The aesthetic and audio choices made are great for this little jam game.
Despite the typos laced throughout the UI of the game, you get sucked into the ambience and mindset of the “ally”.
Dragging the army units forward once you’ve progressed a certain amount in the game was a tad tedious - I wish I could have them closer to the front of the line as the game went on.
The difficulty didn’t feel too high, but I can see the potential of raising the bar, and how it would get more elaborate with more gameplay. Well done, and thanks for the entry
I'm happy you enjoyed the game aesthetic :) I worked really hard on making it an immersive visual experience. As for the level being longer, i ran out of time to make more levels that could have been paced better. And thank you so much for your vote of confidence of this game jam project having potential for future development. 👍
Rather than longer levels, shorter levels could be better. I would say making it so that the line of allies changing as you reach checkpoints in "longer levels" may be worth thinking about. But yes, very cool visual vibes, you can be very proud of it!
I totally agree the checkpoints are a must. I'm still think over weather i want to take this game jam project any further, but its definitely a possibility.
Good luck either way, I think you can definitely keep this artstyle in mind for future tinkerings at the very least!
I love the art style, I also liked the audio and the menu, a nice addition would be the multi selection for the soldiers
Glad you enjoyed the art style of the game :) I tried my best to create that World War 2 old film footage feel to it.
It's a cool idea and new gameplay, I've never tried it, but it would be fun if we developed this branch of games as a strategy. But it seems to me that it is not yet very clear how the game controls work.
Glad you like the idea of the game. As for controls, its just click on a unit --> move the camera to a spot --> then select a spot on the ground --> then the troops move and automatically shoot. Although even though i did lots of testing, the movement can still be finicky at times.
Pretty cool idea and gameplay! It sort of felt Red Alert / RTS adjacent, almost like a reverse tower defense where you're actually the one deploying the waves. Would have loved to be able to select multiple troops to send them all as a group to a location and set up rally points. I know it's a lot to ask for the jam period so I don't mean it as a criticism, just thinking that polishing up a few things and adding some of those feature might make this even closer to a complete idea that could actually turn into a fun tablet game.
Loved the overall aesthetic and feel you got with the camera filter and projector sound. The real sound clip from a broadcast was a really nice touch.
So glad you enjoyed my mini RTS experience. And I'm glad someone else found the original BBC Audio as fascinating as I did :) And thank you so much for your high praise, this game is defiantly missing a lot of quality of life and main features. But to be even considered close to a "real" game is really uplifting. Thank you 💛
Looks amazing, and it plays quite well too. I too also would have loved a multi-select tool and more quality of life changes as well as a bit more variability in enemy. But for a week's project the visuals alone are nothing short of impressive.
So glad you like the aesthetics of the game, i worked hard on making them immersive :) There are defiantly things i wanted to add but didn't have time for, but such is the nature of game jams.
Fantastic aesthetic! I really liked the grainy film post processing effect you had on everything.
This game kind of felt like it rewarded throwing as many expendable soldiers as possible into a couple dozen Germans like a meat-grinder rather than carefully managing determined and talented troops. That may have been intentional, and that's a very valid commentary to have on the nature of war.
I found the pathing unpredictable, making strategic troop positioning hard to do. It was also hard to move multiple units to a nearby location as the move command would also select soldiers. Some feedback on the commands would have been nice!
The presentation with the soldiers looks great. The animation is well done and my soldiers were easy enough via context clues to distinguish from the Germans. I also was a fan of some of the atmospheric audio choices, and couldn't stop think about the boogie woogie bugle boy of company B every time I heard the horn go off and see my new wave come in!
So glad you enjoyed the games atmosphere. :) I worked hard on trying to make it look and sound like old WW2 film footage. As for the controls, i wish i had more time flesh things out more, but such in the nature of game jams.
Very nice presentation although I felt I wanted to see the nice soldier animations in colour.
It looks like a few Jam entries went for the 1940s black and white look.
It's a nice idea - feels a bit like storming Omaha Beach but the game play is limited to just moving the units forward.
It's crying our for a multi-select option as once there are lots of troops it takes a while to advance them all to the front line. Also, the click unit-click destination appears to be a bit buggy which I was able to exploit to get multiple units to move at once :).
Nice effort for one weeks work!
The lack of color was deficiently a stylistic choice for this particular project. But I'm glad you manage to get through the game :)
You really sold the visual style, it actually looked like an old news broadcast. I would have mapped the move unit button to the right mouse click. Instead of having the select and move mapped to the same button, because if I miss click on the wrong unit I have no choice but to then move that unit. I'm sure you wanted more strategic decisions in the game but didn't have time (I feel your pain, I had a similar issue when I made a game about ww1). But having some options to crouch, hide behind objects would have been neat. Congrats on finishing.
I am really proud of the visual style for this project :) And your correct that i wanted to add so much more but didn't have time to do so.
The game looks good, cool graphics concept. I think it lacks some gameplay depth, for example different types of soldiers.
Glad you liked the look of the game. As for the minimal gameplay, i ran out of time before i could add much more.
