Very impressive for a solo dev submission!
It felt hard to progress without really engaging into the gameplay. I guess That's a me thing. I'm not in tryhard mood today. But honestly I'm struggling to give suggestions. It's as good as it gets in this style so congratulations I guess.
Very well done again.
cheers
Oooh i like the new cover image!
thanks!
Its impressive what you managed to accomplish in the span of a week! It feels polished, deep & thought through. The pixel art is lovely and the music blends well (maybe small comment: I struggled a bit with reading the font from time to time ; it does have a great pixel-vibe but to the detriment of legibility).
I did struggle to progress in the game ; not sure if its a balance thing around the #and types of cards in the original hand, or that you run out of options a little too fast? (might also just be me being bad at it) But I can see how with more playtesting & balancing this can become a great game!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) Yes the font makes many sacrifices in order to achieve the pixel look. This is something I plan to update post jam. As for balance, this will definitely need lots of more work. I have several new ideas and ways to balance without running out of options. I appreciate you taking the time to play it!
I enjoyed this game a lot! The visuals and UI are charming and very well done. The game is easy to understand, but I could definitely see how someone who's a lot better at managing their cards than me could go much further. Excellent incorporation of the theme, and great job.
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great design, interesting take on a card game! I felt a little frustrated when running out of options. Maybe because the game ends very abruptly? I think a few more cards in the base hand size could be useful? Graphics and sound are excellent.
Thanks for checking it out! Yes, the hand size and hand management was probably the number 1 most challenging thing in terms of balancing when making it. Originally, I had it just draw a card every turn but that removed any planning at all. Then it went to only the location rewards gave cards, but that made it too hard to draw and I was never making it past like 7 or so tiles. Then I came up with the adjacency thing which turned the game from more of a card game rogue like to a bit of a puzzle game. The game does end super abruptly, that's something that I will update post jam. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Tutorial in my jam game and also hexagonal terrains ??!! Sign me up.
And l love the art on the tiles. The BGM is smoothing and cozy as well.
So the card is to connect the tiles as long as you can go. It is not super obvious to me at first but more I play I feel like this is quite fun. All the terrain cards are beautiful as well.
thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed it :) I had hoped to make a much more in depth tutorial but ran out of time. I’ve got an update with that added that I’ll post when the jam is over.
Huge fan of the art and sound effects. The little twinkle when picking things up was the definition of dopamine.
I’m glad you liked it! I spent a few hours just scrolling through snap and click sound effects looking for the perfect one lol
This is very fitting to the theme of the jam in my opinion! As others mentioned, I believe it is very sophisticated to create something like that, reminds me a lot of Dorfromantik. The tutorial was also great and necessary to understand what to do. Great job.
thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it :) that’s funny, a few people have compared it to Dorfromantik, including one of my play testers. I did try to really incorporate the theme into the gameplay itself, I’m glad that resonated well with you
This is a very well polished and thought out experience.
Creating a puzzle game like this is always impressive because balancing can be really difficult. It took me awhile but I was able to hit 33 tiles on my last play through, it never felt completely impossible and being able to see your deck in advance really helps strategize.
Perfectly adheres to the journey theme as it brings across a feeling of exploration.
Honestly can't think of too much to criticize, I think it would help to add a marker to where you are currently, as sometimes I would go deep into thought looking at my deck and hand then back at the screen and forgot exactly which tile I was on until I clicked on a card to open the movement selection. Maybe a little explorer guy or something as that would help thematically(since this kinda has the vibe of Civ where when you are sending a scout out.)
It didn't happen often but sometimes I strayed too far up and it was hard for me to see the tiles below, so being able to move the map would be useful when someone wants to plan a route.
Overall this has been the stand out of the Jam so far, nice work.
wow, thanks for the high praise! I did spend a lot of time on polishing it. I chose to sacrifice a few other common things like custom animations in order to get what I already had as polished as I could. I have been and plan to keep working on this and both seeing where you are, and moving the map are on my todo list. Thanks for playing and commenting!
I played a couple of playthroughs and kept losing but still had fun! next time I'll try to plan ahead a bit more. I really like the design choice of having map building/placement as strategic deckbuilding game. the art style is super nice and the game is very atmospheric in general. thanks for uploading, and good job!
Thanks so much for the kind words! It is definitely tricky and could do for some more balancing. I’ll keep working on the game and update it soon after the jam ends. Thanks for playing and commenting!
This one was a ton of fun. I agree with littleAdler that this could be an enjoyable mobile game, especially if you add some more juice to placing tiles and the encounters.
Thanks! I really glad you enjoyed it :) I do plan on working on it more and will push out an update soon after voting ends.
This is a delightfully nuanced take on the jam's theme. The gameplay is intricate, yet elegant in it's presentation. Also, the tutorial is a nice touch. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it but the tutorial could have been much more in depth. I wish I had the time to make more of a guided walkthrough instead but had to cut down to essentially an overlayed slideshow lol. I have made a much more comprehensive version already and plan to update it soon after voting ends.
I really enjoyed this game! The pixel art is wonderful, the sound effects and music create a great atmosphere, and I found the gameplay both intuitive and relaxing. If you decide to expand on this in the future (which I believe you should) I think this would make a fantastic mobile game. I can definitely see myself pulling this up on my phone and playing for a few minutes to pass the time. Just my 2 cents though, well done!
