This games wear its inspiration on its sleeves :P. That aside, great gameplay, very satisfying sound effects, core gameplay is pretty much set. I don't know how it can be done but maybe you can use ELO as score instead of chip (which makes more sense for chess).
Also the pastry is a bit hard to see considering they are quite small and hard to see, stuck in a corner as well. Already an amazing game, but a bit more chesslike features would help distinguish itself from the indie behemoth

How does the game fit the theme?
The King plays chess to earn his coin—and indulge in new sweets
What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
I didn’t use any asset packs or third-party resources—everything was made from scratch. I drew inspiration from the design of Balatro and Gambonanza

Great game, you did a fantastic job, this has so much potential
Love this twist on chess puzzles! The animations were crisp, and the music was fun!
Nige game! The only downside is that in low resolution displays like mine, the text is nearly impossible to read.
Absolutely incredible game. Only complaint is that the UI tends to get bunched up very easily, but otherwise, great Balatro-like. It feels like it's stretching the theme by quite an absurd margin but the moment to moment itself is so good I just can't help but keep playing it. Balatro and its consequences on modern human society lmao
Genius concept. If you don't make this into a fully polished steam game, someone else is going to for sure. Balatro and chess are both super popular, this is going to have a lot of fans (including me!)
It's incredible to imagine that only one person worked on this game.
Hello, a really interesting and polished game. I liked how you took the essence of chess and make it faster to play.
The only thing that was a bit irratating is when buying a item you hear the coin sound twice, so I though I bought two items but that was not the case.
For a game made by one person in one week it is really amazing. Wish you the best of luck in publishing it!
Not much of chess person. But found this game more interesting than regular chess, love the presentation!
Interesting and fun combination of chess and Balatro. Very addicting
Amazing that everything was made by scratch, awesome idea + execution. I sometimes struggled to put my piece in the top corners (the indicator would only flash and then disappear), but otherwise this felt completely seamless. Really great work :)
My favorite game so far in the jam. Really cool mechanics and all around fun
Great balatro like
But the learning curve is a bit steep, all of the mechanics introduced at once.
Amazing polish, almost a finished game, cant believe you did it such short time.
Overall very cool.
Hi!
The level of production is amazing for a game jam game. I had a lot of fun. The concept is very entertaining!
As already said, it's a great Balatro like. I had a lot of fun. Amazing Job
made me think of pawnbarian. Had no clue how i died at the end lol.Fun to play even if you know nothing about chess
"Huh, why is Itch putting this game jam game in the featured games queue?" *60 seconds later* "Oh yeah, that makes sense."
If I could rate more than 5 stars on visual and audio, I would. The snappy animations, the woody strike of pieces landing on the board, the flick of cards as they land on the table; all really immersive stuff.
Looking at that team size (1!!!) is also kind of mind-boggling. I leaned heavily on open assets in order to get across the finish line as a solo dev and even then I made it through by just the skin of my teeth. You have a lot of discipline to keep everything in order and get it all delivered starting from scratch.
Echoing a sentiment I've seen elsewhere in the comments, the theme feels like it might be stretching it a bit, but I think that's going to come pretty far down the list of things I take away from this game.
Fantastic work.
