A simple and slick game. The epitome of short and sweet is basically this game :]! As someone who left a softlock in my own game, gamejam deadlines do cause that so it's fine. As a guy with a trackpad, this is certainly a bit harder but I still found myself enjoying the movement and attacks! :D

You did a really good job of adding juice into this game and making things very slick, if this game doesn't count as slick, I don't know what does xD!

Awesome stuff bud!

This game is super effin' addicting, it sucked me in

Remind me a lot of the games by AdamVision Studios, and those are some of my favorite, modern short-form score chasers. I may just add this to the list of games to play while I'm listening to podcasts. The SFX/VFX juice is spot on, the music is groovy, and the gameplay mechanics are all satisfying to pull off.

Great job here! You should be proud :)

Thank you so much, it means a lot! :)

wow, this was your first jam? this game is amazing. a lot of juice and really hooked me. basically a rhythm game of dashing with their shots

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words and for checking out my game! To be precise, it was my first video game jam! I did take part in a local board game jam not long ago, where I made a game with a group of friends about collecting glyphs and breaking into a safe. Although the only similar thing between the two jams was the stress during the last few hours before submission :D

I did not expect to like this one as much as I did!! I wasn't sure what to expect given the minimalistic art style and the fact that this is your first ever submission, but WOW...I love pretty much every part of this. There is a surprising level of polish on display here. I was particularly impressed when it came to the tutorial - with typical jam submissions, you're lucky to get button prompts included on the main menu. The tutorial here would not be out of place in a commercially available product.

The art style and VFX in general are superb and fit the gameplay very well. I really like the touch of the "dash indicator" being constrained to the maximum dash distance, which allowed me to easily gauge where I would end up regardless of whether my mouse was placed outside the movement radius or not. The music is a highlight as well (especially how it continues across runs; this is a great way to keep the player in flow). Not to mention how simple yet fun the core gameplay loop is as well...suffice it to say, I had a great time with this one, and I hope to see it further developed after the jam is over (that is, if you're still interested). Outstanding work!!

Thank you for giving it a shot! I’m certain I will fix the bugs and maybe make it more accessible. I’ll also try to address the complaints I received and give more thought to all the great suggestions.

I didn’t expect so many people would play my game, let alone enjoy it. I wanted to add many more things but wasn’t able to because of time constraints. Seeing that people are looking forward to the things I make definitely gives me more motivation to continue development.

I’m glad I decided to join this jam from one of my favorite YouTubers. It’s probably one of the best jams I could have started with. The community here is really kind, and I’m cheering for everyone, there are just so many amazing games!

What a great Game! Only was cappable of getting to 36s due to my reaction time being abysmal. Definetly one I will pick up again to raise my score.

This game is a real banger. The music firstly was so good. Big fan of that. I also felt the gameplay loop was arcadey and addictive. Every time I failed I had to keep coming back. I have 2 minor criticisms though, I feel the sprites being simplistic is fine for this but I do hope you continue working on this and maybe doing like full character sprites and animations, it has a lot of potential! The second criticism, I wish the parry was just a standard move rather than needing to fill the gauge. And maybe when you fill the gauge you have invincibility for like 5 seconds or something. Otherwise though, it was real fun and well done!

Thanks for playing! I’m glad you enjoyed it.

I’ve been thinking about replacing the programmer art with actual sprites in the future. Right now, it’s probably hard to sell the idea that you’re supposed to be some kind of samurai without explicitly stating it. I’d still go with a fairly simple art style for readability, though.

I implemented the gauge because I was concerned that having no limit on parrying would reduce the incentive for players to get close to enemies, since parrying would be the easier way to defeat them. Personally, I’d just stand there and parry all incoming projectiles, and the game would turn into more of a rhythm clicker. I don’t really want players to rely on parrying that much, my initial idea was for it to be more of a lifesaver in tight situations, with slashing as the main way to deal with enemies.

