pre-jam devlog (optional)
Hey all! So I am officially joining this jam after starting developpement on jan 9th. The game is called Save Our Queen, and it’s about saving the Queen’s Tower from an army of monsters

I've been playing a lot of incremental games lately (like Digseum or Feed the Black Hole), and while I love them, I wanted to add a little twist to the genre since they can feel a bit same-y.

The Idea: Instead of the usual flat design or purely time-based runs, I wanted more active gameplay. I decided to make it a "protect the base" run. It felt way more engaging to watch the survival timer go up while trying to reach a goal rather than just watching numbers climb. I also wanted to add active abilities that you trigger yourself, mixing that idle feel with some actual strategy.

Post-Jam Devlog | Post-Mortem (optional)
All in all, I’m really proud of how my game turned out! I've never really done a game jam this long before, and honestly, it felt good making a longer version. It gave me the time to actually complete all the gameplay features I wanted without rushing.

The Good:

No Burnout: Surprisingly, I didn't feel burnt out at all. It was genuinely fun playing and developing the game every day.

The Code: I'm really happy with the architecture. The Skill Tree system is dynamic, which makes adding new skills relatively easy. The enemy movement is also modular and scales well, which is great for future updates.

The Bad / Lessons Learned:

UI Time Sink: Looking back, I definitely could've spent a bit less time making the Skill Tree look nice. I spent way too much time redesigning the visuals and lost time that I could've spent on general polish.

Overall, a great experience!

I think the only problem I faced was the health bars being too small. I had to sadly squint my eyes to see them. Other than that, I felt the game was really cute.

A solid entry of the genre. The only problems I have with this game are some UI stuff (it's hard to read skill tree's line color, you don't see visual feedback if you try to attach a new skill to the skill slot and other things like that). But it's only because this is a game jam version, so it's not actually a big deal. The game is fun and addicting, that's the most important part for now.

this is awesome! I did not expect putting so mutch time in a jam game, I max out every update and played till my browser crashed because there where to many units on the screen :D

The Idea is really simple and with the active part (aiming) it is really engaging. I also like that in the beginning it is way to hard so you die after few seconds, but get enouth money to buy updates and try again. I think that whats keept me hooked.

Few things I would suggest:

  • make the icons in the upgrade window bigger, they feel a little bit los
  • use the same pixel per unit in all your assets, some pixels are smaller some bigger.
  • better UI for timer and the quest text ("survive X"), they where not notable for me while playing
  • The UI font is fine but not suited for smaller text, maby use a alternative one for smaller text to make it more readable

Otherwise if you add new content will definitly play it again! amazing work! :)

Thanks! I will be looking to add a tutorial wave for the next update! Glad you liked it

Great job! I would make it a little easier in the beginning just because it was not fun to lose as quickly and do almost nothing. But once upgrades got rolling, it was a blast.

This was fun, an interesting take on tower defense. My only feedback would be to have an introductory wave which is easily defeated to get the player hooked.

So this was fun! I definitely enjoyed the activatable ability mechanic, I think it adds something new to the incremental tower defense type game. I also enjoyed how easy it was to get powerful, usually very grindy skill trees bum me out. So well done, this is a solid base. My only feedback is there needs to be some more visual clarity. I only saw towards the end that there was a target amount of time to survive. Some of the sprites look more clear and crisp than others. And the boss could blend into the mob sometimes when they teleport. Very well done though, I had fun!

Very fun and addicting. I beat the boss, too! I liked it, I feel like you could expand the idea further :D Good job!!

Very fun! I feel like the starting point might be a bit too weak, but great work overall!
