Once I figured out the special "mechanic", it was smoothing sailing. Managed to get all but 3 of the normal and 3 of the secret items... no clue where they are lol.
I hope that means you discovered the captains secret mixtape hidden in the boombox... I did the music for the game and that was by far my favorite moment. I haven't seen anyone mention discovering it yet hahaha
