Luc
Comments
Probably my favorite entry out of the entire jam. Most of the comments have already said this, but the GUI is great. Different sections have their own UI, which helps immerse you in each of them. There are a lot of little details put into this. I especially like the loading screens that provide additional lore to the game. The game in general goes through like 10 different genres in just this build, and it works? There's been a lot of romance in this jam, but the relationship between Luc and Darius stands out due to how Darius has PTSD while Luc is willing to help and support him no matter what. Their first date was very charming and cute. They feel like a couple that truly loves each other and has spent years together. On the flip side, the prison segments are appropriately moody and don't pull any punches when it comes to the brutality of war. Darius (and to a lesser extent, Volkov) show the effects war and government corruption can have on a person. The aesthetic is just chef's kiss. I adore it and the visuals. Overall, the writing plays well into the genres of the story. There's a lot of interesting lore going on. The game can be surprisingly funny at times. Like shortly after the sting of one of the most tragic reveals in the game wears off, Volkov gets introduced and calls you the f-slur in his second line. And then you have the option to say that he has a nice ass and it'd be great to hear him scream while he's getting pounded. Like, I'm still thinking about this moment weeks after I read it, it's amazing. There's also the action-flick corny dialogue that somehow fits and doesn't ruin the mood. The only issue with the game I found so far is that the exposition dump near the end almost kills the pacing of the game. But then it quickly picks right back up. I just fuck with this game, and I can't exactly explain why other than snarky tiger veteran husband. I would love it if Darius, Theo, and Volkov manage to cut themselves off from the conspiracy organization and take matters into their own hands. I think it would become literally my favorite gay furry game of all time. But even if that doesn't happen, I'm certainly looking forward to more updates of this game. Absolutely a must-read.
I should probably put spoiler warnings in my reviews,
My goodness this has to be one of my favorite VNs in this jam so far. There is so much quality, from the UI, the writing, and how this feels like an actual game. I love how the dialouge box and other UI elements and theme of the visuals change depending on the setting, whether it was a sort of dream/memory section, or the current time and how it looks like a screen kind of like the ones in the Fallout games. The music was damn amazing. I love how immersed I feel reading this, did I mention how I love the visuals, IT'S AMAZING, AND ALSO THE CHARACTERS, I love Darius' and Luc's dynamic, I love their chemistry and understanding of each other, I love how they also tease each other on things it's so cute. I love how there was a loading section simulating a loading bar in games trying to render assets LIKE URGH IT NAILS THE VIBE SO WELL. And I feel after the jam this will become like a fully fledged game based on the inventory, a sort of map button, navigating the ways around avoiding monsters and ensuring safety away from enemies. I hate to compare but it feels like my VN but cranked up in writing, visuals, audio, and mechanics if I had more time to work on it. Also GET IT TO 100 REVIEWS YALL GIVE THIS MAN A HAPPY ENDING AAAA
And heres some thoughs while reading:
Presentation, amazing
I started the game and then went back to the menu and it changed and intruiged me even more
So much style oozes from this, and the pausing of text me likey
Heck yeah bread test, it's the yeast they could do, I love their chemistry so far wow
WAITTTTT, THE ANCHOR SYMBOL BEING DARIUS, AND THE LIGHTHOUSE BEING LUC
Wow he is one saucy guy
WHATTTT, TONAL SHIFT???
