Description
« One summer night, you and your friends decide to tell each other some ghost stories around a campfire in the mountains wilderness. Select carefully your tales to scare everyone and be the most frightening of the night ! »
For this OST Composing Jam, I decided to do a bunch of littles tracks for a « party-game » concept. At their turn, a player choose a horror story from a randomized collection. Each one leads to a mini-game where the players are trapped and must survive in a limited time. Were they to be harmed, their ‘fear’ score would increase (if fast enough, it’s possible to lower your score). At the end of some custom number of turns, the least frightened player wins.
I was inspired to go 8-bit style by horror-themed games like castlevania, organ trail or world of horror. It was really fun to experiment with the sounds of the magical8bit plugin. All the tracks are made to be short and loopable, hence the sudden cut at the end. Doesn't seam to work that well in soundcloud though...
The graphics of this game would also be retro-ish, but I didn’t have any idea for the project photo so here’s a bad photomontage of the moon (personnal photo) on top of a campfire (free image from vecteesy).
Description of the soundstrack
Game menu theme – Tales of the campfire
Customise the party settings and you’re ready to go. What a horrible night to have some fun.
Story selection theme – Cracklings’ echoes
This theme would play between mini-games, when a player is selecting the next story. I really love the silences there.
Story theme – Chased by a beast
The player selecting this story fearfully transforms into a monstruous rotted wolf-horse thing chasing the other players. Truly a wild card to play.
Story theme – Last chance ritual
All players must perform the ritual to banish evil. Any wrong step raise their own fear in panick. If the ritual fails, god knows what might joins them…
Story theme – Phantom phone call
Each player must decipher the dead’s warning obtained from beyond to avoid the catastrophe before it’s too late.
Story theme – Shadows of the foggy forest
All the players get lost in a maze-like forest covered in a strange moving mist blocking your view. Be careful, some paths only lead to fearful encounters…
Story theme – Twisted hide and seek
The player selecting this story plays as a serial killer hunting down the others players and avoiding their desperate traps in an abandoned mansion.
Story theme – Woman in the midnight mirror
All the players must repare their broken mirror to free the lonely ghostly figure trapped there. Don’t worry, if you’re not swift enough, you will rejoin her.
Victory theme – One summer all nighter
This theme would play on a player’s victory. Nightmares or not, such night is doomed sleepless.

Great chiptune submission! I really liked the harmony and how dynamic you made all of the sounds! It didn't feel like there were any notes that were misplaced or placed without intention. Very well done!
Thank you very much ! I like hearing and composing with mysterious and dissonant harmonics but I’m always worried about crossing the line between dissonance and nonsensical noise, so I'm glad you felt it wasn't the case here !
Wow, these were really cool!! I think you did a great job with your chord progressions and harmonies; these songs really feel like they were fully in sync with each other. I loved it!
Thank you very much !
the chord progressions are SO GOODDDD i also just love how each track represents the title SO well. in my opinion your ost def hit it out of the park in terms of storytelling via the tracks alone!! just an incredible job all around 👏👏👏
I’m following you on youtube since before your first participation in this ost jam serie, and I love your music, so it’s quite touching to have such a positive feedback from you. Thank you for all !
Loved the chord changes throughout this submission, you definitely nailed an “eerie but energetic vibe” that would be great for your party game idea. You did great with the 8-bit limitations you set. Nice work!
Thank you very much ! I wanted all of the story themes to be very different, but linked by a common element, and this chord progression came to mind. Glad you didn’t find it boring ! I struggled to find a track order that didn’t feel too repetitive.
Fun submission and soundtrack, I love the style you went with!
Thank you !
Love this concept :)
Diving into the idea of doing music for a party style game is super creative. I really enjoyed the use of the 8 bit style, and your composition lends very well to the nostalgic sound. My biggest critique would be on the mixing of the tracks as a whole. Retro/8 bit sounds tend to be incredibly noisy and harsh, and at times particular sounds are a bit overwhelming in the mix - drowning out other important elements.
My favourites of the bunch are 'Cracklings' echoes' and 'Twisted Hide and seek'.
Awesome submission, keep it up!
Thank you for the feedback ! Usually I concentrate my efforts on one music, so it was quite a challenge to do the exact opposite and be more productive with simples musical ideas.
I totally agree with you, in my music it can be hard to hear what the instruments play separately. I should probably learn some things about mixing, and to be honest I don’t really know how my DAW works ^^’
That is totally ok! Take your time, and continue to have fun! That is the best way to improve :)
This definitely fits right in the pocket of an 8-bit/GB/NES game. Good job.
thanks !
Seamless loops don't really work on soundcloud since the player still likes to cut off a bit from the start of audio, or at least used to before 😁
Really solid stuff, vibe is great and can hear it fitting what you described well.
Good job!
Oh that's why. Thank you very much !
The chiptune is very well done and sound professional!
I also love the gameplay and storytelling ideas! It feels like a real OST which I love to see!
I think Phantom Phone Call was probably my favorite
Thank you very much ! I wonder if you caught the message this phantom was trying to tell...
probably not lol my brain turns off a little bit when rating a lot.
Loved the compositions themselves but not a huge fan of 8 bit
I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to my submission even though you don't like the music genre. Thank you !
"Last Chance Ritual", "Shadows Of The Foggy Forest" and "Woman In The Midnight Mirror" are definitely my favorites in this one, the sounds chosen there play really nicely with the 8-bit theme.
"Last chance ritual" and "Shadows of the foggy forest" were kind of experimental, so I'm glad you like them ! thank you !
WOW. i love how nostalgic the sounds were sounding. phantom phone call is so jumpy i love it
Thank you !
