JAM RULES & HOW TO PUT WARNINGS ON YOUR ENTRY

This section covers some basic rules, and frequently asked questions such as:

  • What content is/is not allowed
  • What kinds of projects can be submitted (i.e. format, 2D vs 3D etc.)
  • Information about resubmitting a previous yan jam project

For any resources/tips, please read the other thread I have sticky’d here.

What kind of content is not allowed?

  • Bestiality
  • Loli/Shota/Underage
  • Any sort of incest/pseudo-incestual content
  • No entries which contain and advocate hate speech, discrimination or bigotry
    • As with last year’s clarification on the bigotry rule: ** please make sure any content that is sensitive or potentially triggering is tagged in your work, both on the game page and inside the game**.
  • Entries that fail to provide proper content and/or trigger warnings in game and/or in the game page will be removed from the jam
  • REGARDING A.I. TOOLS: Yandere Jam continues to not accept entries or projects which have utilised any type of Generative A.I. tools and/or assistance and/or generated assets (of any kind.) Any entry or project submitted to this jam which uses A.I. will be removed/disqualified and the participant who submitted the entry will be banned from future Yandere Jam events without appeal. This game jam is about uplifting human creators and storytellers, not plagiarism machines :).
  • REGARDING NSFW CONTENT: Due to the recent legislations and payment processor changes itch.io has been impacted by, I cannot ensure anyone that their project won’t be delisted in general by the platform itself. I will keep accepting NSFW entries, so long as they are declared in a distinguishable manner from other entries (e.g. like all content warnings, should be on the game page and within the game itself (if possible.))

What kind of game formats are allowed?

  • Demos
  • Full games
  • Pre-existing projects that fit the jam’s theme (including previously submitted entries WHICH MUST INCLUDE NEW CONTENT IF RESUBMITTED.)
  • Anything 2D (visual novel, interactive fiction, point & click etc.)
  • Anything 3D (board games, card games, games using 3D assets or game engines etc.)

Resubmitting a previous years’ entry?

This is a question which seems to come up time and time again, and I feel as though I have been quite clear about this. Please make sure you read these posts carefully to avoid any confusion with your submission/project.

  • This jam is primarily made to showcase new projects and work, to encourage people new to or sparsely experienced in games development to keep working on their skills.
  • As such, we do not accept repeat submissions which have no new content. If you would like to re-submit a project you have submitted in a prior year of Yandere Jam, it must have new content.

Examples:

  • Example 1: Your initial project had a ‘day 1’, but since you have added additional narrative/gameplay content, such as a ‘day 2’. This entry is okay to re-submit because it adds substantial content for people to play through and interact with, beyond just rewriting original scenes.
  • Example 2: You want to re-submit a project which has re-worked visual assets (sprites, UI, so forth.) This would not qualify for a re-submission because there is no new or expanded narrative or gameplay content.
  • Example 3: You want to re-submit a project which has undergone additional gameplay (e.g. mini-games etc. interactive segments) and/or narrative content (re-written scenes.) You would need to reach out to me or others to test if your updated game had changed enough to be not recognisable, and thus, have enough new content for people to go through.

How do I know what to tag as a ‘trigger’ vs as a ‘content’ warning on my page/entry?

  • This section has been moved to the resource thread, which you can find here.
