What a crazy idea and fun game! Loved the atmosphere that was created by the limited vision, although it made it incredibly challenging to avoid the zombies at high speed. Despite that though, I was laughing at the premise!

Developer

Glad to hear that! :> I borrowed the idea from state of decay 1, I realized that if I illuminated everything then it looks kinda predictive, as in there is no need for headlights at all. Thanks for playing!

Haha this idea is so satisfying that I also made a game with the goal of running over zombies. Somehow my car flipped over in one drive and there is no way to respawn it, so I was forced to stop playing. Also it's really dark and I would like to be able to see a little bit more of the road. Now that I have spent 3-4 weeks on a car game as well, I appreciate how well your car controls.

Developer

Yes indeed! Its inspired from state of decay game, and my apologies for the flip I knew that might happen but I didnt fix it, because for some reason the car automatically reflipped when I was testing it, because I was using the wheel colliders with a lot of motor force.  I purposely want the player to not see the zombies so when you slam into them you might get scared? or so I thought XD, I wont lie but I did use chatgpt for the programming help and I truly think wheel colliders do take time to understand and same for the car physics, If you noticed thier is no drifting in my car which I did want to add as well. Thanks for playing!

Indeed, car physics is a lot harder than you might expect. I tried using wheel colliders at first, but eventually decided to not use the built-in physics engine to apply forces. The wheels use physics materials, though, which are helpful. It's a lot easier to control that way, but then it introduces other issues like collider clipping that you have to account for.

Developer

if you want to use wheel colliders then you have to be very exact with the setup you are using in unity. And tbh wheel collider is like all in one thing, suspension, tire grip, moving the car stopping the car etc. If you want kinda like a smoother and relatively realistic driving experience you should try using wheel colliders. Alsooo the wheel colliders actually don't need physic materials. Everything is kinda self contained. I never had collider clipping issues with physic materials but I never explored them as much so am not sure too.

Very spooky atmosphere, I agree with Mr Scrumbo, a scoring system would be pretty nice! Killing zombies was also a lot of fun with the lil blood animation, which made me feel a bit sad that I was supposed to avoid them haha

Developer

You are right it does let down the experience when you have to avoid them, but I didnt want to add scoring system in it since I wanted to make it awake the fear from survival, but I do think for this shorter version scoring system migth make more sense. Thank you for playing!

I smashed so many zombies. Its one of the most fun parts of the game. I wanted some kind of score multiplier for hitting them at increasing speeds. Further powering up my demon car with all the blood it consumes from the zombies.

I assumed, after they destroyed me, that I should avoid those big big zombies that do not splat when you hit them.

Developer

Thank youu! and good to hear that. Thats a very nice concept but I wanted to do that with fear so like you have to change cars if you car is almost about to explode(initial idea). Yes those fat zombies were supposed to be like invincible ones, but then I realized its a drag to drive your car around them so I just made them dissappear after being hit once.

At first I thought that hitting the zombies would give me points, so I had to restart the game when I realized I was losing health. Perhaps a simple instruction page could help.

I enjoyed the low vision car game tho! I felt like it was very spooky and a good horror theme. I think the game play could be more developed given more time to show how long you survive etc. But it was a fun-

Developer

You are right I also thought about that, but I wanted to make it kind of a miserable game where you really dont have any hope of surviving since there will always be more zombies etc. which is also the reason the road generates endlessly and the closer you get the more road you have to drive on, and if I allowed the car to just slam into zombies without any damage then it wont be as satisfying if you play for longer time with fear factor, this is if I incorporated my whole idea with survival mechanics which I didnt, so its my fault XD
 Thanks for playing!

It took me a bit to figure out the controls, I'm not sure I like up and down being forward and reverse.  I play games mainly on consoles so am more used to arrows being for steering and then A and B being gas and brakes.  Kind of strange only using one hand to play.  But the driving is really smooth.  I'd prefer HUD however instead of the green bar over the car, the green kind of ruins the visuals, whereas as a HUD could be designed with dark colors to fit the theme.

Developer

I tried making the controls similar to the usual car driving/racing games, So like WASD or arrow keys for driving and SPACE for braking and mouse for panning around, Ah I see I dont have any experience with consoles xD but I will do my research and see how differently they are handled, You are saying the correct thing about the UI I also felt same, but I kept it that way because I was initially planning to have multiple vehicles which get destroyed visually. Thanks a lot for suggestions and playing! :>

Very satisfying sound effects. The controllers were a bit hard for me. Would have done well with some UI (how many zombies killed etc)

Developer

Thanks a lot! I used the free sounds from freesound, pixabay etc. Yes you are correct I also felt the controller should have been a bit more responsive atleast the turning, It was actually hard for me to decide wether I allow the people to see the UI for like how many zombies they killed etc or like the score of how far they have traveled, but then I realized that UI would clutter the screen. I just wanted the game to feel kinda helpless since its a zombie apocalypse and there is no end (so that is scary? I dunno but I tried XD) thanks again for the feedback!

This could be a really fun rage game, where you try to see how far you can get without totaling your sick ride. Wish there were some sort of way to tell how far you've traveled or some sort of score or something, but as it stands this is a real neat project!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! I didnt mean to make it a rage game though XD, I did think about adding the ai for zombies in some sense so they actually seek you and kill you, and also stuff like you have to survive somehow by collecting supplies in houses in first person, then going back to your car, and also shift cars if they are actually about to blast, I wanted to show more of a burning effect on car before it gets destroyed, so you would have to jump out of car in first person mode and find new car, but I couldnt find any good damagable low poly car. And that would have gone out of the scope of the game jam then, atleast am slower to make all that, and too much thinking. Nice pfp of jack frost you got there.
