Interesting game, I made it to the end of the maze.
But I didn't quite understand how best to use the chain.
Still, the idea of sliding along it is pretty cool.
Unique and interesting idea! I liked the setting and innovative game mechanics. I think I encountered a bug where the stake did not work as expected. Good job on trying something very new.
Great maze game! Made it to freedom with a very convoluted path so riding the chain back to the start was a fun experience.
Not sure I was interacting with the chain properly. It feels like you are supposed to explore possible dead-ends and dangerous places without the chain but then you end up walking the correct path and dangerous places 3 times so I ended up just carrying the stake the whole time and memorised the rough map layout in my head. I think chain-death being more punishing would solve this (new map layout) but I don't think that would be as fun.
Great looking game too, I really like the light and shadow effects.
Awesome art in this! Really sweet style and mood you've cultivated here, felt really nice to play and control the character too
Yo nice game! The chain surfin is a awesome mechanic! should be in every adventure game from now on :)
Really nice concept and graphics
My first playthrough was bugged, I didn't get damaged by traps
Restarted the game and the bug was gone
In both playthroughs, I can leave the map at the bottom of the start location and at the top of the end location
Sorry to hear about the bug, but thanks for sticking with it and reloading! There’s definitely some optimization that we didn’t quite get around to.
We can call leaving the map at the start a little Easter egg :)
Wow this was great. I loved the art and the chain mechanic was unique. Although I think fundamentally it doesn't make that much sense, since there's not really any risk to placing the "spawnpoint" down. I would always take 2 hits and then place it and kill myself to get back with full health. There should be some risk to it. However sliding back on it was cool enough to make up for everything.
Glad you enjoyed the chain! There’s definitely some tweaking to be done on its functionality. In theory, it should present the player with the choice between “is this far enough to stake it down, or should I risk going further?” In practice, you can cheese the mechanic a bit :) thanks for playing!
Dude, I love the art style. Is it pre-rendered?
I feel like Chainlight has a really unique main feature; it was fun surfing along the chains and satisfying to learn the patterns of the flame turrets and stuff.
I explored for like half an hour but didn't manage to find the goal, unfortunately. Great game, guys :)
I appreciate it! It’s a mix of 2D rendering, and pre-rendered sprite sheets. Quick explanation is that all the object start in 3D (so we can render normal maps) and then I’ve rendered out a view in the isometric camera angle. I then use the 3D render as reference to hand paint the 2D texture that you see in game. So everything is pre rendered, but has normal maps attached to the 2D sprites for light/shadow in game. The character animations are all sprite sheets, but no normal maps for the character. Good spot, and let me know if you want more of a breakdown on the art, I’m happy to share.
I loved the art style, and being able to physically set down your save point is an interesting concept. Nice job!
