The game is hard to play on pc but seems to be played in mobile, also it can be really hard to understand what happen visually but overall it's fun !

I had a lot of fun with this one ! Really juicy Breakout-style game, with interesting features that work great together so a lot of things happen during every game ! You made the 20s rule fit the concept perfectly, it adds a whole lot of challenge !

With that + the music and BOOM it kept me going for maybe 30 minutes of "okay just one more game" haha. I didn't manage to clear all the boxes but still managed to score 1950 points :)

Great submission VN !

Thanks for enlisting, and i'm glad you've found some fun! :)

oh, man… had to stop myself chasing the leaderboard after i spent 20m on it! well done, my friend… tightly wound. i would download this to goof off on my phone for sure!

extra grateful for the shift key blitzing through the everything so i could chase the board some more. ^_~

Developer(+1)

well, i'm glad you've enjoyed :)

ideally, i'd work on making the web version mobile/touch-friendly like i did HERE, except that was designed from the start to be as mobile friendly. with the left/right directions + fire and nudge, i'm imagining 3 buttons on each side near/at the bottom but when i was starting the game, i figured our fingers would obscure crucial parts of the screen so i nixed it immediately. alas, i do want to work on a post-jam version so maybe i can make the mobile aspect happen.

and, yeah, since my last buncha games have leaderboards that i want to climb (as fast as possible), i try to make it easy to dive back in :)

thanks for playing, and your comment :)

This one's not easy!

Exactly the kind I would have downloaded onto my iPod 1 lol

Developer(+1)

ha! :) i never had a device like that, and i was the last on the planet to buy a cell phone, i think. probably because i was a afraid to disappear in a corner playing games for who knows how long i'd be gone...

but! it's 2025 and i gotta continue wading into the conveniences of modern fun, so... a mobile version is on my mind.

thanks for checking it out :)

Alright, Virtual Nomad. I just played your game, Volleytile!, and I had a really fun time with it! I mean, it's basically just a simple Breakout clone, except that you have to do it in 20 seconds to achieve the high score. To be honest, this game was also kind of difficult for me to gain a high score. I like on how that there's extra gimmicks and items here and there to keep the game flow going, but when I got like a rocket power-up, I had no idea on how to use it, because I wasn't given any controls on how to use it. Overall, at the end of the day, it's just your average Breakout played in 20 seconds, and a very good execution on that. 4/5 stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐. Really great work, Virtual Nomad!

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing, and the feedback :)
unfortunately i kept the controls, etc,  only on the project page itself (ie, click Operations there) but should have included some basic instructions inside the game, too.
regarding the weapons themselves, there are different approaches to using them, i've found. some take advantage of any lull in the action to fire off while others hold on to the weapons to wind up the last few seconds with trying to eliminate any remaining crates (where clearing them all = Award points).
i know i'll re-visit this project to shore up the fun factor so thanks again for the feedback :)

So much going on in the 20 seconds, it's a jam-packed jam game! Easy to pick up, difficult to master, fun to play throughout

Developer (3 edits)

packed is the word :) and, some of the guts belong to RNGesus where the contents of the crates do affect "success". the bombs, for example, are directed randomly on spawn which can trigger a chain of BOOM while others simply drop and give you something (else) to dodge. i do like RNG but that leans more toward a "you can't master" random aspect that can only be overcome through "one more play"!

thanks for playing, nolan! and thank you for including it your stream which was great all-around 20sGJ goodness :)

I love how loud and in your face the sounds are in this :D

Great implementation of everything as always. I especially like the added customization of the icon to the names!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thank you, gabe. and it's very much in your face and meant for those who dont mind a little soot or shrapnel on theirs :)

the "patches" or icons is something i started using with a prior jam game and do enjoy the customization/small polish it brings to a leaderboard so i hope to continue that bit of fun wherever i can, going forward. in my last jam game, some of that is in there but not as directly chosen by the player.

1230, I'm very far from the high-scores but I've really enjoyed it!

Really good work on the sound design, it makes everything so epic! Good job!

Developer

thank you! and i could have brought more BOOM with variety of sounds, etc, but it's all conveyed well enough, i believe.

meanwhile, as i've played ~1,000 times at this point, i'm safe on the leaderboard, for now... if you find yourself with plenty of sugar or caffeine in your system sometime, perhaps you can change that :)

It's a cute, fun little game. It's amazing how well the VFX and style fit.

Developer(+1)

thanks for stopping by, shotgun :)

Fun and chaotic lol. Happy that I am not last on the leaderboards :)

Developer

cracking the 2K mark is great, KAP'n!

thanks for playing :)

This game is nuts in the best way lol. Really easy to pick up and start playing immediately

Developer

thanks for enlisting :) it's getting tough to make the leaderboard but i'll be watching for SIN!

I like this game! Nice job :)

Nice amount of juice. I didn't fully understand the scoring but somehow got over 2k, would be great if there were an in-game glossary of sorts that explains how to get each medal and its value.

Interaction between the paddle and the ball is not like in other Breakout games I played (Blasterball 3, Super DX Ball...) - in those games, the ball gets deflected in a different direction depending on which part of the paddle it hit, while in your game the ball stays at the same angle unless it hits the very edge of the paddle. As a result, it feels very difficult to control the ball. More often than not when trying to redirect, the ball would deflect at a horizontal angle and become unable to escape gravity, ruining the run. I wish there were more ways to control the ball, e.g. hitting it with your bomb would launch it forward with force.

Other than that, a couple nitpicks is that the gate is covered by UI, so it took me a while to figure out that you're actually supposed to get the ball in there. I also couldn't immediately figure out what the firing button was - an in-game tooltip would be ideal, and I would advise against hiding the controls like you did on the game page. It saves space, but someone quick-scanning the info may end up never noticing them or the fact that the dropdown arrow is clickable

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thanks for playing, and your feedback :)

i think the most control comes from the friction between the ball and paddle "vehicle". ie, if you're moving right or left, the ball will direct accordingly with the wind doing its thing from there.

Nice game! Got 1190 points doing a no weapons run.

Developer(+1)

thank you for playing, and that's a great score, weapons or not. Flophat had played a Pacifist approach and was able to score quite low (under 50, i believe). perhaps a Pacifist/Disarmed mode is in order, post-jam :)

A great remake of the good old Arkanoid. A nicely polished game with a leaderboard that never fails to remind me how miserable my score is :D

Developer(+1)

ha! i'm just glad you gave it a run and found some fun :)

thanks for playing, and the kind words!

Very fun, polished little game! Nice!

Really fun game and hits right in the nostalgia!!

Developer(+1)

a sort of classic, nostalgic fun seems to be my niche, and i'm glad you appreciate it!

Fun little game! Lots of replayability. I played at the very beginning but have never been able to beat my score. Until now :D

Developer(+1)

thanks for revisiting, and there's always a score to beat (i know the max hasn't yet been achieved ;) ).

I feel nostalgic playing it, I had fun. : )
Thank you for making it

Developer (1 edit)

thank YOU for making BOOM!