The bg in the section with Luc needing to go due to short staff look like closed eyes, kind of makes me think that Darius is thinking about it in his mind (Later it was in the end so far of the game so maybe not, but I really like the texturing)
GOSH I LOVEEE THEIR DYNAMICCCC
I knew Kinkade was somewhat familiar
I love that newspaper look
THEY'RE SO CUTE
A FLASHLIGHT MECHANIC TOO THAT'S SO FKIN COOLLLL, and a moving meter omg
"I fear what we've become" always spells peak
Noooo "enought"
NOOOOO THAT CLIFFHANGER THAT WAS SO GOOD
A full game that mascarades as a jam entry.^^ Quite the exciting cliffhanger as well. Some answers will have to wait for the full game (most notably for me, when did Darius go on his rampage? It doesn’t really make sense for him to kill high ranking officers then go back to his home like nothing happened, so it must have been AFTER Luc’s death. But then, what did they try to arrest him for? Hmmm…) So yeah, I’m definitely intrigued. The writing and characters are good too. The presentation is quite impeccable. The UI and effects really enhance the experience. The music and sound work well. And the various graphics look good. There’s a hint of gameplay but not enough to really say much for now. Overall, really good start. I’ll wait for the follow-up.^^
So back in 2017, a movie called Atomic Blonde came out, and I remember a bunch of incels getting pissy and calling it "Just a james bond movie with Charlize Theron" like watching Charlize Theron beat the hell out of a bunch of goons set to the greatest hits of the 80s and have sex with a woman who dies one scene later wasn't something I'd want to do. In the same sense, I feel like this is "John Wick but for Gay Furries." Maybe a Liam Neeson film. Y'know, one of those action movies where they have a real actor, someone who can actually display the full range of human emotion beyond "quippy one liner" so they want to give him a tragic backstory to balance and justify all the hyperviolence he wants to commit. I mean come on the only thing Luc is missing, and I fully expect to see it in a full release, is a dead wife in the white sheets scene. We've got a similar set up with the main character, he's an ex navy seal, so there's justification for why he can snap necks or fire every gun known to man or whatever other action hero shenanigans he gets up to, and he's a war criminal so you know that even though he's REALLY COOL war is bad! Once again, I think all of this is hype. It's just what if you made [ALREADY FUN MOVIE NIGHT] have gay furries. Cool. I'm extremely down.
I don't want to honestly dig too deep into the guts of critique here, because it's not really something I want to rate since I know it's going to be more finished, and I'll have more to say then. Great teaser, wish there was more, etc. I love the creativity and how much you've twisted renpy but... I wish there was more accessibility. I would rather just not read the vn than listen to the god awful self voicing, but some of the fonts were a bit hard for me to read, and self voicing can't handle the things on the papers we're given. Is the puppy we're shown at the end supposed to be Theo, then? Admittedly I think you're gonna have to work a little harder to invest me in the cast. Personally I've got a fairly negative view of the military so having Luc and Darius both be like "wow thank you for your service" is like... hrm. Luc nothing but respect for nurses. Darius... I mean you kinda reaped what you sowed man. The names are different but I assume we're in Fake America and our enemy nation is Fake Russia, but Darius' deployment seems to be a mishmash of Iraq and Vietnam. idk if I were him I would not be touting my service if I got a whole town blown up including a kid that kept giving me bread. Despite my enjoyment of the overall... premise? setting? these guys do not thrill me, but I am a burnt out american so it might appeal to people who do not have to sit through countless recruitment attempts from the industrial war machine. Or maybe when we get a bit more time with them they'll offer me more than just "what if the punisher was a buff gay tiger?" It's hard to suspend my disbelief with Fictional Military when it very purposefully resembles Real Military, is what I'm saying, and that distances me from caring about them from an empathetic standpoint. Only a clown would die for his country etc etc. Either way you made me think this much about it, the use of the medium is extremely impressive, I'm always thrilled when people make renpy cry and scream and twist into something other than a visual novel engine. Love the art direction, and i'm looking forward to future updates!
'Geiger' is one half heart-warming romance between a ex-military guy and a male nurse, and one part political action triller the with the likes of 'Mission Impossible' or 'The Bourne Series'. Though this is only the 'Jam Release', so it's acts more as a Chapter 1 or demo/preview of the story that is to come, it takes a lot of time to lay out the exposition not only for the background of the main character, but also the secret organization/military operation that draws inspiration from real life events. The presentation of this visual novel is professional grade, as the two stories have widely opposite art aesthetics, where the romance story is shows through soft innocent colorful hand drawings, while the action thriller story is presented almost in a FPS video game HUD screen and point and click mechanics to explore the environment.
