I was laughing out loud at the music in the title screen. I just sat there waiting for the whole thing to loop, and it was amazing. It also just generally set the scene for how playful the game was.

In terms if gameplay, I felt as if I was primarily chasing the powerups in the hopes of finding something that would heal me, or for more damage per tentacle, or more range. I think next to those the other powerups I seemed to get didn't feel very meaningful.

I think that the popup for what happened might be good to show above where the gift gets opened (since it's easy to miss the text in the side of the screen when there's action going on). I was also hoping for more ways to use skill to survive. I felt that my move speed was slow enough that dodging cannons didn't seem viable, and I couldn't seem to hit the cannons back at ships (which would have been quite spectacular).

I didn't get past 16 ships, but I had a good time, and I laughed more than I did in any other game I played.

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed my idols worthy voice!

Knocking back cannonballs is a very cool idea, and would definitely be fun!

I think if I were to make a real game out of it balance would be a big thing to focus on. All the upgrades are actually quite handy, but, need to be gotten at the right time to be useful.

If you got the scale damage and size upgrade many times, you basically become invincible.

OMG your sea shanty was amazing! (Spotify drop when??? XD). The controls felt great and I really liked using my mouse wheel to switch between tentacles. Seeing you post updates of your game on Discord was super and it's really cool to see how technically impressive the kraken is!

Developer

Thanks!

Thank you for complimenting my kraken (that felt dirty to type...)

Cool idea. Plays a bit janky on my computer, as all Unity games do (if they aren't already actively trying to overheat my computer and blow it up), so I couldn't get a very good score. I have to be that guy and say that the sound of (musical) whistling really irritates me so be aware that it's something some people would prefer to be able to switch off. I also realised the scroll wheel was selecting things that weren't there, and then I got a fifth tentacle in one game but it sill didn't help (how many can you get?) and most of the time nothing was selected, so I switched to the right click in the game after that. It still felt a bit cumbersome though but I was able to play a bit better.

The water effect is really great.

Question, though: you might be the beast but are you the monster? If some aggressive whistling boats came into my sea house I'd also slap 'em.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, it is a bit janky, I've since changed some code to make it only index limbs that are actually enabled which helps alot. Personally right clicking on limbs is much easier for me. Interesting about the performance, I didn't think the game would require much horsepower but maybe I was wrong.

I definitely hated the whistling...imagine hearing that every time you playtest! Which is why I added the option to mute it in the pause menu, you probably just missed that :)

Thanks for playing!

Ha ha! Yeah, ok, I missed that.

I have an old computer, which is the main problem, but Unity in general is just awful (besides all the spyware and analytics, plus how it leaves junk files all over a player's computer) because it ramps up the GPU on even the most innocuous stuff and that's been a problem since before my computer became "old".

I'll check the game out again once you publish the next update!

I enjoyed playing the game. The controls were tricky at first, but once I got used to them, it became easy to play. The art style was simple but engaging. I did notice some lag in the controls now and then. The game was challenging, but it felt like there wasn’t much of a reward to keep me going. Also, it would have been fun if there was feedback when the Kraken’s life goes down.

Developer

Yeah, the controls are a bit tricky.

The game already had a ton of feedback so I didn't want to overwhelm the player with too much screen shake and such.

Technically, when the player takes damage, the screen does darken for a moment, the screen shakes, there's audio and the UI shakes so there's actually a ton of feedback, I just didn't want to overwhelm the player, so I toned it down.

Nice Kraken sim. So cool that you did the bg music yourself, it was very calming and necessary in all the chaos that ensued under my tentacles as a Kraken. Great job (but I don’t think I make a very good Kraken)

Developer

I think the game might be a bit too hard haha, but thats ok, its not easy being a monster.

I tried just making a fun loop.

If I had your storytelling ability I would be unstoppable!

Looked really cool, and was fun to play, well done!

Developer

Kind words!

Quite a fun little kraken game. I found changing tentacles with the mouse wheel a little cumbersome, I feel like a keyboard hot key to swap them would be nicer. otherwise great job!

Developer

Yeah the scrolling could use some work for sure but remember you could also right click on them to select them, which is much easier!

Thanks for playing!

This was fun and entertaining at the same time. Good work with the art and voice acting.

Nice whistling skills. PS: programming needs some work.... hehehe, just kidding.

Submitted(+1)

I love this game! It can be very addictive. Love your voice and whistling (as background music for gameplay, it worked very well).

Submitted(+1)

Really impressed you got this all done by yourself. Especially when you must've practiced for a year to sing that well. Loved your game last year and i love it again. Great job

Developer

Thank you! I tried to keep my scope realistic this time...and somewhat succeeded.
Next year will be even smaller XD

Thanks!

Mah'man. The kraken-slapping was addictive enough, but your ballads of the sea were the real treasure. Somehow your voice soothed me through the perils of crunching and submitting my own - as if Poseidon himself crooned “it’ll be okay, child.”

Ek wou die skip klap maar hy wou nienaber kom nie.

Developer

If there was a prize for top comment you would get it!

Dankie!

This was ridiculously fun and chaotic, loved it!

Developer

Thanks Kraken friend!

Hey, nicely done! Loved the OST at the beginning and during the game...I see this is a game of the future, so welcome in the past I suppose? (See the year you specified on your game page ;)

Developer

OOPS
I always think its 2026!?

As soon as I launched the game I was presented with hilarious OST, which out of all the Kraken games (which seems to be a recurring theme this jam :D), immediately got me interested.

Surprising amount of depth to the mechanic, the controls wrecked my brain at first but you definitely get a hang of it after a while and its pretty fun after that!

Developer(+1)

How far did you get? I think my best was 108 or so.

Thanks for playing!

Whistling was a 10/10 OST. Cool stuff man!

Developer

*Whistles in thanks

Submitted(+1)

Wooow,  Its so fun to play.  As you get the power ups you can feel the power increase.  Though I did find myself struggling to change tentacles (scrolling would deselect all tentacles sometimes, as if it was indexing a tentacle I didn't have yet. )  but that's probably just a skill issue lol.  Also love the sea shanty

Developer

Yeah, that's exactly what was happening, when I added the ability to get new tentacles I didn't have time to go back and make sure it only finds active ones, good catch! (Are you secretly a game dev?)
Thanks for playing!

Not game dev but normal dev lol.

I think I understand what it must have been like when Star Craft came out; angry cause I'm bad at games and stinky because I've been doing nothing but playing Star Craft Whackin-Kraken. Getting better at swapping/aiming tentacles quickly to keep up with the endless waves of ships and upgrades feels really rewarding, although it takes a bit of getting used to. I did find myself wishing I could queue multiple tentacles to attack (maybe you can and I'm just slow at clicking), but I the gameplay loop is super satisfying!

Also VO career whenđź‘€ I need more sea-shanties yesterday!

Developer(+1)

Thats super kind, thank you! Looking forward to giving your game a try!
