Description
'Remnants of a World Prior.' is a stealth based, Horror/Puzzle game.

Your objective, is to make your way through an overturned city - crawling with the undead. At the other end of your journey is a radio tower. You must reach it to find out if there are still other humans out there, or if you are the only one that remains.

Throughout your adventure, you come across many reminders of your past life - a life before the outbreak. A life as a kid in the midst of summer.

The genres of the soundtrack range from ambient to electronic. We used Ableton and FL Studio to create these tracks.

1. Remnants of a World Prior.

This track introduces the world. It starts with a motif that is heavily used throughout the entire project, which represents the 'present time'. As the track progresses, you are introduced to another motif which you will hear again in later tracks, that feels more "dreamy". This motif represents the 'remembered time'.

This piece is meant to show the player the broken state that the world of the game is in, but also provide a sense of hope and meaning - something to strive for.

2. Solemn St.

This track represents the broken city. It shows the loneliness of the world the player inhabits, and the lack of comfort around every corner. It shows that if you are quiet, the world remains neutral.

3. Unfazed.

This track was made to accompany puzzles and obstacles throughout the game. As the player progresses throughout the worn down, and broken city - they must remain unfazed despite the abundance of threats that surround them.

This piece was the original source of the primary motif used throughout the soundtrack.

4. The Decayed.

This track is an aggressive representation of the players failure to remain unseen. They must now escape the onslaught of the undead as they run through the dark and narrow city streets while continuing to progress towards the end.

5. Radio Tower.

This track signifies the end of the journey. The player has reached the radio tower needed to call out for other human life. The sun is rising, and the world is calm. For a brief moment, the player can look forward with hope and simplicity - just as they have looked back their entire playthrough on one summer night.

Theme

One Summer Night

How does it fit the theme?
Our interpretation of the theme 'One Summer Night' is youthful simplicity. Summer is much more important and emphasized when you are young. Originally we wanted to write the soundtrack in a more happy and easygoing tonality. However, we compared the summer nights we have now as adults to the ones we had as children and realized that with loss of innocence - comes loss of importance. We wanted to write a story that shows the realization that your childhood is done, and as an adult you can't stop moving forward. In the game, we imagined a character that has to endure and conquer a world that is overrun and no longer familiar. Through his journey, he completes puzzles that reveal small remnants of a world prior. These reminders bring him back to a fond memory of one summer night. As he makes his way through the city, he acquires more hope and confidence through the remnants of humanity that he finds. All of this represents his want for human connection - just so he can know he isn't the only one still left.

I love the atmosphere in this one! Very good use of synths to convey the state of the game world.

Wow! Love a good horror submission, and this was no exception! I especially liked The Decayed, spectacular mixing work on that one! Very well done!

I like the ambiance, vibe, nasty bassline

My favorite are Remnants Of A World Prior, The Decayed, Radio Tower.

Really great ambiance pieces!!! They almost made me think of Night in the Woods, interestingly enough. I think you got the eerie sound down really well, but I think I would have liked to get a little more creepiness. Either way, great job and I think this could easily fit into a real game

Nice ambiance, really cool ! If I had a little, minimal complain, it would be that the dreamy, reverby sound design make the world sounds more empty than crawling with undeads IMO ? Most of the soundtrack felt more like an empty, dead world, such as in dark souls or hollow knight. But I'm almost ashamed to be this nitpicky, everything is 5 stars for me !

Appreciate you taking the time to listen and share your thoughts! Thank you!

Thought put into when and where to use motifs? Check. Clean mixing with instrumentation that puts you in a space? Check. An interesting story progression conveyed through the tracks? Check. It's all consistently high quality and the progression throughout the album is awesome, I especially love the bass work on The Decayed, that goes stupid. The only critique I have is that the more ambient stuff sounded a bit like it was repeating itself without much being added or taken away. That could totally just be a me thing though, fantastic submission all around!

This is the best comment I have received on anything I have made, EVER.

The fact that you noticed all the effort we put into everything makes me so happy, and I really appreciate this comment. 'The Decayed.' was a track that I took the lead on - and it is super different from the stuff I usually make, so I am stoked to see how much people have been enjoying it.

Massive thank you for this comment. You made my day when I first seen this comment :)

First off, that album cover is dope; love the dystopic but weirdly nostalgic feeling it communicates, that's great graphic design! And the OST that accompanies it is tight as hell, too; I fw that very specific blend of dark ambience and layered, lush electronica you've got goin on here. Genuinely difficult to pick between Solemn St. and Unfazed as my favorite tracks. Great work!

Really glad you enjoyed the project!

Big shoutout to my good friend and collaborator on this submission - fearoffever. He is the one that came up with the idea for the cover and put it together. He also did majority of the work on the two tracks you noted as your favourites!

Thank you for listening :)

Your tracks reminded me a lot of VannaDeltaFox tracks. He wasn't able to participate in this jam but the energy from your tracks has a similar vibe. Specifically The Decayed was a lot like their tracks.

The rest of the OST had some pretty great sound design too.

Absolutely great quality on all of these tracks, love the theme you went with too. It's familiar but also stands out as a post-apocalyptic story that you wouldn't imagine at first. Good job man!

Thanks dude! Appreciate you taking the time to listen and let us know what you think about it!

One of the most unique takes on "One Summer Night" I've seen so far. Beautiful job!

That means a TON to us! Nailing the theme was something I struggled with a bit in the last OST Comp Jam, so I really wanted to make sure that this time we had a super compeling idea that we could attach a lot of varying music styles to.

I am absolutely stoked with what we came up with, and even happier that folks like you have taken notice and are enjoying it :) Thanks for listening!

Fascinating soundtrack. I enjoyed how you used various wavering synths to create a hollow and mysterious atmosphere, perfectly capturing the world which the game is set in. Good work!

Thanks a ton! Happy to hear you enjoyed it!

Your choice of sounds is very successful across the whole project. There's a stark yet warm feeling you create that really fits with the game idea you described. Great unique take on the theme!

Appreciate the love dude, thank you!

Really enjoyed the sound design in "The Decayed". I enjoyed how the tracks gradually grow more populated the deeper you go. Connecting how different summer feels when we're adults and translating that into an unfamiliar world is a great interpretation. The first track reminds me a lot of Dorian Concept, which is cool. My only critique is that "Solemn St." felt like it could use a bit more variation and movement. Maybe even as simple as dropping the melody and leaving in drone/ambient.

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed it! We had a ton of fun making it :)

I had never heard of Dorian Concept until you commented this, and I have now been listening to them for the last couple days - and I am really liking their work! Fantastic recommendation, thanks for sharing them with me.

Appreciate you taking the time to tell us what you think!

This was amazing! I enjoyed each track and had a lot of fun listening to them! I really like the story you came up with for this game, it resonates deeply with me, and each song closely follows it, great job on the storytelling! I thought the aggressive synths in "The Decayed" were really nice, and a great contrast to the other tracks. I also really enjoyed the final track, it's a great switchup from the one before it and it's filled with hope. Thanks for sharing this, keep on making good music!

Yo I really loved y'alls approach to this soundtrack! Reminds me of Silent Hill OST at times and overall is an OST I wouldn't expect given the themes so this definitely left an impression. Favorite one is Solemn St. Great work guys.
