Hey! I played for the first time. The game has a really nice relaxing vibe. I just liked to keep playing with the music and overall design. I really love the SFX in the game, especially carts movement.
What I would improve:
- Animations are not clear for me. I got the feeling they are delayed or something. I always recommend doing animations in 0.2–0.3s so they are really responsive. In Godot you can easily make them using Tweens in code.
- Delay on animations makes it feel like I click something
- There should be a “close” button for popups like “Poker Combos”. It was not clear how to close them by clicking again. Using ESC for this could be a nice addition, because it’s often related to closing something.
- Not sure about the selling joker feature. I got null instead of a price.
- Tutorial could have more indicators to explain the game. At first I was not sure where to click to assign a card
- Maybe even set up cards to show the player how to win (script it)
I think you could just look at Balatro animations, they did a really good job to make the game really enjoyable. The game has potential, keep going. Congratulations on your submission!
Thank you for the great feedback!
I’m glad you could enjoy it and relax :D
I tried to iterate with Rootwarden. I even prepared a prototype, but it was messy and I couldn’t find improvements or proof that it’s worth scaling. I was even close to changing the game to a full RTS, but I felt I was against getting into a complete redesign… (almost the 7th?). It was exhausting, because doing another redesign means there is not much to show, just tons of work under the hood.
This project has similar core mechanics (buildings, units, complex systems etc.) with a clearer city-builder genre. I feel it’s now a good idea to push this project and then come back to Rootwarden with a set of improved mechanics and a refreshed idea for the game.
Probably that’s part of the gamedev journey. Experience that moment when sometimes we need to take one step back to make two forward next.
You made a lot of progress since the last time I played, cool!
General
- I like the option for a lite story. For sure it helps with testing :D
- New animations are good, the game looks better than before. Clear progress.
- I noticed you added special chill music for the pub section. I love that, especially the mechanic of switching music. Cool!
- Just curious — in the second pub there is a character named "Mniszek". Where does the name come from? Asking because it's a Polish (my first language) word for a yellow flower we use for medication.
About fights
- The difficulty level solved the previous problem of the lack of difficulty in the game. I tried the easiest one and the most difficult one. I can clearly see the difference and the manipulation of buff stats seems pretty ok.
- Status Effect is a good mechanic. Iit helps to make the fight more interesting and gives you much more possibilities to expand it.
- What I would improve is to make a better status tooltip, so instead of just the status name, I can read about what it does and stats.
- The top bar with the current step of the attack move is a good direction. I would use it to show the player a summary before the move, how much damage you would do compared to the life and armor of the enemy, so as a player it's much easier to rethink a move and maybe search for a better one. The top bar could be a place to show that info, that would be a good improvement to the fight mechanic.
So yes, recent changes make the fight more enjoyable. I still wonder if it's possible to go for some randomness in the fight so you could find a mechanic similar to Slay the Spire while keeping your story content. I still have a feeling that could be a direction worth checking.
Combat Log
- It's well designed. By default I would just hide it and add a visible "show combat log" button. I only looked there when I was interested in checking history, but I wasn't looking there constantly. For sure keep it, you can easily extend the mechanic.
The game is really polished and I like it. Just waiting for the Steam release to buy it. Keep working!
I played for the first time. First of all, I like the overall fantasy of the game.
Gravity control feels good. It was pretty clear how it works. Camera rotation and gravity swap feel good. What was confusing is the lack of reaction from the enemies to the gravity change. I guess that could be problematic for the game idea. I would love to see a reaction to the swap.
I feel the movement and combat could be more responsive. Maybe you could check how Hollow Knight solved movement to improve it. Animations are good, it was clear what is going on in combat.
I love the idea of the minimap. Pretty good mechanic for the game idea, cool!
Overall the game has potential, keep working!
Congratulations on your submission
I like this concept, it's a good design that the fight is controlled only by four action.
The fight is good, I was hooked by visuals and animations. The sound is good feedback during the fight.
I would love to keep the "sign" of attack for all enemies because it's pretty hard to react so fast to their movement. In first fight (tutorial) it was really good to keep up.
Congratulations on your submission!
Yep, we had similar idea for the game. I was hooked playing it because I like this kind of game :D
It was really cool to play a similar game. I was really appreciated that you added the tutorial tips to the game, that was something my game was missing so badly.
The second thing is the ability to remove the buildings, cool!
Besides that, I love this mechanic of fighting fires, it's a pretty clever way to keep the player "awake" and manage the city.
I love the idea for the environment, the planet and the view are super cool!
Congratulations on your submission!
Great entry! I love the base story gameplay.
The main loop is great, I was hooked to dig and search for the gold. Reaching back to deposit a gold is a really good mechanic. Upgrades keep the player motivated, cool!
btw. really cool main menu! *clap*
The game has potential, keep working!
Congratulations on your submission!
