Simple graphics, cool music, and clever gameplay idea :)
I think your game will benefit from addind grid snapping to the blocks so you don't end up in situations where you can't place a block because it's like one millimeter too close xD
I really liked your game! Good job!
Thank you!
I feel your pain on the grid snapping. It's a problem I've already addressed and will be in the post-jam updateb
This was a fun concept with a great sound track. I was not sure what to do at first because the question mark icon did not stand out to me immediately. If it shook or flashed a tiny bit at the beginning of the game it, might stand out more. Ideally, an optional tutorial showing you how to place blocks would be nice.
Once I understood the rules, I liked deciding where to place the blocks and watching the smooth movement of the red dot seeking out the yellow ones. I was confused at the end of both times I played when around round 3 or 4, I placed one block, clicked the button to discard so I could delete the second one (I had exactly 6 points, so I could), then for some reason, all the blocks exploded and it said game over. I had not even started the round yet.
Yeah that was a bit of an oversight on my part. The game ends if you ever get reduced to 0 even if it's exact. Should have been anything that would take you before 0
General:
I found this game very innovative! At first, I was confused that the ball moves on its own, but once I understood the core concept, I was completely hooked. Great idea from you. I like that it all takes place in a single room, but you keep building it up more and more and have to think ahead for potential future rounds. Maybe you could even offer a selection of blocks from which the player has to choose at least two or three each round. Very cool!
I tried to work very precisely, but at some point my ball unfortunately got stuck while collecting the yellow dot (image attached).
Graphics:
Very simple, but absolutely functional. It reminds me of retro games like those on the C64. You could potentially spice it up a bit and it would work well as a casual/mobile game (comic-style blocks with eyes?), but even as it is, it has a certain vibe and I really appreciate the retro feeling.
Music/Sound:
The music is very fitting and almost ideal; the loop is just a bit too short for my taste. A slightly longer loop would make it feel less repetitive over time.
Theme:
Perfectly matched!
Conclusion:
An innovative game with a nice strategic component! A very interesting submission!
Very interesting glitch you encountered. I ran into situations where the yellow dot couldn't be collected because of blocks too close but never saw your particular glitch!
Thanks for the kind words and detailed feedback! Glad you enjoyed!
Very interesting game, unique and engaging Tetris-adjacent puzzler, cool entry!! The path-finding of the ball is super satisfying to watch and I found myself rooting for the lil guy, even thought it was just a simple red circle. Kind of neat how much emotional investment was created in a game made of only simple shape sprites. The presentation works well overall, the limited color palatte and shapes puts an emphasis on the gameplay and has a nice arcade feel to it. The animation/effect when deleting one of your blocks was a good addition of juice. I think some more moments of particle/animation stuff in this vein would help polish things up even more.
The core game loop is satisfying, and is a spot-on take on the theme. Top-down Tetris with an escort mission fits the theme perfectly and I thought your interpretation was super cool. Something like different challenge levels (use only t-shapes, pass a level using 10 shapes at once, etc) or wacky upgrades (merging shapes together, blocks that allow the circle to pass one way but not the other, etc) would help at some more depth and replay ability to the whole thing imo. The background song was super solid and all the sfx feel like they fit the world well. I think the readability of the UI/text could be improved. Overall, I think you have a very solid core game mechanic and one of the best theme interpretations in the jam. The art works but there is room for more polish. More levels or upgrade variety could help flesh out the game to a longer experience. I very much enjoyed my time with your game and think you have a very well-done entry. Keep up the great work!!
Wow, thanks for such kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed!
I've continued to add on more polish and variety outside the context of the jam in an unreleased build. It'll get uploaded after judging, if you're interested!
Also, those are some cool ideas for adding variety! Thanks for the suggestions!
Yeah shoot me a reply when you put an updated build up, I'd be curious to check it out!
The gameplay is actually quite different from what I imagined based on the images. I was thinking it would be something like rotating the environment to make the red ball land somewhere, but that wasn’t the case at all haha.
I admit that at first, I was a bit confused about what to do, even though I read the tutorial several times. It might be interesting to have an extremely basic level that introduces the player to the core mechanics, so they can understand what they’re supposed to do before jumping into the actual game.
The search algorithm you implemented is really well done. It’s hard to get something that precise in games, especially considering you did everything in about 25-30 hours!
The game is pretty challenging if you don’t think strategically and have patience, which might turn away casual players. But that doesn’t mean the game is bad by any means—it’s just that its audience might be a bit more limited due to its complexity.
