Awesome work, especially especially especially coming from a solo dev. Love the use of risk in standoffs to make the player think about taking the risk or play it safe. That final enemy is ridiculous though like who in the wild west is gonna have a shield that deflects bullets, Clint Eastwood from a Fistful of Dollars? Goddang. Spectacular work, one of the best in the jam. Congrats on your game!

By the way, which western film is your favorite. For me it's between the basic choice which is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (I mean, with obvious reason) and Rango (also has Clint Eastwood). Idk you seem a film buff to say the least to go for a cinematic western  game that pulls off all the little effects that a western film shot in the scorching desert would have.

Developer

Thank you!
Unfortunately im not westerns or even film buff. The cinematic look was more because i wanted it to look cool and moody and things just fell into place to make the final scene.

I think this is honestly one of my favourite entries, I'm personally a huge fan of the wild west theme and unlocking/testing all of the different ammo types was very fun. I'd absolutely play an expanded version of this with more mechanics/enemies. Great job!

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! Happy you enjoyed it. I have ideas to expand it and make it a bigger game

Fun and polished I agree with the others that maybe multiplayer might be the way to go (maybe even only a local one with two controllers or two parts of the keyboard)

Extremely fun and well polished game. The art style and animations are amazing too. Would be really fun as a multiplayer game. Well done! 🙌

Very cool and polished entry! Love the mood and mechanics, although I felt some inconsistency timing the shots. Especially with the first opponent who made special move and seemingly instant shot after. I guess the game is about learning the timing  as well but maybe slightly longer time frames or extra indicators would have helped.

Well done!

Gameplay is awesome ! The art is pretty good. At first there is a little confusing about timing for shooting since the tutorial showing the time bar but in gameplay I didnt see it. But once I got the gameplay, it is pretty fun!

Amazing entry, the mirage effect on the background is mesmerizing, the visual are 5-star worthy, and the audio is crisp. The loadout upgrades are well thought out, with many possible interesting combos that can be done. Amazing idea and amazing execution. (the gold increasing bullet, when I miss it removes all the added gold from perfect shots plus -10, not just -10 on the current amount, was that intentional?)

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! Im glad you enjoyed it.

Yes that is a bug.

This game my favorite so far. This should be pinned somewhere to show how a great game jam is done. Concise in length and mechanics, innovative, on theme and highly polished. It took me a while to figure out the timing but after that I had a great time. Brillant idea that I have to drag the bullets and put them in one by one into the revolver. It makes it feel more like the real thing.

Developer

Thank you! it was fun making it, I'm glad you liked it

Finally got back to your game and rated it. I really like your entry, it is incredibly well done

Very nice entry, great job doing this solo!

This is only the second 1 button timing dual type game I've played, and both were during this jam.  The different bullet types were a thoughtful way of adding a dimension to otherwise simple gameplay.

My recommendation would be to reveal a bit more information about the enemy moves and effects.

Ladies and gentlemen we have a winner. This project shows what a veteran game developer's work looks like; clean, fun, innovative, and attention to detail and game feel. Producing something so unique yet so familiar and adding a dash of variety. This is a masterclass to game jam games, it doesn't even feel like a game jam game. Truly outstanding, I am totally rooting for this dev to win. 10/10

Developer(+1)

Thank you, I'm flattered 😊! Though i wouldn't call myself a veteran, this is my 3rd jam game and before that an endless graveyard of unfinished projects. Although knowing the workflow at the beginning stages really helps in game jam setting to not stumble on tool usage and just get to implementing ideas.

Best game in the jam, easily - this is extremely well made AND on theme! The visuals are stunning, I love all the animations: the heatwave in the background, the dodge/shield animation, the drawing of the guns, the idles, the berserker steam, the money in the bag - everything! The little drawings on the back of the bullets are an amazing touch and mixing up the bullets felt so fun (Yes, I farmed for gold). The timing of the 'perfect' was bang on, you really get a feel for it and the sound design is spot on with the gun cocking/bullet noises and the throbbing music. What an amazing game, I hope this wins the whole jam honestly. Would love for this to be an app game, you'll see salarymen twitching for perfects on the commute.

