just played the game again so i could complete it and no more crashes!! tho i think a sticking point for me is how i'd rather just avoid the birds instead of taking them down. this is partly because on keyboard moving from spacebar to J doesn't feel very smooth and i'm more inclined to keep moving instead of lifting my hand from the jump key unless necessary for progression. but also they're pretty easy to avoid, you can just run past or over them, even the red ones just jump over you lol, if they knock out one of my monkeys i can get them back easy. so maybe a banana reward (since they are supposedly stealing the bananas) from taking them down, or other incentive would be good there.

Because of the limited time, the game design and ludic parts of the game were compromised, these are known issues and I want to fix this with my team when I make this a full game! Thank you for reporting!

Still managed to rate before the deadline <3 only got to comment now- sadly no stream/vod.. ( why was rating so short, + no weekends...) & if you still want a live react you can always hop by & ask :D

This game was incredibly well built & polished! Easily a top 5 contender imo.

Besides a few details in the initial UI controls I don't have many improvement points to talk about.

Really well done!

& If I can ask- how long have you and your team been doing gamedev & gamejams?

Developer

Thank you!

Teper (The artist) and I have been working together since 2021, we used to start a new project every two weeks and never finish any of them :V, it was crazy! I got a job in a games publisher/developer in 2023 and I've been working there ever since. Me Teper and some work colleagues launched our first 'solo' project earlier this year (which is Bananitro, one of the prize winners from last year's Monkey Jam!).

This year's team we got Manodeix and KlebO, they're from Brazil's GameMaker community, they've been making games since 2022 (i think).

Crazy polish and fantastic movement! Love the bird mechanic. If I need to give some criticism, I would make the areas more recognizable by not using all the dif blocks, but just 2 per area. I felt lost and didnt fully feel progress because everything looked the same.

Developer

i tried to make then diferent based on the layout, you will never see an layout similar with each other, but i understand what you sayng! thanks :)

Satisfying animations, the polish on this is unreal!

Even the level design felt smooth (which is very hard to do in a jam format), not easy but not mind blendingly hard either. The jump height was properly adjusted as well. A bit too strict but it was fun finding the correct paths. This is a VERY solid entry!

The end scene was funny, nice touch!

As for providing feedback, other than the softlock bug, I felt like the player movement was a bit weird, specifically when you jump and keep your momentum, and try to make another jump, it doesn't let you, which makes the pacing awkward as the level is built in such a way which repeats the same places and once you memorize the layout, you'd want to speed run :P

Oh and also, on my PC I was hit with this issue, but was able to play the game after. Just nitpicking so you know the compatibility issues. This is a banger game, I'd love to play more levels!

Thank you for testing our game!

Teper, our artist, also did all of the level design, and even WE were impressed by his work! All compliments on level design go to him!

The game lacks two very important features for platformers: The Jump Buffer which helps the player jump after landing while keeping the momentum, and a Coyote Timer, which lets the player be able to jump a few frames after falling from a platform. The lack of these features contribute to the "weirdness" you feel with the player movement! We knew we needed to do this but we ran out of time...

The thing is, you wouldn't have to encounter situations where you felt weird about the controls if the level design had so many parts where it requires precision platforming! The level design was good but it needed to let the player run around through 100% of it, I'd say it's currently like, 80%...

The error that showed on your last screenshot might have happened because of outdated video drivers! It's not a common GameMaker crash, it's a graphics API error!

I'm glad you enjoyed the game! And i appreciate the feedback! <3

having a unique loading circle is really awesome. i was kinda confused at first trying to click the volume stuff and it jumping me right into the game. feels odd to have mouse register on a keyboard or controller only input. sound effects were fun! reminded me of yoshi's island. collecting bananas especially felt satisfying, made me want to collect every single one. music was also fun, different tracks felt distinct the way different tracks in mario kart might, but it kinda sounded like i was on a nintendo playlist than an ost for the specific environment, even if it was fitting the vibe. but they were fun and kept the game not sounding too repetitive which i imagine was the aim. i wasn't prepared to have my other hand on the keyboard for J so that was a bit awkward. i like that things feel fast and snappy once you're moving. feel like the birds could look more evil? idk i thought they could be friendly at first.  i can lightly hear them which is cute, but i kinda feel like the moncrew pals could be a bit more audible so you really get to hear that you've got a whole crew behind you. maybe you guys tried that and it sounded really annoying but it kinda felt toooo quiet when visually it looked like it shouldn't. also feel like killing bird button could've just also been spacebar? unless there's a reason which i'll discover later but—at this time after trying to jump on a bird and rescue one of my monkeys the game crashed here.

i had to get task manager to shoot it out back that's how hard it crashed.... tried to play it again and got softlocked here.

so i think that's enough macacrew for today.... i did kind of feel like what was the point of taking down the birds, like i wasn't sure if there was a particular benefit to killing them over just avoiding them besides the satisfaction of it, and i was hoping to get far enough to get a sense for more of the progression but i am a bit impatient and want to give other games a try too.

Wow this was a very in depth analysis! Thank you for playing the game!

The mouse being registered as a confirm button for the UI is a bug! Not ony that, but not being able to call the pause menu while in game is also a bug!

We wanted to make a more ludic way of showing the story to the player, but unfortunately we only had time to put it on the game's page But basically the birds were stealing all of the bananas, you were right about making them more evil :V

Thank you for the feedback on the music!!! Me and KlebO worked around the clock to make the soundtrack!

We kinda messed up the controls... Using 'J' to attack is way more confortable when using 'WASD' which we never mentioned in-game.

You have probably found an infinite loop at the end, not a crash, which caused the game window to be frozen, i am EXTREMELY sorry, we never found this during testing...

I still hope you enjoyed the game even while encountering these issues...

Damn, this game is impressive, its extremely polished for such a short time also  +1 extra point because our games are like cousins (because of the monkey trail :P)

Developer

Yooo, thank you so much!! I'll try your game!

I can easily see this being one of the best games of this jam. There is so much to respect about it.

Great visuals, audio, the core game mechanic was fun, and its all at an extremely low 8MB. Amazing job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! GameMaker does miracles with filesize!

Submitted(+1)

Holy shit! What a juicy experience! Awesome work! I don't understand why I was killing the birds tho. I rad ones just wanted to get out of the way XD

Developer

They're Polly Roger's goons! They stole all of the bananas from Potasia Island! Thank you for playing!

I think this might be top game for me! It's certainly up there. The frenetic movement and camera, the bopping track, the lush pixel graphics. Wow!

I would love to make a game that feels like this, all the secret sauce like, flashes, particles, sfx are so good. Do you have a checklist of that kind of juice that you go through? Do you teach or have a YT where I can learn this skill? I would love any tips!

Developer(+1)

Learning game development is mostly practice and references! After making some games and trying what works and what doesn't it kind of becomes part of your intuition! It's also good to try to replicate stuff you see in other games too! It's a fun technical exercise and you get to see what works!

I'm happy you enjoyed the game!

This pixel art is my favorite of the jam. The physics of the platforming felt incredibly good. Great job everyone!

Great art and music! Loved hearing the occasional "banana?" in the background 😂

Great game all around. Pixel art is clean and the animation adds a lot of life to it, movement feels snappy and satisfying, and the sound design is top-notch alongside the banger music. Nothing feels out of place, it all combines together really well. Loved how hectic it was when you had all the monkeys following you!

Developer

Glad to see you enjoy our work! Thank you!
