Ranked from 59 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

How does the game fit the theme?
Story:
• You are taking a risk by opening a portal to the underworld to consume a biscuit.

Game Mechanics:
• Your SOUL bar (health + stamina) is constantly being drained
• Every attack decreases your SOUL
• The longer the enemy is alive the more SOUL you gain upon defeating it
• Random stat modifiers appear that can either be buffs or debuffs during the waves

These game mechanics incentivise the player to take risks like keeping an enemy alive for the advantage of gaining more soul upon defeating it but at the disadvantage of the enemy having more opportunities to attack, or as another example, choosing to pick up a mystery stat modifier to gain a random buff or debuff.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
All assets and code were created during the game jam, except for 3 sound effects and an explosion animation (sound effects being; the melee attack, the explosion at the end of the game and pickup sounds) . Those external audio files are credited on the game’s page, as a way to thank and acknowledge their original authors for generously making them available for free.

Everything else — the tileset, character and enemy designs, UI design, character movement and animation, original pixel art, music, and sound effects — was created during the jam.

How many people worked on the game?

For some odd reason, raising or lowering volume makes the player character run left a bit.

That being said, it was enjoyable for a bit! However, I felt like I was constantly starving because enemies wouldn't spawn fast enough and I couldn't always find them in time. Regardless, nice work!

I enjoyed the gameplay and controls. The hardcore 8-bit style trade-off of health for survival is really interesting. I feel like a score-based system could also work really well for this game if you wanted to lean more toward the vampire survivor style, but that’s just my personal take.

The wizard's movements are so much fun, and the combat style is exactly what I like. The trade-off between attacking and dodging is really interesting. I have to admit, the powerful spell cannon is just too tempting; my first two deaths were from overusing it, lol.

For the melee combat, it would be great if there was some hit-feedback from the monsters. Sometimes I wasn't sure if my attacks were actually landing. Overall, this is a great game!

Thanks for the feedback! We added a mechanic where if you actually hit the enemy you bounce off them (kind of like hollow knight) but I will look into making that feature more responsive in the future, so thanks!

I loved the aesthetic and main character design.

Always love a good ritual summoning vibe. Good stuff and on theme!

Ty!

The movement is smooth :)

Means a lot since I spent WAY too much time with basic controls then I should have XD

Interesting game! It's a kind of game that I enjoy, so was having fun with it. Definitely difficult. Might play a little better with attack crosshair tracked with mouse.

i had a lot of fun and i love the art hehe !! Great Job :D

Submitted(+1)

I like the game alot but i had 2 things that stood out as minor fixable issues:

- The crosshair went behind the enemies at some points
- the tutorial doesn't really let me hit the dummy

Bear in mind these issues could just be because i didn't play your game well enough so thats always there. Other than these 2 non-issue issues for me the game is a solid package!

Developer(+1)

Appreciate the feedback! The crosshair will be a problem we will patch in future development (maybe even a rework to the melee system), and the tutorial was, I admit, kind of a last minute thing for us. Thanks for playing tho <3

Its actually made really well for last minute, i really enjoyed me! Can you check my game out?  we are first time developers and would appreciate any feedback!

Developer(+1)

Sure, I'll check out your game when I find the time <3

A Really Fun and Different take on the theme would have liked a damage effect for the player but other than that great work!

Submitted(+1)

The game was fun! Opening a portal for a cookie is metal! Loved the combination of soul/stamina, I'm not a big fan of the rng ngl but I enjoyed the game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! The rng is supposed to be for the player to choose as an optional risk factor., but I get where you're coming from, feedback is appreciated <3

Great game, wow! I love the style and the music. Maybe I would’ve added a damage effect for the player (but it definitely doesn’t affect the game that it’s not there). Great work!

It took a while for me to get the idea, but then it was pretty cool. Key is to let the enemies live longer - isn´t it? Whats your strategy? :D
The loud Audio caught me a bit tbh :D Great Entry - thanks for making this game :)

Developer

And thank you for playing it <3

Really fun game, the risk-reward for keeping enemies alive felt really good.
I had a hard time understanding that killing enemies restored your soul so maybe a respawning enemy in the tutorial would be a good idea?

Great game!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, will definitely improve tutorial later. It was kind of overlooked since we made it almost last minute before our submission XD

Cool idea, nice music and interesting main character.

The visuals, music, and gameplay was really nice and cool!! I think having something that visually tells me that I've been hit would be a nice addition to add in the future ^^

Developer

Will improve on that in the future <3

Solid game, nice in overall.
I'm not used to play games with wasd, so it was very difficult for me.