Wow, thank you for the glowing review! I had fun making it and have plans to expand it further

The visuals in this game are fantastic! I loved the gorgeous 2D art, the cool mirage effects, and the thoughtful atmosphere. It all comes together in a really stylish and beautiful way!

One of the most fun games I've played so far! Feels really polished. Visuals and animations are great, and the SFX really adds to it too.

When I saw this on discord called my attention and glad I could play it :)

I liked the gameplay and it’s creative to use different bullets in a game like this. There are a few things that I find that could make the game less fun, most of them are related to the restart of the game or when you die once and you keep playing in the same game with no refresh

One is that the glass bullets stay broken or if you put them in the same spot even after dying or changing the match, in my first time I broke 2 and in the next game after a game over, those stayed broke in the same spot, also you final score don't reset and stays the last one

The second enemy, the one who gets angry, stays angry if you play against him again, about this enemy, it’s funny because pretty much you have to do perfect shots to hit him due the way he is, which in some way I like

About the 1st enemy, I like the dodge he does, it gives him style but in some way that dodge makes a bug that if you shoot the same time it ends, you hit a perfect shot but he still does his attack. In one match, it made me lose all the extra rewards I was grinding from gold bullets, like it made it restart the count when I was close to 100 extra coins, but the next match happened the same but it’s like all that extra lost in the past match I gained back? It was a weird interaction with the dodge and the gold bullet

One thing I didn’t like at 1st was that once you die, you lose all the progress, which can be ok, but makes it a bit hard to face the last enemy because I had to grind the gold again to unlock some bullets and then be able to face a new enemy. But after a few tries I didn’t mind because in some way you risk all in order to win and because I found that I just need to do the 1st enemy once, then buy glass bullets, spam it, then change to deathly ones and in 3 matches, I can unlock again the last enemy with good bullets, so isn’t that bad honestly because you 1-2 shot the 1st enemy with those bullets haha

Which leads me to a point I really like about this game and it’s that, really portraits the theme of the jam, the effects of the bullets, the gameplay loop and the moment of the face off to pull off a perfect bullet, all gets together to really feel the risk in the game, which made me really like the game! :D

Also, at 1st I was very bad in the game but after some matches, I got the feeling and it felt like a fair game, you start to pull perfect shots and the bad ones don’t feel unfair, maybe the last enemy can be quick with the shield but didn’t feel bad, which I really like that design of the enemy, that repels the bullet and you get hit by it, but then happens the same with the dodge of the 1st enemy and in one match I stunned her and myself with the same bullet because I shot at the same time the shield ended

To finish this, I find a bit tedious the start of the game after a few runs, filling all the chambers with normal bullets at 1st it’s great because you are teaching the flow of the prep part, that you can pick bullets and put them in a specific order but, after a few runs, I would like to just click the box and fill the chambers because there isn’t another option to pick at the start and already know the flow of the game. Outside that, everything it’s great, the sfx, the mood of each match it’s great, from just seeing the sprites I can feel each character personality, the art it’s great, the gameplay as I said I really like it, everything feels excellent together, it reminds me of an old minigame of kirby that test your reaction but with more possibilities.

Oh also, you can infinitely stun the enemy, maybe it isn't the best play but you can clear any enemy this way, just need to hit a perfect shot.

Nice entry :)

What a through review! I'm thankful you took the time to write it out. Yes there are many bugs that i didn't get to because lot of the features were added at the last day, so i didn't have time to play test thoroughly. As a jam game i think it passes the "playable and gets the basic gameplay loop across" check. I have already many changes in mind to change the gameplay loop so it flows more nicely. Thank you for playing it!

Submitted(+1)

I see, I understand that about adding stuff on the last day, it happens every time I do a jam haha :)

Very good game, visuals were amazing, and gameplay was super fun and addicting. Would love to know how you did the timing system in Godot.

Developer

This is not godot, its made in Game Maker Studio 2

The way i did it is just have a variable for roundTimer that ticks down and compare it to constants like regularWindow, perfectWindow ect. and if the round timer is below those windows it can be checked for actions and stuff.