The action story is intriguing and rife with conspiracies of secret organizations acting as puppet masters in the world of politics, and the main character acting as one of those shadows to uncover an international level threat. The romance story is surprisingly grounded in the awkwardness of a first date that grows into a connection made between two guys that find a spark between them. Where the story might get weird for some folks, is how these two separate stories mix together into this visual novel experience. I imagine the contrast is on purpose, but it almost feels 'too contrast-y' if that makes sense. That action story seems to embrace the classic 'dead wife/husband' trope as a defining characteristic and motivation of the main protagonist, and once that fact is revealed, it's unusual to continue the shift into the flashbacks, when the reader is now ready to shift into action movie territory. I don't fault the story for dipping into it (it's a staple of the genre), but trying to combine it with the romance story does mean that one side suffers for the other.
Because this visual novel is also still in the demo/WIP phase, I'm so very eagerly looking forward to the resolution of the story and how the tiger guy copes with the methods that this organization uses. There's some bigger themes brewing in the narrative, but until more of the story is written, I can only speculate if they reach satisfying conclusions. The theme for 'a light in the dark' does present itself in both ways, literally and figuratively, with the boyfriend being a source of positivity for the ex-military guy, and also using the neat flashlight in the dark. Though, just like the plot, I'm curious as to how well this theme holds through the full length of the story. Overall, the amount of polish that is put into this will be apparent to anyone that loads up the game, and it'll be no wonder if this visual novel will end up very high in the rankings this game jam.
Wow. It's just great.
The presentation is amazing, swapping between two solids UI and mixing an illustrated kid's book collage for the romance story in the past with a well thought grey aesthetic from a military fps of the ps3 era for the present day conspiracy plot. And I can feel the love for those games, expressed in the presentation like with the loading screen with lore on the bottom.
Some early exposition and world building in the story are a bit clunky, but is a trade off to have to do that ground work with ticking deadline of a jam, so it was needed to cram them in so be effecient with time and assets, I can only imagine how time consuming has to be to implement and polish the other features in the rest of the game.
Outside of the romantic lead there isn't much time for the rest of the cast, but they slot nicely in espionage\action movie archetypes and play well their part with the few line given to them.
Really looking forward to future updates, I'm really impressed.
This VN really is excellent, ticks all the right boxes. There's an interplay of a hardened military operation and a sweet and witty relationship banter ft. a military DILF. Darius feels like a fully realized person thanks to the ability for us to see both sides of his life, and even to see how he's changed over time. Well, sort of. Truthfully, he's sarcastic on both sides, but that just makes him more likeable. It's really nice to see how Luc and Darius support each other on their worst days. If it was just that, I'd already have this VN as one of my favorites, but then there's a whole new side to it all, and what a side. The presentation is impeccable, evoking a very game-like feel (though I suspect those loading screens are doctored). Everything works together to build up the tension, to ramp up the intrigue of this apparently fantastical military world. Honestly, it's a shame it ended where it did, but there was plenty enough VN for me to enjoy it all. Definitely one of my favorites, could even be the big winner.
Broooo your vn is gorgeous af
The UI and the sprites are peak perfection. I like the art style for the scenes with Luc, being more sketchy, it gives some nostalgia vibes.
You are very creative with your story, it made me even emotional and laugh sometimes. I’m eager to see what’s next! For the “May Wolf”, the wolf interest doesn’t play much role sadly after the middle of the story, but I understand you want to focus more on Darius new mission and all the mystery about the incident, which is interesting as well!
Either way, good job Erebus!
Thank you for your service.
