Description
I took inspiration from Hollow Knight for the concept and orchestration of my tracks. Both tracks have sections that would be looped until certain points- Undersea Exploration would be an area that once you explore more, you unlock more to the song, and Venture Forth would be a scripted dialogue sequence into a boss fight of some sort. Undersea Exploration uses synths and voice, while Venture Forth was written for orchestra (violin, trumpet, flute, snare drum, etc.). I used BandLab and Musescore to write Undersea Exploration and only Musescore for Venture Forth.

Theme

Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
In the picture theme, my eye was immediately caught by the water, and I went with that for the theme of both of my tracks. Undersea Exploration is a self explanatory title; it would be an underwater level for a game. Venture Forth takes a different approach, the opening is very sweet and modulates to the minor, more sinister key, where it gains a more pirate-y feel.

I love the vocals in Undersea Exploration, but the last part of Venture Forth is really good too- nice work!

Great work, loved the vocals in there.

This feels quite different to other entries I've heard Ness which I'm rly happy about. The chord shift and vocals in undersea exploration really sent me, did not expect that movement it felt great to hear. The second piece was cool it sounded almost like an airship theme to me - which makes sense given the pirate vibe. I think though the two pieces don't necessarily seem to me like they fit together as a whole though. But it was still a great experience listening to each piece which felt unique!

Also I forgot to ask, did you record the vocals live?

Yes I did! I got help from one of my friends for the higher voice part, but otherwise that's my singing. Thanks for your feedback :)

I liked how uncertain Undersea exploration sounded. The rising notes every measure ending on a note that sounded just slightly off like the ocean was distorting the noise.

Of the two tracks, "Undersea Exploration" is my favorite. It really leans into what it means to portray.

The overall mix needs some work to balance out the low end and high end. The OST accomplishes what it set out to do.

Venture Forth goes SO hard, really great work!

All the textures here are, and I mean this in every sense of the word, epic. The underwater-sounding sounds like that bass and drums mixed with the airy flute and vocals in Undersea Exploration are just so heavenly. Some of the elements in the mix feel a bit overpowering, like the low filtered saw wave(?) taking up a lot of space in the mix so some levelling could help there, but all the ideas in the track are incredibly solid and paint a great picture.

I think my thoughts are mostly the same for Venture Forth, though the mix sounds a lot more balanced here. The composition is really great, it feels huge and emotionally resonating with incredibly catchy melodic lines. Personally I think some more automation on volumes to help each section swell into each other could push that incredibly driving composition even further, but that doesn't take away at all from what's here. Really cool submission! Great work :)

Thanks so much for the feedback! Mixing is definitely a skill I'm still working on when using a DAW, so I'll take these suggestions and see if I can still improve it :)
