Game description
W.A.V.E.S. is a very simple demo. It's an arcade style game that follows similar mechanics to Tumblepop or Snow Bros.

Theme interpretation
I tried to incorporate waves in everything. From the acronym in the Game's name to how the sound was created by using waves, to how the notes were put together on 1bitdragon to make the music. Wavy's swim is also represented by a wave sprite to show that it's swimming on the digital ocean. Basically I tried to use the concept for everything in the game.

My playthrough thoughts:

  • I like the starting controls page. And Wavy is cute! :D
  • The first enemy is too close to my spawn point. It's spawncamping me!
  • X has a shorter range than I'd expect. I thought I would simply need to press ZXZ, but I found that I actually need to press Z, move towards the stunned enemy, and then press X.
  • The first and only level was short but fun! But short! More please~

Thanks a lot for playing my game and candid feedback! Definitely agree with the enemy positioning, ideally the enemies should be better distributed across the screen, I was having issues with Phaser’s positioning and sizing, the final game will have a lot more polish in that regard as I know the “force player into hiding mode” isn’t exactly a good user experience, since any movement will end killing the player again, but once I have a more solid level editor made I don’t think we will have this issue anymore. About the range yes, my original idea was to kinda use that to make the player rely on the hiding mechanic to get closer to the enemies but for sure it can be balanced a bit more on the final version. Please look forward to the final version which I hope I get the chance to work on in the coming months. Happy new year!

That was fun to play! I can not wait to see what you have in store for us for the next levels!

Thanks a lot for playing! Please stay tuned, the full release may take some time, as I’m currently focusing on another game I was already working on before, but definitely Wavy will get to clean fully the infected system which of course means there will be plenty of more levels in the full game, which will be free of course.

Haha fun abilities! I like the inhaling and wave attacks.  Bummer it's so short! One thing is if you die at the start, that object will just keep recking you until it get's out of the way - maybe you could start invincible for a second or so.

Thanks for playing and the feedback! Yeah, there’s that scenario for which I made you start in hiding state by default after dying, to kinda prevent that from happening while keeping it “lore accurate” of why you have invincibility, but based on your feedback I am definitely gonna change it so you have some sort of mini anti virus shield for a couple of seconds, which would feel way more organic gameplay wise. Thanks again!

Pity that there is only the demo level available. First, I looked at the abilities and did not really understand why there was so many things I can do in this simple game. But after playing it, I think the abilities worked quite nicely together. I can see there could have been potential for a fun game with more time and more levels.

Developer

Thanks a lot for your playing and your feedback! I do plan on completing this game, I wanted to have the mechanics nailed down before committing to making more levels for the Jam, mostly because I did everything solo and only could work for limited time while I had a PTO. Plan is to have a more polished presentation and add unique bosses and stages to finally release the full game in a state I feel satisfied with. I hope you can give it a try once the full game gets released!

Good fun! I enjoyed the gameplay of "fire and forget" waves, then hiding then reappearing to eat - a promising gameplay loop!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback! I’m happy to hear you find it promising!

quite nice, the animation on the whale is super cute. the gameplay loop feels intuitive, exept the part that you can jump over the platforms (maybe I missed it in the otherwise well done tutorial). i wish it was longer, can really see the potential in this, had fun with this short demo

Developer

Thanks a lot for your feedback and for playing the game! Yeah I wanted it to play like some old arcade games from my childhood and there you have that kind of option to jump from below the platforms. I’ll take your feedback to expand upon the mini tutorial for the actual final version of the game and try to make it animated during the title screen so players can see it playing automatically (similar to how arcade games did it). I’m happy to hear you liked Wavy, it appreciates being liked, I will try to expand on it’s animations on the final game as currently most of the animations are super basic (3 frames max), since I didn’t want to overcommit for the short time I had to work on the game for the Jam. Thanks again!

While short, this is a very nice demo. With some graphics and audio improvements, and lengthening the game or perhaps making it endless somehow, I could even see it being sold on steam.

Developer

Thanks a bunch for playing and your feedback! Yeah my original plan is to make this game longer, you’d have multiple stages and even boss battles every 5 or 10 stages. I hope I get time to improve on the concept after gathering more feedback during the voting period, and ideally release it as a full game once it matches the quality I hope I can achieve. Thanks again!

Had a lot of trouble with the controls and generally just killing anything. Effectively was eliminated before I was even given a chance to shoot the wave. I think this could be resolved by creating a small delay for the shooting mechanism from the enemies.

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the feedback, it’s highly appreciated! I will consider this to try to provide a more fair challenge, did you try out pressing down arrow to have invincibility frames? The idea of the concept is that you can hide in the water wave to avoid damage from the enemies as well.