Wow, thanks so much for the kind words! I'm glad you liked the sound effects, I spent several hours just listening to different snap and click sounds, looking for the perfect one lol. I do plan on developing it further, I have already added a few things and will update it soon after voting ends. It actually works on mobile already but its a little odd to play. Thanks for taking the time to play and review it :)
Such an in depth game! I think this is an idea that could go really far with a little extra work post jam! quite impressive! Really lovely art too
Thanks! I actually have been working on it already over the past few days. I've made a much more comprehensive tutorial so far. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I adore the artstyle and complexity of this game. It took me couple of tries to get the rules but after that it was smooth sailing. I think it is a great fit for this jam's theme.
Thanks! The tiles art went through a couple iterations before landing on where they are. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
It’s really polish and more fun than i though it would be. The most i manage was 22 tiles, and i like that you can only place from the last tiles. It feel like you are exploring and shaping the world and make it even more relate to the theme.
I don’t know if it’s just me but sometime it seems the bonus we get is swap from what the card say. Sometimes it say i should get backpack bonus on the tile, but got sword instead. Or i probably miss somethings and there a percentage for both to appear.
It was a satisfying game congrats, the audio and visual pair really well together
Thanks for playing it and for the kind words! Yes I sacrificed a few things to just continue to polish what I already had. Like I didn't even make animations for this one. I had hoped to give each tile a unique placement animation, like birds flying out of the forest, rocks tumbling down the mountain, but I cut that so I could polish everything else. Interesting about the bonus. If you are talking about the encounters on the terrain, its just a chance to get either one except for the plains and forest which predetermined. All the terrains tell you percentage of the most likely encounter type above the cards tool tip. It's kind of hard to spot since that was a later addition based on play testers feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I was indeed talking about those encounter. Now that you said it t make sense, i did see the percentage but i guess i can just blame my luck because on some run i did, i got the other option almost everytime XD Not having animation wasn’t that big of a deal because the gameplay feel polished and didn’t really need more to bring charm to it. Even tho you description of animation are really tempting
Beatiful game and very a well polished experience. Although I never played Carcassone, I had much fun with this, so I might try it one day.
Some notes that I took:
Followed you to keep an eye out for future releases. :)
Wow! Thanks for the high praise! I'm glad you liked the tutorial but also a little surprised, it seems like most people have found the game to be quite complex even with the tutorial. I wanted to do more of a guided walkthrough instead of a "here is what everything does" but I didn't have the time, so the tutorial is a little duct tape and glue. I ended making the guided mode within the 5-6 hours after the deadline, so when the jam ends I will push out a patch with that for any future players. I'm glad you enjoyed the UI! It's my first time trying UI, all my past games have just been platformers. The font is always hard at this small of a scale. I used the Google Tiny5 font since it's the only one I can find that scales down to this size. I agree though, it makes some sacrifices to achieve that and is hard to read sometimes. Thanks for playing and the feedback!
Absolutely delightful! I followed your development on the jam server, and I wasn't disappointed when I finally tested the game.
Artistically, the game is impeccable; I'm fascinated by hexes, and the combination of your pixel art and sound design works very well!
In terms of mechanics, I'd say the game is a little difficult to grasp at first. I needed to play two full games and the tutorial before I felt I truly understood what I was doing. Even so, the most I got was 14 tiles.
But I don't think that's a problem; it's more about the type of game you were aiming to make.
Overall, congratulations on your entry; I think you nailed the theme ☺️
Thanks for playing and your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it and that it lived up to your expectations :) It is difficult and the learning curve is steep. I wish I had the time to make more of a guided walkthrough instead of the tutorial but I just didn't have the time. I ended making something like that after the submission time and will update the game after voting ends.
This game has such mechanical depth for a jam game! The learning curve was pretty steep, but once I got the hang of it, it was really engaging.
As far as I can tell, it gives you the same tiles, in the same order, until you play something that shuffles the deck. That's a little confusing. It looks like a deck-builder, but it plays more like a designed puzzle game.
I did eventually beat it, which was very satisfying. Overall, this is a very impressive game!
I'm glad you enjoyed it and took the time to beat it :) Yes the first hand and following 7 or so cards are scripted. Originally it was all random but it lead to many runs being impossible after the first few cards or just immediately. I set it up it up in a way so that it gives you 1 of each card in order to kick you off, then after that its all RNG. In the future, I'd like it to be totally random but that would need a lot more balancing and time in designing card and their rewards.
Really like the look and feel of this game. It feels polished, the atmosphere is great, and placing the tiles has a nice satisfying click. Its also fairly complex but the tutorial is really well done in introducing concepts slowly.
Might be a little too hard, I tried a few times but couldn't get any further than around 15 tiles placed - my draw was too low and I kept running out of tiles to place. Had fun while trying though.
Thanks for playing it! I'm glad you liked the click sound of the tiles, I wanted it to feel very responsive. It is rather complex but I am glad you found the tutorial helpful :) I've gotten mixed feedback on the level of difficulty and if its too hard.
