Game Description
URANIUM x PIT is a physics-based chain-reaction roguelike where you fire neutrons into an unstable nuclear core and try to survive the inevitable disaster.

How does your game tie into the theme?
Fission reactors work based on a form of induced radioctive decay!

thank you!!

I'm a sucker for these types of games lol

Good job!

Developer

really appreciate it :D

The theme is really well executed, it’s really fun, and I really like the sound effects!

Developer

thank you so much!

I decided level 101 and a VERY laggy game was time to end the run haha. Nice game!
Developer

thank you!

this is such a unique idea i love it... you might want to consider rebalancing it a bit though because i kept getting cooling rate upgrades on my first run and then there was zero risk of failure and the entire screen was filled with neutrons ajkhsdhjkds

great idea tho and very creative! props :3

Developer(+1)

yeah absolutely, will be thinking about the scaling and balance more in the future. thank you for the feedback!

This was great! First playthrough I went really cautious but it got out of control at level 15. Next one I focused only on cooling and think I discovered cold fusion along the way and got to play another version of the game where the audio glitches out and I level up literally every second, which felt pretty rad.

Developer

thank you for trying it out :D

Very fun and very winnable! I think if there was an instability chance to each uranium thing that pushed even worse heat, there might have made more of a challenge, but it feels good to win.

Developer

thank you for playing!

Very fun game, great job! the pick-three roguelite format works well with the early game you've designed that's clearly focused around risk and reward. Some additional design work, such as ensuring the player can't just take it slow and riskless, or that heart can't be 0, would really elevate it, but this is a jam and what you've done for the jam is excellent and impressive.

Had a blast and made it to level 150ish, went infinite!

Developer

thank you so much! and yeah very valid feedback, I will definitely consider this

Very fun and cool. But i broke the game with combo spawn ball with zero heat and decrease heat after ball disappeared. Well done, awesome!

Developer

thank you for playing! yeah i plan to rescale some stuff :D

I've never seen this concept for a video game before, this is really cool! I thought it was pretty fun testing the limits of my temperature bar, and the crazy visuals kept me hooked.

My only real problem is that this is pretty much a game of patience - if you don't play risky whatsoever, you can reach much higher levels. As strategic as I wish this was, you really can't predict what happens after the initial bounce. That in of itself isn't necessarily bad, just a personal preference.

Great concept, great execution. This was  very unique.

Developer

thank you for playing! I agree there is some work to be done on the balance of it to keep it interesting

jajajajja loved the concept! Pretty neat. Also the science base is nice! Neat game

Developer

thank you for trying it out!

Very fun and addicting gameplay loop. Excellent blend of decision making and physics madness. It might not keep me entertained for hours, but I definitely got hooked and didn't want to stop. Got to level 14! Probably could have gone farther to get max non-heat spawning if I'd been more careful, even with the rods all the way down it's too late at that point.

For useful feedback, I would say Music would be an instant easy win. The retro sound effects were well done, but music makes a huge difference, especially if you want to keep people for a little while.

I was happily surprised at how well it performed in web with that many particles running around. No stutters at all. I can only image how nice it could look on desktop after you add a bit more juice to the graphics.

I actually was too engaged to check if there were more control options, but mouse controls are always awkward. WASD is preferred, with spacebar or enter to shoot. Gamepad is even better, but obviously not a priority in a gamejam.

Developer

Hey, thank you so much for the feedback! It is really encouraging.

Regarding the music there is 1 basic looping track, maybe there is a bug with it. Either way I definitely would plan to expand it :D

I loved the application of the theme, and the use of physics to cause chain reactions of decay. The physics also worked surprisingly smoothly at large scales. Was that the built-in physics engine, or did you use a physics plugin? The sound effects and music were also nice.

I tried to the juggling act a few times of using the rods, but I would always eventually meltdown. Eventually, I tried filling the whole screen with neutrons from the very beginning, so they immediately reacted with any atoms that spawned in. Then it just became a game of picking the right upgrades until my reactor had no more heat producing atoms.

This was still a joy to watch unfold, but not as fun to play. Maybe some upgrades should stack by multiplication instead of addition so the player never reaches 100%. [Edit: just saw the comment below, nothing new here :-P]

Overall, though, I still enjoyed this quite a lot! Great first submission to GWJ! I hope to see more :-)

Hey,

Thank you so much for the feedback! 100% makes sense to me. To answer your question, it is the built in physics engine, just with some carefully selected properties and masks/layers. It definitely does break down after a while still.
Also I updated my entry page because i realised i misread the final question. This is my second GWJ entry, I thought it asked how many previous :D

reading was 3.6 roentgen even during meltdown, so I feel like I did a pretty good job

gave up trying to crash it at lvl 100. original premise and it was fun to play around with it. great submission, congrats!

Developer

thank you :D

First time I played I got to level 9, but the second time I played, I made it all the way up to level 156. I stopped playing seeing how endless it was and how crunchy my audio was becoming once the screen was filled with grey. xD

Around level 50 I no longer needed to shoot or move rods anymore since having a bigger neuron kept reactions going infinitely and enough cooling upgrades + reduced heat upgrades made it so reactions no longer produced heat.

If this idea gets further developed, I would suggest having a cap on upgrade %s (if there weren't any already) and giving us a way to view our obtained upgrades. A cap would allow reactions to keep generating heat and keep the player from essentially afk farming energy. At one point, I had to avoid getting the Big Beautiful Neuron upgrade since already levelling up once or twice was more enough to make reactions continue endlessly.

Had fun watching things bounce for a while! :)

Developer

thank you for the feedback! its very useful and definitely aligns with my intent if i continue the project

Great interpretation of the theme!

Good execution make feel like some good foundation for incremental game with some educational value.
Game setting make it really unique because who is doing games about atoms :D

Would love have some more tutorial for game

Congratulations on your submission!

Developer

thank you for taking the time!

pretty fun, but kinda feels like im working towards nothing.

it's a metaphor for life

Developer

this is good feedback thank you. I definitely have ideas for meta progression and how it would fit into a wider loop, just not enough time in the jam :D

Fun to play!

thank you!

Update: got to level 170 before the only frames I got was of the level ups

This is super  fun  and perfect for the theme! Really well done, I loved it! I got to level 21

Took me a little to understand, but once it clicked this was amazing and super fun!!
