How does the game fit the theme?
The best place to enjoy a strange world is through a good book. Stories are the gateways to adventure. Through the Book Door brings a little bit of that to life by letting you explore small scenes from three amazing books. Meet the characters, see part of their strange worlds, and enjoy a good story.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
About 9 SFX for various sounds were not made during the jam.

The music was arranged during the jam but composed over a hundred years ago.

a few small utility scripts, such as an audio manager and a procedural music player that has been demoted to making noises when the player walks.

This is a rarely seen artstyle in a jam. Already huge kudos for that. The whole idea of going into different books and fighting there is really cool. Gameplay-wise, it's an interesting blend of real-time action and turn-based strategy, and I think it's a cool concept. It felt a bit weird seeing the enemies move even when you are pressing the cancel button, though. But I think this is a nice attempt and good job making the game!

Other things I like:

  • Three different environments to play with
  • A boss battle versus Captain Hook
  • Even the UI buttons are hand-drawn

Suggestions:

  • I think the heal action took too much time, and it felt pointless to use right now. Shortening it a bit would be nice
  • All buttons should be visible and should not require scrolling to see. It took me off guard when the move button was missing suddenly during the boss fight
  • Though the artwork is nice, it would need a bit more separation between scenery and character/objects. This is especially true during the Sherlock sequence, where I don't even know that grey blob is Sherlock until he moves!

Great game! Really enjoyed the gameplay and the concept. Don’t hesitate to rate my game too!

I couldn't agree more! (b ᵔ▽ᵔ)b

I love that you had children's artworks for the game. It makes the game playful and fun!

I thought I could get away by just firing slingshot, but I was wrong. I really had to think about my next move. Awesome job to everyone involved!

Props to the artists!

It's very cute. Plays really well too! I think the mechanics are well implemented. Enjoyed this one.

nice one! I like your art ^^

I liked the idea of turn based combat with realtime consequences. But i missed an abitlity to predict enemies, to shoot sligshot to where enemy WILL be. Not sure if its intentional and if so can you, please, explain why if you have some spare time!

This is fantastic! I love the library, entering books, handrawn art by your kids.

Unfortunately, the game froze after I chose a combat move, even after waiting for a minute--or maybe I didn't do it right. In any case, it's one of the neatest games I've encountered in this jam!

I love the idea of creating this as a family project, that’s awesome.

Turn-based combat like this feels fresh in a jam setting.
Having all enemies move simultaneously with the player’s action gives it a nice sense of flow.
Great work!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on our game as well if you get the chance.

Aw man, making this with your kids is such a cool thing to do. The hand-drawn sprites gave it lots of charm. The title screen with the characters walking by was really fun to see too, made everything feel alive. Liked the little walk animations in-game as well.

The storybook theme is really wholesome approach to the theme. Jumping into different books as a world is just a great fun idea, especially for a family project. The turn-based combat is neat too, though I did run into a couple of moments where it felt a bit buggy. Nothing major, just figured I'd mention it in case you're polishing further.

This must have been such a fun project to make together. Really sweet entry.

The art creates such an interesting environment and perspective for a game! How sweet. This is the first turn-based game I've played in the jam so it was very refreshing and fun! Absolutely fits the theme, well done team!

Developer

Thank you so much and I am honored to be the first turn based game you encountered in this jam!

Something to add more contrast between the characters and items and the background would have helped make things clearer visually, but really cute idea to have make a game like this with you kids' art and kudos for making a turn/grid based game in just a week. The whole team should be really proud of what you made!

Developer

Thank you so much, that means a lot!

And I agree, in the future I'm going to add outlines to make everything more defined. For this one I was keeping it as close to the original as possible but I see now that the levels could benefit from some contrast. Thank you again for your kind words and feedback!

So cool! I loved the art and this idea of telling stories through a kids' art and eyes. The combat system was also innovative and unusual for a game jam, albeit a little buggy.

Also, missed opportunity to rename Holmes' melee attack "discombobulate?" ;D

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind feedback! I do wish I had more time to work out some of the enemy issues, but I'm glad you were able to enjoy it. And lol! I love that idea!

What a charming idea to have the art be your kids art that super awesome!

Thank you so much for playing!

Really unique and cool game, had fun playing through the different stories, really liked the combat system! Somehow it didn't run for me in Chrome though, but luckily in Edge worked for me.

Thank you so much for checking it out and for taking the time to try it out on a different browser! I'm glad it worked in the end :)

Very cute game. I liked the turn based combat. Unfortunately, in the last level, my turn was not ending so I was just beat up by the captain :D

The indicator for selector enemies was not so visible though.

Good job :)

Developer

That last level seemed to have a mind of its own, so sorry about that! Thank you for the feedback! Much appreciated.

This was such a creative idea and the art style gives it so much heart and personality. The combat system was surprisingly deep and fun to figure out, and the whole experience just feels genuine and full of charm. Check out my hand drawn game as well :)

Wow, this is the most unusual game I've ever played! It looks very nice. Unusual combat mechanics.

Developer

Thank you! I tried to think out of the box for this one :)

Very cute! Assuming you made this with your kids? I'm sure they had a great time seeing their art come to life.

Developer

Yes, my kids were the art team for this jam! They were so enthralled when they saw all their art in the game. In testing they kept saying "OMG I made that!!" it felt great to see them so proud of their work!! Thank you!
