A pretty interesting idea. I quite like it.
I'm a bit sad there are no special way to score points. like multiplier for long words or maybe a timed bonus for using specific letters in the next word.
Anyway this is a chill and fun experience.
Good Job
Definitely gives a balatro/scramble feel. I did have a an easy time due to me just making long words used over and over which hard mode solves. I don't really know the difference between normal and easy. There were some words like "mad" that I was not able to input in. I assume you have an incomplete dictionary list of words?
Thanks for playing! Yeah the profanity filter I used was a bit too aggressive, I had to add back a lot of words, even ones that don't make sense at all like "lop" and "food", but I guess I missed "mad".
Sound and animations are nice, typing feels tight. Cool that you added multiple difficulty modes.
This is a fun brain teaser; I spent a good while playing on easy difficulty just trying to come up with long words.
The combo/item effect animations & sounds are quite satisfying; as is the shader effect on the letter buttons.
I could see this game being developed further. Nice job!
Very polished and fun! Some letters (like Q and M) seem to only be playable once. Is that intended?
Thanks for playing! The letters are only playable for as many times as they appear in the quote at the top of the screen.
I definitely got caught up in the loop and ended up enjoying this one for a solid 10-15 mins, very fun!
Only gripe would be that you can't play another word while the previous word is being scored. Kinda disrupts the flow, especially when you're working against the clock. Having some kind of combo system that rewards scoring words while the other is still completing could be a good way to raise the skill ceiling and reward players in this instance rather than hold them up.
Apart from that, this game is really well put together and very addictive, fantastic work!
I did consider having you be able to queue up a bunch of words, but I couldn't find a clean way to visualize it. I also feel like if I went down that route, the skill ceiling shoots up really high, because then it's just as much a "come up with a word" game as it is a "how fast can you type" game. I'll have to think about this, thanks for the suggestion.
This took me a bit to get into it, but once I did, I enjoyed. As someone who isn’t the best at spelling, I appreciate games that can make spelling fun. I’ve played games were you are given a single word, or just a group of letters, and told to make as many words as possible. Being given a quote to work from was a cool way to do it. I didn’t acknowledge it at first, but, when I did, I really liked that you were limited to the number of each letter in the quote. It rewarded trying to make longer and higher scoring words early on, but still let me make easier words instead of just sitting and staring at the set of letters.
I also greatly appreciated the different difficulty settings. I lost my first round on normal, so went to easy to better figure out how best to play and get myself into the right headspace to focus on spelling. After a couple of plays on easy, I went back to normal and won.
The background feels a little busy, making it a little difficult to read the quote. I realized that it was better to wait until the end of the round to try to read it than try to read it at the start. The sound started rather quiet, though was nice after I turned the volume up, and, in all honest, it’s better to err on the side of quieter and let folks turn it up over too loud to start.
I think you did a good job of making a fun spelling game.
Thank you for the detailed feedback. I'm very happy to hear that you tried out easy after struggling with normal, that's exactly what I wanted people to do! But now that you've conquered normal, you should try hard if you think you can manage, it's a real mind bender.
brother this game is crazy fun. I BEG YOU, please keep working on this. This is crack. I offer my help as a non paid artist to develop it. CRAZY fun.
Thanks for playing, your art is fantastic!
I will make you a small promise: if this game wins this jam (it won't) then I will CONSIDER doing a post-jam update.
Glad you liked it :)
Ooooh, I could spend so much time playing this haha. Awesome game loop, and perfectly satisfying audio/visual feedback when typing/accumulating points, too.
I feel it would work well as a mobile game, tons of replay potential. Congrats on a great game!
Thanks, glad you liked it. There was a lot of focus on the visual elements, less so on the gameplay.
(btw the game does technically work on mobile, it's just kinda slow in my experience)
I loved the 2d 3d shader! Nice take on this, it felt fun and nice. Maybe you could add a combo or increasing multiplier for longer words, to make players want to try to get longer words?
I second the comment below, everything feels really polished! And it got me very curious to see how everything got implemented.
Thanks! And trust me, you really don't want to see it lol. It's an absolute mess of spaghetti code. That said, there is one system that is reasonably polished, and that's the item system... which I basically copied directly from this video (source in the description of the video).
This games feels really polished!
I like the music, power ups/, sfx, the UI feels responsive and easy to read, good and simple art style too!
My only criticism is the quotes don't effect the gameplay as much as I initially expected.
It's easy to pass through the levels without reading the initial quote.
Overall great game!
Glad you liked it! And yeah, that's fair. There was a point very early in development where I just stopped reading the quotes entirely lol... I considered giving the quotes more of a... ceremony to introduce them, with them being read aloud and the letters dropping down, but ran out of time for that.
