HEY! I got to play this on Saturday but with the kids with me I didn't get a chance to rate the game but here's the link to the gameplay https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2565381393?t=02h10m28s with my daughter. Now that the dust of all the streaming has settled, here's my feedback.

Gameplay:

  • Such a simple concept with a lot of possibilities! I loved how there was no real one way to approach this game, especially as I watched my daughter explore some critical thinking. I felt like there aren't enough games the really challenge the kids anymore, especially on mobile games where the games seem to be insulting our intelligence more than anything.
  • I only got to play up to stage 5 but the progression was fantastic, allowing room for players to first learn the game, to exploring the game, then adding a bit more challenge! Didn't even really need a tutorial, it was nicely intuitive.

Audio:

  • Moooo, Sfx were great for what it is, thinking the portal and hitting the hay could have better effects but for an indie title that isn't much of a priority.
  • I'd love to hear some ear candy level of of music that would further match the cuteness of the game, especially something attractive for kids, the current percussive track does add a bit of that puzzling feeling though so something that includes this feel. I actually wouldn't mind throwing together another kid track. I made a upbeat version of Row Row Row Your Boat/My Bonnie for another kids game. https://glimmusic.com/services.html Click the Kids Upbeat Dance Track. If this is something you'd like, let me know.

Visuals:

  • All the assets were simple and easy to identify as objectives! Only thing i'd probably like to request is a way for the dashed lines to pop a bit more as I felt that my daughter was not entirely aware of it as much.

Overall I'd love to see more of this game especially as a mobile app since I've noticed that kids lean toward that more than pc's now. Hope you continue to develop the game!

Thank you for your time and for creating such a wonderful thought provoking game

Regards,
- Glim

Thank you for the feedback, it was a joy to see you and your daughter play the game. It reminded me of the joy my little cousin has when he tests my various games. Never fails to put a smile on my face :))
I hadn't considered a mobile port though I see the potential. I'll have to think it over as it's a skillset I don't yet have but have considered learning.
Regardless thanks for playing and sharing your experience, this made my day <3

Here is my gameplay video if needed:

It's actually fun as you progress in the game. There were no tutorials while I was playing, so it took me a pretty long time to understand how the game works. The UI is... Okay, but more polish would be helpful. Perhaps if you hover over the feature, such as adding more cow, or a confirmation pop-up would be good, as it takes time to purchase/upgrade items. But again, overall, conceptually, this is pretty good and fun already. Nice casual game to play in a short time :D

I played this game on stream: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2565553540?t=01h09m42s

Overall, I liked the puzzles. It took me a while to realize the I could buy back the fences and move them somewhere else and not lose any money doing so. That being said, there were a few choices that were irreversible: buying upgrades, and buying tiles. Upgrades being irreversible made sense, but I was surprised that the tiles were also irreversible. I'd tried to buy a tile (without realizing I could) by accident and couldn't undo it. Maybe if it's not fully reversible like the fences, consider having an undo option, so I can undo the last 5 actions or something.

  • Youtube Timestamped Link
  • Graphics : Fine
  • Music / Sfx :
    • Music : Meh , the one song that's there is ok but it's very low  compared to SFX and more variety would be nice.
    • SFX : Generally alright, I do find it greatly amusing when the sound speeds up and overlaps, albeit this is likely unintentional.
  • GUI : Fine
  • Gameplay :
    • Honestly better than I thought and it's deceptively difficult.
    • There's no hints or tutorial as far as I can tell, some pointers as to what might be what or how a cow (or it's milk production) might affect income would be nice.  ((Also the Up and Down arrows seem to do...nothing?))
  • Notes :
    • Better than expected
    • I honestly avoided this as I thought this would be a kiddie game, it's instead feeling like a good old flash game from Kongregate where it'd have some truly infuriating achievements (Like beating level 11!)

Surprisingly had more fun with this than I expected, although I did technically only play two levels (3 if you count me skipping to level 11). Aside from maybe some more levels (which you seem to be doing anyway) and some minor touch-ups here or there or slight confusion on whether m/s upgrades or a cow would be better, there isn't much more I think you could do to improve this.

I didn't get it at first but when it clicked what I was supposed to be doing I was thrown WAY back to those old school flash games I played in the mid 2000's, especially those Cartoon Network games like that Clone-A-Doodle-Doo game with Dexter and Candy Machine Deluxe with the Ed boys, got me feeling like Anton Ego when he ate the ratatouille haha. Would love if there was just a bit more explanation, but still awesome work!

This was great! I really had fun with this one and played it all the way through.

I really liked having 'time spent in the level' as a metric, this was an interesting and unique spin on the tower defence idea. I remember playing very early Warcraft 3 maps where part of the tower defence was to build a maze from your towers to increase the exposure they had to the creeps. Is this perhaps where your idea comes from?

