This was pretty engaging, I didn't notice the time going by. Nice absurdity in the theme, the visuals definitely suit it. Controls smoothly, too.In later parts, I was getting annoyed by half the jobs needing food safety license (for librarian, WHYY), and getting no classes for that. I get that is probably random chance, but I got blocked pretty hard by that. The unfairness kinda fit the mood, though :)

This game is super fun! The end got super hard and I didn't make it through, but I like the upgrade tree and leveling up my heroes with different classes and skills.

I really enjoyed playing - the audio and graphics are very charming!! Who knew unemployment and temp job assignments could be so fun??

I really love this take on the theme, nicely done! At the end I ran into some difficulty because my heroes were total duds with low skills and would leave before I could train them up. But honestly that's OK and I didnt mind at all, maybe I just need to get good and it's a skill issue lol. Awesome job with this!!

Developer

Dud heroes certainly become a problem at the end. I planned but didn't implement in time an upgrade that would increase minimum hero stats to 2. The late game will hopefully be more fun and less of a slog after the jam. Thanks for playing!

A few bugs I came across:

  • Sometimes a hero will spawn and won't be able to get attributes to upgrade from classes
  • Kept getting license needs for jobs but
    • Did not have a way to pull the card with a license
    • Never received the class with the corresponding  license (food safety license)
  • Cards for heroes don't consistently select the job when being dropped on

Things I liked:

  • being able to upgrade heroes through classes
  • doodle graphics are fun
  • music is nice
  • sfx for sound slider ui (made it clear what the changed)

Critiques:

  • I wish the menu settings were accessible in game
    • having to restart a round due to the audio could get frustrating
  • I think that shuffle should be free once periodically (maybe once per round)
  • I personally feel that licenses should be accessible at all times

Over all I had fun and was happy to play your game :)

Wow, thanks for the in-depth critique, I appreciate it!  For the first point, do you mean a hero was spawning without attributes or the classes weren't working?

Submitted(+1)

The classes weren't working. The hero spawned with a few attributes but I couldn't increase it.

This was a very creative, full-featured game. I played for quite a while. I really liked the tutorial. The sound design was good. You had a whole tech tree.

I got to the point where I was training for Food Safety and Forklift licenses, but they didn't seem to actually get applied to the characters. That was my only issue.

This was a really solid, well-rounded game! Congrats!

Nice submission, and I appreciate that you had a tutorial that explained all the game systems. The music added to the atmosphere, and I thought the art for the heroes was good. I really liked the deck building aspect of the temp job cards.

This is a really fun game! I liked the dejected expressions of the poor adventurers getting drafted into regular 9-5's, and it's very on-the-nose when you see a position for a janitor expecting 7 communication, 5 paperwork, and 0-5 Labor paying 4 dollars. Like yes, that's just every job posting for an entry level position these days lmao.

I'm impressed how you designed this very well thought out system.

It took a moment but it clicked fairly easily and made a lot of sense while slowly introducing new concepts, a cool take on a card battler.

Nice work on the entry.

This was enjoyable. The tutorial was pretty good. The gameplay loop was easy to pick up. The stats made sense. It did get a bit frustrating once the certifications were introduced. RNG is RNG, but there were far too many cases of most, or all, jobs requiring a certification, and then several turns without getting the 1 class I had with it. It was better once unlocking all the extra slots, but even then I did have cases of all 4 requiring the same certification. Overall, a good jam submission.

good art work. the theme just reminds me of Frieren Im gonna weep..

also the UI control feels smooth.

Gameplay wise, I feel it is like a puzzle game where you have to match jobs with heros that qualifies ALL. If they only qualify for ONE of the requirement only, the game does not guide me which to choose from.

Game play has potential. Keep polishing it.

Developer

Yeah, the jobs need all the skills met. Thinking about it the tutorial only used one skill at a time to keep things simple. I could check the dialogue and see about making it more clear. Thanks for playing!

I finished it! An impressively involved game. I did feel like it was a bit of a slog toward the end but that’s only after playing the game for longer than, I think, any other game in the jam. Good work!

Submitted(+1)

Ah, of course, repurposing the heroes for modern day jobs! :D I love the idea! The game is very pleasant, you can play for a long time. There’s a lot of potential for great graphics here with the theme. The music is fun, a bit repetitive, I wish there was a longer loop or several tracks. I had a ton of fun though, I played it for a long time and I’d look forward to playing some more. Great job!

Fun game. Love love love the music and the controls felt very smooth. Thank you for letting the player continue to the next day with "space"! It felt very natural. I plan to come back to this one and play more.

Developer(+1)

Your comment confused me at first since I didn't code the spacebar in. Then I realized I always defaulted to assigning spacebar to UI_accept. Clicking the button once gives it focus so the spacebar could afterwards unintentionally be used instead. Happy little accidents. I'll definitely make that official after the jam's over!

Haha, that worked out well!

Such a cool unique idea for the theme! Was looking forward to trying this one when I saw it in the discord, great stuff!

Developer

It’s really cool to hear someone was looking forward to play my game,  makes me feel like I’m on the right track. Thanks for the compliments!

Good fit with the theme! I like the tech tree that you implemented. I can see some potential in this game if you decide to pursue it further
