Cool entry! A little dense for my tastes, but very vibey, with arresting visuals. The rival cults bit is the best, in my opinion. Tough luck pulling Metal Slader Glory and the pre-Mario-fied Super Mario Bros. 2, but I think you did a good job making it work.
Looks amazing with the retro vibes, cool adventure idea that incorporates the inspirations well with a little bit of an eerie start, and it reads very crisp and usable even though you fit in a tone of rooms. Awesome work
I'm already loving the two rival cults forming over this same found object. Interesting. Great job combining the 3 games, especially the slader one that didn't give you much. I like your use of color and the maps and descriptions are wonderful, the teleportation to serve as gladiators is intriguing. Fun adventure. I like it very much!
Video Review
Love how detailed Mudsbury is the special carousing table make it feel very lived in! With how densely placed the map locations are for the moon base, having some map cutouts throughout would be helpful, but with the page restriction that would have been tough. I really like the back cover, if this was in print at a shop and I read that it would pull me in 100%! You are also braver than I for going with the citrus colors, I also noticed that while researching retro magazines but couldn't bring myself to use them! The vibes are strong!
Thanks very much. I would love to redo my design with inset maps (and fewer words, if I could ever figure out how to edit myself).
Haha, yeah, those citrus colors... Wild. Needless to say, I like your entry's color scheme much better!
Cool premise. Starts strong. Some of the inconsistencies in the layout organization make it difficult to run as is. You definitely have to read and figure everything out before running. Lots of logical inconsistencies as well. Tables bolted down because of lack of gravity, but game sets can float about. Noisy kitchen, room next to it is completely silent somehow. Lots of combat, not as many puzzles or traps. Inconsistent DCs throughout make it hard to determine what level is best for this adventure.
The premise and vibe really made me think of the first (I think?) Star Ocean game. Really dialed in on those vibes and everything looks really great. The layout with the monsters' art as part of the stat blocks was an awesome idea.
"The box art, which features three completely generic-looking anime characters, was no help. Nor was the title. (What on earth is a “slader”?) "
that is the funniest bit in the inspo page I've ever read lol
You're so lucky to get Nightshade.
This is the first adventure jam I read that has a village. I'm a sucker for that. I just love a good town. Now..the page with buttons and command prompts. Bravo. Going above and beyond.
If I gotta make a shit sandwich here, I just don't like your choice of typefaces. From a graphic design stand point the typeface is too heavy and the leading needs to be increased. there is no, as we call it, " typographic grey." (eg: your BOLD is heavier than your Headings .. doesn't flow downwards in hierarchy) But, as in the modules of old...they basically had the same issues so maybe you intentionally did that.
in the end,
I'd add this one to my travel RPG kit, easily...because town...and pixel monsters NPCS!
Ah, a true Nightshade fan! Thanks so much--I'm glad the village section works for you. And I *really* appreciate the design/typeface feedback. I am no designer, so this is truly helpful. I'd never have recognized that visual clash if you hadn't pointed it out. (So, spoiler alert, it wasn't intentional. Good learning opportunity, though!)
Really liked the moon science fantasy feel, and the low gravity jumping mechanics were a great detail. I know it wasn’t one of the games but the map really reminded me of marble madness.
Overall, a cool little adventure. Thanks for sharing!
