Description
This is Lawn Chairs and Lucid Dreams, a soundtrack to a wistful indie platformer about discovering lost memories, being tiny and the imagination brought out by just baaaarely being asleep
We used a combination of Ableton and Reason because we can't agree on a DAW to both learn. It works for us!
We've tried to carry the same ideas and feelings throughout the soundtrack, using a lot of relative keys and leitmotifs.
We find ourselves drifting off after a nice late meal in the garden. Suspended for a moment in that space between waking and dreaming, we let the shadows creep over us as day turns to dusk.
Before we know it - we're standing amidst forest of enormous grass stems. Clovers are towering over our head, and in the distance we spy a familiar, broken toy.
Hypnagogia
The peace of lazing in the garden on a warm summer night, and drifting off accidentally.
Off for Adventure
The dream begins, we're tiny now and exploring our world from a whole new perspective.
The Checkered Plains
It's our classic level music. We're full of platforming beans and ready to conquer this picnic blanket.
Forest of Clovers
Wow. Look at all those grass.
A Rusty Old Friend
We discover a discarded friend in the forest. Someone from our childhood who has been out here a long, long time.
The Stars Seem Further Away
A moment of peace, almost waking back up, staring up at the stars. We decide it might be time to wake up.
I Ate too much Weedkiller
We're hungry, and our robot friend suggests a healthy snack. It's... not great.
In the Weeds
We regain our senses enough to realise we're in trouble.
A Rusted Out Friendship
Not maintaining a friendship can have dire consequences. A boss fight ensues.
(Don't) Put Down Childish Things
We could've done better for them.
Make a Bargain out of a Molehill
We meet a friendly mole shopkeeper selling chilhood memories, they'll help us finish our journey.
Something Underground
With renewed purpose, we set out to become embiggened again.
Wakey Wakey, Sleepy Head
Returning to the real world, we contemplate our journey. We feel things. We hope you do too.

Message from the artist
We really hope you enjoy, we've had a blast working together on this soundtrack, and we didn't realise how easy it was to feel things for a fictional robot you created seven days ago.

Theme
How does it fit the theme?
This tells the tale of drifting off asleep in the garden as the sun sets and it becomes night, and how one night can change your perspective.

