How does your game fit the theme?
As far as guests go, the monsters in this game seem pretty uninvited to me. (What kind of guest forcefully breaks down your door??)

Have you joined a game jam before?

Yes

Roughly how much time did you spend developing? (in hours)
About 2.5 hours each day.

Anything else you'd like to share about your game or development process?
NOTE THAT THE FRIDGE AND CABINET ARE NOT WORKING IN THIS VERSION OF THE GAME, BUT ARE NOT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE IT (they are just hiding spots). This will be fixed as soon as the jam rating period is over.

Best played with volume and in fullscreen!

Fridge and closet are broken and i think there are too few hiding spots after room 91. Cool idea and very good for scratch!

The atmosphere of this game is eerily creepy — which is great, because it perfectly fits the Halloween vibe and the “uninvited guest” theme! I really appreciate attention to detail in games, and this one got me right from the start. You could’ve just had the player begin standing up and exploring the area, but starting off lying down and having to get up makes you feel subtly more vulnerable. It’s also a great and natural way to teach the player how to enter and exit hiding spots.

The deliberately slow movement works well to create tension, but in this final version it ends up making the game quite hard — especially since, as you mentioned, some hiding spots aren’t working. Of course, I understand that time is short and those kinds of issues can happen in a jam. It would be nice if there were some way for the player to move a little faster, even if only for a few seconds. I don’t think you’d even need an extra running animation — just slightly increasing the movement and sprite speed would probably be enough.

It’s really interesting to see the natural sense of progression, since we have to explore certain areas before unlocking others. But in exploration games where there’s always an enemy lurking around, it can be helpful to give the player a bit more guidance on where to go next if they take too long to find their objective — just to avoid frustration or feeling stuck.

I’d say this game has a lot of potential — it’s clear that you put a lot of care into it, especially in such a short time. The backstory also seems really intriguing, even if we don’t get too many details along the way.

At first, the controls felt a bit strange to me, but over time I got used to them, so I wouldn’t call that a negative. It was really fun exploring the rooms, and I’d love to know what happens at the end! If you could give me a hint about the second and last digit, I’d be happy to give it another try.

Congratulations on the game, and best of luck in the jam!

Just as the other comments have pointed out, the fridge doesn't work. I pretty much mashed the keyboard and it seems to stop upon pressing any key, but it just plays the error sound and doesn't trigger. The pages and the files are a nice touch which makes me believe there is a good lore behind everything but it's a bummer you can't advance in the game. Otherwise, controls are nice. The carpet footsteps are a nice beat tho XD!

Hey, thanks for playing! I put it in the additional details, but the fridge isn't required to advance. It's an optional hiding spot. I appreciate your feedback :)

Oh, alright. I might give it another go then...

The atmosphere here is actually pretty well-done. It balances the funny part and the "horror" part pretty well. I did not appreciate the way the jumpscared flickered between black and white so quickly though, lol. I also noticed there is a very good amount of content for such a short amount of time. I thought the art was pretty simplistic, which actually fits pretty well with what the game is trying to achieve. The sounds effects are... inconsistent? But they're still pretty well-chosen. Too bad the fridge and cabinet don't work, i was really annoyed when i couldnt open the door and just had to die lol. Maybe a couple more hiding spots scattered would be good for the game? Haha.

But overall, it's a pretty nice game.

Great job. Keep it up.

The art style is great, although it might not all match perfectly, but it’s just so cute and funny that it doesn’t even matter. The contrast between the cute art and the eerie atmosphere actually works in the game’s favor. I actually laughed as soon as I started walking. The animation of the character’s movement and overall vibe are just delightful. That said, the walking speed feels a bit too slow, which makes the pacing drag at times... Combined with some empty hallways and sparse details, those moments can start to feel a little dull. Still, there are a few fun interactions scattered around that help break things up, so the slower pace doesn’t completely ruin the flow. A slight boost to movement speed or a bit more environmental variety could easily fix that. As already mentioned by others: Some things did not quite work... but hey, considering the given time this is just a minor. I really like how you implemented the monster! Overall, it’s a charming and funny little entry that fits both the Halloween spirit and the Uninvited Guest theme nicely. A bit more polish and detail, and it could become a very good game.

I appreciate the review! I'll make sure to get those issues you and other players mentioned fixed as soon as I'm able to update the file. Thanks for the detailed feedback and I hope you enjoyed playing :D

It has promise but I noticed some objects not working like the refrigerator as you said.
The biggest thing I would fix is making the controls more explicit and known to the player
(I even sat the title screen for awhile not knowing what to do before I tried hitting space).

When I died twice because I couldn't hide in the fridge or the cabinet I had to stop playing then.
With these problems fixed the game would be enjoyable.

Kudos for the atmosphere. Hanging around a creepy apartment complex really gives off some Silent Hill vibes!

The atmosphere, and the sound design were the strongest part of the game- it was creepy all the way. The gameplay- also solid. I would prefer if there was always SOME way to escape the monster (if you enter a room without hiding spots- that's it!).

The graphics were... uneven. I liked the title screen, and the grainy filter, but the character art could be better.

One last thing- I didn't finish the game, even though I tried three times. I can't find the first two digits. I'd appreciate some hints- I'm curious how it ends :)

Hey, kkcn, I appreciate the review and for your comments! Some of the hiding spots unfortunately didn't work  in the last version I uploaded, which definitely makes the game harder - but it's not impossible! For the first digit of the code, you need to go into the room with the TV and prompt the "no power" dialogue. Then, go back into the room with the radio and the monsters will have destroyed it. You can then use the batteries from the broken radio to power the TV. As for the second digit, I just assumed that it would be easy to guess it with the other 3, since there's only 9 possibilities - hope this helps!!

I thought the goofy main character was funny and a nice contrast with the horror.

I could not finish the game but I think thats a skill issue from me :)) liked the gameplay  and the art. Well done!

I rlly impressed by art and audio design! And I'm waiting to try one more time after the jam is over with the new fridge and cabinet!

Developer

I appreciate you willing to give it another try! So sorry that these features of the game aren't working in the file, I know if must be frusturating.

I rly love art-style!
But cant finish game, u reeeealy need more hiding spots T_T

Was fun until I realized it may have not been fully fleshed out. I got into the fridge room, pressed enough buttons to start the mini game and when I stopped the arrow in the green space it still resulted in failure. The mini game also didn't start without me pressing a few number keys on my keyboard. Was excited to see where this would go but unfortunately my progress was halted.

Developer

Sorry you experienced issues. If you are interested in giving  the game another try, do know that the fridge is NOT required to advance, it's just a hiding spot. Thanks for playing and leaving a review!

This is really neat!  I love the monster sequence!

I really liked the gameplay of this one with discovering the environment and finding clues (like for the lock). The art style combined with the sounds created a good atmosphere! I didn't make it, sadly, because I couldn't really figure out how to not get caught by the monster? Nice job overall!
