I'm stuck in the first room. I killed all the pizza guys, but I can't interact with the girl or get out the door. (Pressed E and Space.)

Please send me something on my discord, this has never happened before. (I didn't see anybody else having this problem)

Would you be kind enough to send a message to (redacted)? Also, the exe file might just work since it may be a browser problem.

Played again and this time it worked. Maybe Julia had a really tight hitbox or something or I did not get close enough to the exact spot.

I liked the opening, plot, and self made art. Some quick suggestions:

  • Add a button to skip the opening in case someone is replaying.
  • Like others, I also had trouble with room 2. Felt like there were too many bullets to avoid and no place to dodge them.
  • Add additional move keys along with the arrows (WASD and alt arrows). I find it makes games easier to play and more accessible with these options. I use GDevelop myself, so thought I'd share my general condensed set-up for move events. (This is technically a platformer, but not hard to swap for top-down.)

Developer(+1)

oh yeah i know how to add WASD controls. I just totally forgot, haha. Thanks anyway for playing the game :))

Submitted

That's fine. I just add those automatically because 1, left handed users, and 2, I've found that switching between controls saves me from messing up my hands from using one too much.

Developer(+1)

Did that fix the issue?

Submitted

i also had this issue but it then worked somehow after like 2 resets

Developer

that's super weird but i have no idea how to fix that. probably a browser bug. installing the exe should fix it pretty easily, but it's good that you were able to play the game at least.

Submitted

i didnt get past lv 2 after that tho, no idea how anyone can

Developer

Yeah it's difficult but not impossible, trust me. The trick is to get behind them since they only shoot in one direction. I made the game hard on purpose, but perhaps I've made it too hard? Lol

Simple but stylish. A wonderful project with great potential! The best part of this project is the atmosphere. Need more time to work with the controls, but it's still very nice! I want to see your next projects!

I can see that the game has a lot of potential. I really liked the introduction and the small backstory it has. However, I’m curious to understand more deeply how everything fits into the theme in a coherent way, because I feel like I missed some details, or at least not enough to make the theme stand out more strongly.

The visuals are simple, effective, cute, and very beautiful. I really liked the art direction; it gave me a sense of nostalgia for some reason. However, one thing I noticed is that the text box stands out a lot compared to the other elements in the game, which gives it excessive visibility, overshadowing the other elements in the scenes. I think this happens for two main reasons:

01. It seems like the text box is completely black, or at least on my monitor it appeared that way. Pure black or pure white colors tend to be quite harsh on the eyes when used in large areas. Ideally, it would be better to add some hue to the black to blend it with another color, keeping it dark but not pure black. Personally, I really like to pull black towards a blue or purple to create a sense of mystery, but this depends on the taste and intention of the creator.

02. I noticed that, out of all the elements in the game, the text box is the only one with borders. This makes it draw more attention than it should, because if it were softened like the other elements, without the border to highlight it from the other objects, it would blend in more visually with the rest of the environment.

The sound effects are effective and fit well with the overall atmosphere you’ve decided to create. It really feels tense, and it’s tough to get through all the challenges haha. I believe the player’s collision mask is too large, which made even the smallest hit fatal, as the large collision area combined with the relatively low movement speed of the character created a difficult experience.

With these adjustments, it’s almost certain the game will feel much more polished and accessible. Even if you don’t plan to continue with this project, I hope these tips will be helpful for your future games. I wish you success as a developer and good luck in the jam!

Hi, artist for this game here! This is my first game jam so I was taking no criticism as a compliment but wow. I got an actual compliment on the art. So, thanks. Also, very helpful feedback. I am going to be genuinely surprised if you don't win the comment contest.

Major props for making all your own assets. Simple gameplay, seems relatively bug-free. Nothing majorly bad to say but also nothing extraordinary as a game, which I understand is a lot to ask for in a 96 hour jam.

Nice game, all-in-all!

Developer

Hi! I was the artist for this game, and I'd like to clarify that I didn't make the background for the rooms. I guess the programmer found it on a website or something, but I don't know where.  The rest of the art was made by me or him as far as I'm aware, though. (Also, this is my first game jam so i don't really know how this stuff works.)

Lil rough on the edges, but def charming!

Needs polishing, like hints to press "e" when nearing the buildings and, if not full controls menu, at least several keys for attack/move. (Cuz, for example. on my keyboard I can't attack, if I simultaneously press â†‘ and â†’ due to keyboard rollover)

Really challenging but also really fun! I struggled but it was satisfying when I finished the last room. The atmosphere and is also very nice. Overall good game :D

Idk how anyone got past room 2 lol. I felt so sluggish compared to the AI and their bullets. My huge hurtbox didn't help. Would've loved to dive a bit deeper but I could not survive for the life of me.

Developer

yeah i totally get the bullet guys are hard lol. the idea is to get behind them, since they only shoot in one direction

The pizza men will come after YOU! Enjoyed playing this, would have been better with normal WASD controls tho. The fourth house is kind of hard bcs you can be killed with only one bullet. A health bar would be great

Overall, this is a solid jam entry, especially considering the limited time to create it. The audio, particularly the sound effects, could use a bit more polish (especially for dialogue text, which makes it stand out in an odd way).

For controls, adding WASD support would make movement much smoother and more intuitive, while using E for interacting. Right now, the difficulty feels quite high: You die very quickly, which can get frustrating before you’ve had much chance to know what to do, but it is manageable and this is the main thing!

I wasn’t completely sure how the Uninvited Guests theme ties in here, so a clearer connection or explanation would really help. That said, the Halloween atmosphere definitely comes through, and the overall idea has potential!

Developer(+1)

the theme ties in as in Jacob came into the city uninvited, but i guess that's kind of loose lol, thank you!

Firstly, and I mean it in a good sense- this feels like you ate too much pizza and played silent hill :)

The gameplay is janky, but hell! I had fun! I finished all the rooms, and the final encounter. I liked that when you got defeated, you just needed to repeat the room you were in.

I liked how the game was funny, and weirdly dark at the same time.

The presentation could be better, and you could go harder on the theme (it wasn't really clear for me who is supposed to be the guest until I read the game page).

Over all- fun game with hella original atmosphere!

Developer

yeah, and the janky part is completely my fault tbf. at least it's not BUGGY, though! it held itself well, even if it felt like it was stuck together with 1970s tape. thank you :)