Really what the hell, cuz this presentation is too good man. I love the UI and all extra care to make the entire thing felt consistent and unique. The audio work is amazing and even all the subtle details are covered (like the radiation noise gets more frequent as the scale goes up)(probably getting the best audio direction I’m ngl). Aside from a few problems said by armoredopossum about the Karsk scene at the end, I also wonder whether having the flashlight system (which seemed like the intended way to read that scene) is necessary at all. Cause if anything, the sprite looked more like they are wearing a visor that provides night vision instead of a flashlight, but maybe it’s just me. Another thing is 2 quick menu UIs, which might be overboard (?), but to be fair, its different vibes for different scenes in the story, though there might’ve been some middle ground to be achieved there.
Speaking of different vibes, for the plot, I felt like I was constantly being pushed between genres, which is loosely connected to the plot. The first scene leans too hard into telling, which imo somewhat hurts the impact of the later scenes (especially with the date scene right behind it, might as well show that first before telling that imo). It does provide some background information about the plot though, so there should be some balance between what information be told and what’s better to show instead (this also applies to the one scene where Luc is allegedly ded). Such important plot point and character development just to be mentioned in passing really hurts the story. I’ll just say all them jokes are a coping mechanism to elevate his feelings for Luc somehow (but if not then MC got over it too fast). The whole story reads like action with romance attached on to it rather than a clever mix of both (it does look like you want to lean more into action than romance but with the word count and all the romance has to appear more to provide backstory).
For the theme, it’s Luc, it could also be the bomb, it could also be that flashlight and the radiation. The darkness lies in the circumstances, which was made abundantly clear (multiple times) in the first scene. I love this idea cause it’s very unique, and can’t wait for the full release.
P.S is that doggo Theo cuz it’s giving Theo. Also we need 100 ratings NOW.
Rating: 4355
Edit: Rebalancing of rating to 4455
The author has submitted some fantastic stuff for prior game jams, and this one is no exception. I would be willing to call the gorgeous UI one of the best I've seen in any furry visual novel, and the different styles add a lot to the storytelling. The sprites are equally good – though it is sort of unfortunate that we spend comparatively more time watching the stylized monocolor art in the jam version, since it is very pretty but just not as quite as visually interesting. I think the only actual criticism I have is that flashlight effect affecting the entire screen, non-diegetic elements included, maybe doesn't feel quite right; having to use it to read the narration made for a fascinating, unique experience, but the spacebar-hostility was a little annoying, and I have mixed feelings about whether making the counters less visible worked or not.
I would call the story enjoyably, deliciously cheesy and confident in its genre; you get the essential themes and beats of military sci-fi, and it's just all so moody, especially when complemented by the atmosphere of the visuals. The character voices are good, too. Though I yet again find myself unable to make definite statements on unfinished work, I will say this: I'm not sure how well the bifurcated structure pays off on the whole. It feels like many scenes end in a way that fails to keep the narrative momentum going; for example, I think the first bit in the facility could afford to incorporate a stronger plot hook. That being said, the material itself is written well enough that Geiger remains a thrilling read throughout, and it is of course possible that the true purpose of the structure awaits in the upcoming parts.
All in all, excellent work, with a couple of question marks that I'll wait until the full release to make up my mind about.
Hoo boy. This just happened to be the first one in my queue and this set the bar awfully high.
I'm a bit new to reviewing in the game jam format so I'm just gonna throw out some quick (good lord, I have a problem) feedback and then move onto some other general comments. Some spoilers ahead for those that have not finished the build.
Implementation of Theme:
Well, I think this is pretty open/shut. The lighthouse synecdoche is a clever way of handling the "light in the dark" theme and I like the little lighthouse and anchor symbols on the flashback UI to reinforce this point. It's cute. Also, I'm not sure this was intended or not, but besides the figurative light in the dark with Luc there's also a literal light in the dark once Darius starts navigating through Karsk. If intended, great. If not, I'm giving you full credit anyway.
Story:
Right, so, overall I think there's a good setup here. While I have some gripes here and there with the narrative, I'm legitimately interested in seeing where this story is going and it did pull a couple maneuvers that left me pleasantly surprised, which is not always easy to do.
