhythm for the spellcasting, has a pretty good flow after getting used to it. The more rewarding spell casts being harder is a really good take on the risk reward theme.
The core game of this is pretty fun, I think more spells that you could swap between loadouts of along with things like random items or upgrades choices that incentivise you to use different spell builds each time could be a really fun way to expand on this.
At first I didn't read about the block button, I was fighting for my life against that bat tanking every hit and spamming heals. Makes a lot more sense after knowing about the block
Thanks for the detailed post, and im glad you liked the game. With the fact that my friends and I are completely new to game dev (and tried to make as many assets ourselves) adding every feature was a struggle so i am glad what we have is fun and interesting.
We are planning to continue this project and will take into account your ideas. (and also make it more obvious that space is a block :))