Cool OST overall! I feel like some of the synths are a little harsh at some points, and a few of the tracks maybe go on for a bit too long - the vocals in "a rusty old friend" are fun, but the song just seems empty after they are over. I'm going to try and find a way to use "make a bargain out of a molehill" in my every day rhetoric. It probably won't make sense, but if I'm being honest, I was only vaguely coherent to begin with lmao
Regardless, loving the quirky retro vibe going on here as a whole, nice work!
A quirky soundtrack for a quirky game. Really digging the retro vibes. Awesome job!
Whoa there's some crazy variety in here!
Love the breadth of emotions you were able to represent. Big fan of the use of TTS!
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS. This was so creative and was such a treat! hypangogia was a good start, a rusty old friend made me smile, and the stars seem further away got me in the feels. Great soundtrack and submission! :)
Thank you so much for listening! And for the kind words.
You've pointed out some tracks both of us were individually more responsible for writing so, we're feeling very happy at that recognition. :D
There was a lot of variety in the OST which is good since you had so many tracks.
I think sometimes a few of the tracks themselves had room to grow however. They started and ended without changing much which caused them to begin feeling a bit repetitive. Rusted Out Friendship for example hardly changes from what I could hear causing it to feel like it lasted too long.
Those opening synths were beautiful !km Kind of brassy and soft... It perfectly set the mood for drifting off ! Great opening :)
This was my favorite especially for that !
Thanks very much for saying so! Really appreciate the listen.
Was really impressed your entry so, feels good to read. :D
That was a wild ride from start to finish! You managed to connect so many different ideas into one narrative it's honestly a little mind-blowing, fantastic work 💛
(OKAY editing because I listened to the whole thing again and, while this whole album is amazing, 'something underground' and 'wakey wakey, sleepyhead' are my favorite vibes-wise k bye :))
Wow what a journey. There is a ton of different artifacts and interesting points throughout the songs. I think a rusty friend and a rusted out friendship are so amazing not because they are individually super crazy, but they are such notable detours in the grander narrative.
I had a ton of fun reaching internally throughout the set and really trying to feel whats going on. Your descriptions being short and to the point leave a ton of room for open imagination and I really appreciated the thought behind it.
Great entries!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm really glad that the more vague and open descriptions for each song were appreciated. We definitely wanted to leave a lot to the listener so that the focus was the overall journey and the music that gets you there.
I think we falter some in the second half as I wish we'd had time for one more happy, bouncy platforming tune to balance out the feel, but we're still real proud of what we managed to get done.
Im really glad! This is good music that deserved to be made and I think your execution was wonderful for the time given.
Great job again and congratulations on completing such good art!
This is a massive journey that encompasses all sorts of emotions and with every song it felt like discovering a new side of someone you know. Every single song on this album is oozing with charm and personality, so many fun and catchy melodies, so many different emotions, all incredibly cohesive and well produced. At no point did any of the different genres feel jarring, tracks like In the Weeds and A Rusted Out Friendship were set up really nicely earlier in the album and still feel familiar from the more calm and ambient songs. The idea of using relative keys for the lucid dream is also really cool, it's like jumping back and forth between dreams and reality and that kind of conscious music theory decision is an instant massive up in my books :D
VERY impressive submission!!! Easily one of the most emotionally narrative albums I've heard so far.
Considering how positively I felt about your entry it's wild and wonderful to come back and read your lovely comments about ours!
Thank you so much! I had many of the same feelings about yours, especially on how cohesive it felt.
Really appreciate the listen and the comments.
13 tracks ? That's absolutly incredible. Maybe a little too much variety, sometimes felt a little lost in the plot. Still amazing !
really impressive to put this much work together over the course of this jam. touches on a bunch of different vibes and feelings; sometimes wistful, sometimes abstract, sometimes hopeful, but always playful and fun. thanks for sharing :)
A lot of fun and different ideas running around here! I really appreciate the wide approach you both brought to this project. That being said, there is a certain lack of cohesion and I do also feel like a lot of the songs start to end before they really get to where they need to be. Lots of good ideas that I could definitely see being expanded upon outside of the jam. Regardless, the lovely soundscapes speak for themselves and they show a tremendous potential, fantastic work!
Thanks very much for the comments!
I definitely agree somewhat that we somewhat went for an overall quantity and story and maybe sacrificed some individual song quality, at least in terms of each piece not having much evolution in the musical ideas before they end.
We were trying to go for some fairly simple loops that could play in the background of some platformy levels, but I think next time we'll try to maybe do fewer tracks, but add a bit more musical complexity and evolution to each one.
Your narcose miasma gently cascades upon me, and I embrace the prismatic void.
… and then I and up and dancing to robot beats and catchy melody lines. Your sound world is a superb match to the theme of your game. Thank you for the entertaining adventure.
This reaction rules, thank you so much for listening!
(Also, Narcose Miasma feels like a great title.)
The ambience in some of these are incredible! The soundtrack in general feels very cohesive and is overall very fun to listen to, there's a lot of different textures with some leitmotifs connecting everything together! Also great sound design throught!
"hypangogia" was my favorite, it really capture that lazing about feeling on a summer day!
"the stars seem further away" and "forest of clovers" were also two that stuck out to me, they brought out the beauty of exploring the garden!
Great job to you both!
Thank you so much for listening!
this is it. i live for these kind of melodies. the percs, the diff types of instrumentations, the counterparts. i wish to play this irl
I'd love to hear these played, I'm really glad you liked it!
BRO A rusty old friend is soo cool ahahaha
The whole submission sounds great, there's some I like more based on personal taste, "The Stars seem further away" and "hypnagogia" hit hard, but the rest is great too!
The theme you were going for is perfectly embodied, it really sounds like lucid dreaming or being very very high (not that I would know, but still felt it xD).
Lovely work by the team!
We're so glad that came across :) The wavey hazy vibe and the genuine strangeness that came come with dreams was something we tried hard to hold central.
Thanks so much for listening!
it worked wonders!
Pretty comfy and chill ost, I like how atmospheric a lot of the stuff here is, fits what it's trying to go for, I will say tho that some of the tracks get repetitive easily due to not building upon rhythms and chords to develop them, which in a hypothetical game like this might admittedly not matter, but as a standalone ost it is a pretty noticeable problem. However, I am very impressed with the held consistency across these 13 tracks, nothing stuck out like a sore foot and the quality was a linear line, it had a clear style to it and you guys stuck with it, nice job :>
Thanks for listening! Consistency was something we tried hard to stick to, since we were collaborating long distance most of the time.
We definitely agree with the repetitive nature of some of them - most of these are envisioned as loops for gameplay purposes, but if we were to expand them out we'd definitely want to develop some of the lines more for sure.
A rusty old friend and a rusted out friendship 🗣️🗣️🗣️my faaavs
I also enjoy (don't) put down childish things ✨
Thank you for listening!
First time busting out the ol' speak and spell samples. They were a weirdly last minute addition - I tried to do a robot voice myself in an earlier one <<;