I’ve seen other people mention that they dislike the bar as well, so maybe a cooldown would be more appropriate, or more ways to fill it during gameplay. I’m for sure gonna try to come up with something.

Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it!

I really like getting to dash around. The game has simple controls, which makes it easy to jump into the tutorial to tackle the actual gameplay. But it all takes some time getting used to everything. I wish I could full screen the game because I kept clicking out of the window.

Additionally, I wish that the shapes had a little more to them. I wish the enemy cubes were like a triangle that stayed pointed at you. Something about being able to tell where they're aiming to fire would help make the game easier.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! Those are some valid points.

I really love the dashing, and syncing up with enemy attacks to dodge them all also feels really good, the time slow when you have a full parry bar is also great and a useful mechanic. The only thing I could say is maybe allowing parries right after dashes? since I think there's a delay (or maybe I'm just bad).

Other than that, it's simple and fun, and feels great to play, really good for a first jam submission (at least you got it submitted on time, unlike a certain person lol).

Yo, thanks for checking it out! In this build parrying isn’t available while dashing, the character needs to be stationary to attack and to parry. Parrying immediately after dashing was too overpowered before I implemented the bar, so I disabled it. Only now do I realize that after limiting parry usage, I forgot to re-enable it. That’s a very on-point suggestion!

This game is like 100% juice.  The slash animation is very satisfying.  Having to stand next to an enemy to slash them when they can shoot you point blank makes this feel more like a rhythm game than a game about dodging.

Well done! good music, amazing tutorial, clean menu. The game itself is super challenging but gets a little easier with the parry bar full. I love it!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! I like the concept of clicking to dash, and the visual effects add some nice polish. Well done!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, everything is so simple, clean, and slick! It all works together so well!

I unfortunately hit the softlock during the tutorial, but was able to get past it after reloading. I wasn’t very good at the main game, but I could easily see myself grinding at it to get better.

Simple but on target visuals, great controls and cool concept. Good job!

hey! i'm really hoping to play your game, but i have an error when i try to run it in the browser, have you happened to see if this happens to you or anyone else? could just be a me issue but wanted to clarify here first

the error states:

Error: Couldn't load project data at path "/". Is the .pck file missing?

Developer

Hi, in my case it works. I tested it now on firefox and google chrome using 2 windows devices it seems to run fine. This is the first time I see this issue mentioned :/

I think the problem might be that your browser is having trouble with fetching the index.pck when launching the game. Not sure how it can be fixed tho

Developer

Hey again, thanks to a friend I’ve now confirmed that it works on macOS, so a different operating system should be fine. Something may actually be going on on your end. For now, I can only recommend trying out different browsers and see if it solves the issue.

Deceptively difficult! I got up to 39 seconds. I think the lack of visual range for moving and attacking can be a bit frustrating but not a huge deal.

This is probably my favorite game I've played with the "slick as cool mechanics" theme. Like, adding dodging, parrying, and samurai split-in-half slashes to a game is slick, but making a game where they're the only things you can do? That's like, pure, distilled slickness! The core loop is fun and challenging! I had it happen a couple times, though, where the slowdown for a parry canceled my dash, and I died because I was expecting to just dash through the bullet instead of parrying it. Overall, though, this game is awesome! I got to around 35 seconds.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words and the helpful feedback. Glad you liked it! I’ll look into the bug you mentioned, I haven’t encountered anything like that before 🧐

Submitted(+1)

Yo, dodging and slashing is very cool

I suck at it, but that's probably due to my age

It feels good to dodge and go for the kill

A very original and slick entry :)

Submitted(+1)

fuuuuuun, smooooth, sliiiiiick. i was a little confused about the max distance of dashing but i got used to it i think, its quite difficult, but really satisfying when you are in the flow. great entry.

Submitted(+1)

I wish the BPM of the music synced up with the interval enemies attacked! That would be my only change!

Submitted(+1)

Very slick dodging, but very challenging learning curve