Biggest issue for me here, and this really flows to most of my other issues with the story, is that the "My Wolf" component (i.e., Luc) seems like more of a garnish to the story you actually want to tell, which is the sci-fi/horror/black ops tale. For the purposes of the jam itself, I think this is fine. It seems to me like there's a lot of leeway for where you can go with the "My Wolf" premise so I don't think that's a big deal.
However, it felt to me like there was a marked difference in flow between the action and romance scenes. Like, even just from the typos I found - it seemed like you were much more excited to write the action plot and were kind of struggling to find the words for the romance. There were definitely a few points where Darius' and Luc's chemistry didn't feel quite there and more like they were together because the script said so. I think you still conveyed what you needed to, and I was absolutely bummed when Luc's reveal was revealed, but there are points when that connection could feel stronger, especially in the first date and bedroom scenes. Bus stop was better though.
I absolutely commend you for taking on serious themes like PTSD and transitioning from military to civilian life - those are hard to do well and I can tell you really put in the effort to make them work. As a suggestion for the intro though, focus a little more on "show don't tell". It's basic and probably obnoxious to hear, but especially in the very first scene, it feels like we're kind of going around in circles saying the same thing without really getting anywhere. Instead of having Darius talk about how much his scar sucks, just show an interaction with him on the bus or something. Someone looks at him, grimaces, looks away, and he hides his face. Something like that. We get all the info on Darius' military history during the first date anyway so you can keep it simple.
I'd try to keep this principle in mind in the dialogue as well - especially during the first date scene the dialogue slipped into cliches a few times ("lots of guys never came back... and those that did didn't come back whole"; "he spent so long saving other people, he never thought about saving himself"). Something like "My dad served in X" -> "Oh... oh, shit... is... I mean, is he, y'know, alright?" conveys "X was a bad place where bad things happened" while feeling a bit more like a natural conversation and less like a war movie.
Otherwise, my other comment on the story would be that there's still a bit of a missing piece for me on how and why Darius' little war crime was made public when it was? Hopefully that's something that gets revealed later. Kinda wonder if Dustborne had anything to do with that...?
Presentation:
Outstanding. The multiple different UIs, the letters and newspaper articles, the different art styles between the flashbacks and current sprites like Volkov, sound effects... Really, really impressive that you managed to put this together for a game jam.
Creativity:
I mean, look, you took a prompt for a furry romance story and turned it into a survival horror shooter. I'm not going to sit here and pretend I don't love it.
An additional gripe that I could have put in "Story" but I guess can go here is that I was a little disappointed when "Totally Not America sabotaged a nuclear reactor and blew up a town in Totally Not Russia" was immediately revealed to be "Totally Not Russia false flag operation" since the former sounds more interesting and the latter sounds a bit more... COD MW2? Kinda hoping there are more twists and turns to be revealed there.
Other:
Volkov: 1) helped me get over the sting of Luc very quickly for some reason; 2) has a name that is maybe a bit too on the nose? I mean, it's a wolf jam, I'll allow it I guess; and 3) I'm not sure if you're going for Russian authenticity or not since he's from Totally Not Russia after all but FYI Russian names don't have "middle names", they use a patronymic. So like, he wouldn't be "Dmitri Roman Volkov", he'd be "Dmitri Romanovich Volkov" if his dad was named Roman. If that's not what you're going for, feel free to disregard.
Random Karsk Stuff: not sure if you're aware, but pressing "H" to hide dialogue also hides the entire overlay in the Karsk facility. Radiation readings, darkness, flashlight, all of it. Doing that, I also noticed that Volkov's suit doesn't cover his tail? Is that intentional? Kinda feel like you'd need that covered too. Dialogue in this scene felt a bit too casual, more like a Marvel movie than a grounded take like the tone seemed to be suggesting up to that point. Could have used less dick-based commentary while exploring the facility.
Anyway, really, really enjoyed this and looking forward to seeing what you come out with post-jam. Thank you for your service.