I think to expand it further, it would be essential to have a mechanic that allows you to remove blocks by spending some of the resources you earn from your score.
Really original and fun concept, I don’t remember seeing anything quite like it before, so it was a really pleasant surprise. I had a lot of fun while playing, and the challenge is just the right level. Congrats on the game, and best of luck in the jam!
P.S:
The name fits the game perfectly. Even though it’s a clear reference to the gameplay, I only understood it after giving it a try
Thanks for playing and for the detailed review!
Honestly, Godot did most of the heavy lifting with the pathfinding. I just had to figure out how and when to decide to shift targets.
The tutorial definitely needs to be something more substantial. I just cobbled something together near the end of development and ended up wishing I had devoted time to it.
Similarly for erasing old blocks, I originally planned to have that in but decided not to for reasons I can no longer fathom.
Thanks for all the kind words and good luck to you as well!
I'm a bit confused on the gameplay, i thought for a sec it will be like tetris because the art reminds me about them, but the gameplay was different than what I expected. Once i got the grip on how to play,it was giving me joy really, especially the red dot path finding was superb I'd say great job! The game can be a lot tougher on late game due to the block being clumped but overall it's a great game, an interesting take on the theme and the gameplay. Well done!
Thank you!
This game is pretty abstract and satisfying once you figure out what to do!
The instructions themselves take a bit of reading but once you do, it works pretty well.
I loved the path finding algorithm you built. It would easily make an excellent zombie survival type of game where zombies chase you and find their path though you have placed obstacles!
Other than that, it's pretty solid entry!
Thanks!
Could definitely stand to simplify the rules explanation, maybe through a short tutorial instead.
I went in with the idea "tower defense but you're not allowed to damage anything" and this is what it morphed into.
Hey there! This is a pretty good game and a super unique idea. It took me like 3 minutes to wrap my head around what's going on but after I got it, I gotta say it's really fun to play with. The music was pretty simple which fit the overall aesthetic and visual you were going for. Some things I probably would say for a critique is maybe during runtime we should be able to see if the position is valid or not and the upgrades could be interchanged every round. But other than that, super solid entry!
Thanks for playing, glad you had fun!
100% on board with both improvements and they'll likely both make their way into the post-jam update.
Let's go cant wait for it
Changing
cool game but i wanted to be like you can remove blocks by coins
Thanks for playing!
I debated during development on whether or not to include that as a mechanic. I eventually landed on including it as an upgrade but didn't quite get to adding that particular upgrade. Maybe should have just been a base mechanic.
Cool little game!
I kinda wish the shape changed colour or indicated when it was in a viable position before hitting start round as it was a bit finicky trying to sneak shapes in so close together but having to press the button to test if it was viable was a little annoying.
Also early on I put a shape close to the yellow dot but then it no longer could collect that dot for some reason even with a viable path around the shape :(
Overall fun game and a great entry into the game jam!
well done!
Thanks for the feedback!
Love the idea of previewing if the spot is valid. Good luck with your ratings!
I had fun! Really solid gameplay that made me consider every move. Graphics and sound are minimalist, but in a cool, retro way. I'm not 100% clear on the rules. I lost after I bought an upgrade (that I could afford).
As for the theme use. It was ok for one room, but if you submitted this game for "limited space" two months ago, it would be perfect :)
Over all- really cool puzzle game! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I think the missed understanding with the rules is that being reduced to 0 for any reason ends the game. It should probably be below 0 since it basically functions as both life and money.
I appreciate the kind words!
Yeah, that makes sense- I had 12 credits, and wanted to buy an upgrade for 12 :)
Really fun puzzle game which captured the theme of 'one room' very well! The increasing feeling of claustrophobia really made you think about the placement of shapes. It was a very innovative concept also, havent really seen a puzzle game like this!
The powerups were good, but i ended up not using most and saving most of my bits for discarding.
The art was also well made and suitable for such kind of a puzzle game, but i think could have used a bit more polish. The music and SFX fit the vibe of the game well.
Overall this was a unique and interesting take on the theme and well implemented, well done :)
Thanks for playing!
Definitely lots more polish I would have added with more time.
Glad you enjoyed!
Very cool concept and relaxing gameplay. The combination of random actions each playthrough really does a lot for replayability and made me curious about all the options you can get.
I did feel like the game could've benefited from a grid for placement. Sometimes it didn't feel like it was touching anything but still failed to place properly.
Still found the gameplay very enjoyable and unique!