Player onboarding might be something to look at here - it is always a challenge but is usually worthwhile. I got the idea pretty plainly, but I know that someone without the context of old school TDs or gaming in general might struggle linking the concepts together.

Controls where good, UI was good, and the sound design was fine. I would have liked access to more data during the run, even if this was an optional pull out tab or something. I often wondered how much milk I made in the previous run, to try to work out how much more I needed to get from the next one.

Thanks for some good bovine fun!

Thanks mate!

I agree that more metrics would be helpful granted they don't overwhelm the player, and the game definitely needs more work with its onboarding. Good points there.
Also you hit the nail on the head, I grew up playing Warcraft 3 TDs so that and some of the Starcraft custom map TDs definitely inspired the design. Glad that someone picked up on it xD
Thanks for playing and your feedback!

This was cute and lovely!  I really enjoyed the sound design and tinkering with my solutions to get utterly absurd paths and results.  Each time I sent the cows out, it was a treat to watch them go.

A few critiques:

  1. The portal colors can be very similar for certain people.  I recommend giving them different shapes (inner or otherwise) to help people with vision disabilities differentiate between them.
  2. The lack of a tutorial might be fine,  but I think one with the basic concepts would go a long way in terms of building player faith in the system early on.
  3. Tooltips (doesn't have to necessarily be next to the mouse) would be very helpful in explaining the various land types, or buttons.
  4. The game speed resets between levels.  It would be nice if it remembered my previous selection.
  5.  A breakdown for the star breakpoint values would be nice.
  6. There was a small hitch when the milk full animation played for the first time.
  7. A previous round breakdown (milk and income) would be nice
  8. Sometimes the result of a placement didn't have the expected result I had in my head.  This is largely not really an issue due to the visible path, but it did give me a little pause and wonder about it a few times.

You've brought up a number of small points that are great feedback and easy enough to fix. Also the live feedback is always immensively helpful to really get into the mind of a player so I appreciate that you gave the game a really solid go <3

Jam Host

Hello! Welcome to Feedback Quest 8! My name's Hythrain, a co-host and one of the streamers for this event! This feedback is being written live as I stream your game! If you're interested in seeing my live reaction, let me know and I can send you a link to the VOD once it's posted to YouTube!

So my normal approach for any game in these events is simple: I get the game, make sure it's not a virus, then play it with as little information on how to play as possible. This way, I can judge how intuitively someone can figure out the game. Only if it's obvious that I need to read more will I do so. I note this so you can get a sense where some of these feedback comes from. In addition, I want to note that feedback and rating are different; don't use this feedback to gauge what I'll rate, nor should you view my rating as entirely indicative of my feedback.

Who would've thought a game about cow herding would be more fun than cow tipping?! Trying to figure out how to solve each stage was a lot of fun. Given the game's design, I have to imagine there must be multiple solutions per puzzle.

One thing I wish was present was the ability to know what each tile did. While some were easy to figure out at a glance (such as the money tiles and the walls), some were less so obvious.

I also wish that cows wouldn't change their behaviour when placing fences down when said fence doesn't affect their old behaviour. I had this happen on the last stage I played, where placing a fence two spots right to where the cows would go caused the path to shift one tile to the right. It was a change that made no sense.

Lastly, it'd be nice to know the pathing the cows will take if they go through a portal. That way, even the portal pathing can be more properly planned ahead from the start.

That all said, I had a lot of fun! :D

Developer

I see your points about teaching the various tiles more clearly and better portal pathing indicators. Thanks for the feedback :))

I found the game very entertaining! I jumped in without reading the page description, so it took me a little while to understand that the goal was to make the path longer instead of shorter.

I played through all the levels, but I’ll be honest — there were still some things I didn’t quite understand. I think it would help a lot if hovering over elements gave a short description of what they do. For example, the up and down arrows aren’t obvious at first, and the portals took me a while to figure out. Even after finishing the levels, I wasn’t sure what was better to upgrade — the cows or the milk production.

It’s also a bit tricky to tell which path is longer. Maybe adding a tile count or estimate would make it clearer. A “Start” button on the UI would also be nice, so the game could be fully playable with just the mouse. And a “Reset” button would be great too, so players could easily restart if they had a rough beginning.

Overall, I really enjoyed it! A few small improvements to clarity and usability could make it even more fun.

I agree that it could be made more new-player-friendly. Thanks for the clear feedback <3

Cute idea and funny theme. It took me a bit, however, to understand the whole thing, and I still don't get how the warps work and what to do in the higher levels. – Just let them run around for ages to get enough milk? I'm a bit clueless there...
A bit of text in the game would help a lot.

I think that could become a really entertaining little game.
