Hi ardleon,

Not sure if you checked your email, but you should have received one from itch/our jam. We have some prizes available for the jam participants, so make sure to claim a game key if you’d like one.

Developer

Hi Patricia, thank you so much for letting me know. No, I haven't received any emails, not even in my spam folder.

What should I do?

Jam HostSubmitted(+1)

Reach out to us on discord or at gamesforblindgamersjam@gmail.com so we can send it to you!

This was a pleasing experience! It got me to chuckle a few times, and it had a nice pacing. I like the way you share some lines and then let us continue - even if we’re not making a decision, we still get to savour what just happened and have a feeling that we have some agency. That is good, and avoid getting us bored or overwhelmed with information. I was able to read back when I didn’t understand a wrd or two.

The music is nice for settings the mood for a silly medieval setting; I wish this could have been done by a talented musician. You know, you can find some in our discord community.

I am also curious about the TTS voice you used. It has a nice accent and intonation. Mind sharing the source?

And lastly I will also say that it’s not always clear who’s talking. I felt at some moments that was me, but others it was someone else? I didn’t realize if I was Lyndor or Lyndor’s friend. This was not always clear. I wonder if you could identify the speaker, or maybe, since you’re making use of TTS, provide different TTS voices for different characters - although this could get out of hand quickly, once you start adding more characters… well, I’m not sure what the solution is, but it was a fun time.

Developer

Thanks for your kind words :-)

And indeed, I have a task to organize texts to make it clearer who is speaking; it doesn't always happen that way. As for the TTS voices, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. They're the ones provided by the browser's API, and they're not always the same. Depending on the computer I'm testing on, it might be a boy or a girl. I don't really understand why; I'll have to look into it.

Jam HostSubmitted

No, it was a silly question, don’t mind it. I was just wondering if it would even be possible to say “use voice english-UK for this sentence, voice english-US for this one, and voice english-aus for that one”, but it was only a delirium of my mind. I don’t agree with this idea, no one is gonna have all those voices in their computers, and you would have too many characters to make that work. Don’t mind that bit of the comment!

Developer

This is something I need to look into because I think it could be done. I'm not sure, as I said, I need to see it, but I think you can use any of the available voices you want. This is a whole new world I've discovered thanks to this jam session. We'll see what the future holds...

I love this type of story games. Hilarius tale indeed! Also very noslagic, for some reason, because of the shoe paranoia, I remember an anime I watch as a child, about a world where people with hair on the head were hunted, and balds rule the world. Hahaha thank you for make me refresh that memory. Good work!

Developer(+1)

That's great about the bald guys :-D

Submitted

What a great unique and whimsical concept! I love the world you have created and thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. My stomach hurts so much from laughing with all the fun I had.

Submitted

Not sure if you have tested with VoiceOver on Mac OS X, but it looks like your document language was set to `es`, which uses a spanish voice when possible, making the content difficult to understand (because it assumes that it is in spanish).

Developer (1 edit)

That's right, I missed that detail, thanks for pointing it out :-)

It should be fixed now, but I'll try testing my project with VoiceOver again to see if I can figure out how it works.

I just got to say, you have done a fantastic job. I couldn't stop laughing at the absurdly good writing for dialogue and the options were really great. I absolutely love this and i just want more. You have done a fantastic work. The concept is truly geniusly done and the humor is on point, i couldn't stop laughing as i heard the dialogue. The text was read automatically with spoken voice and i really liked that, i had some hickup getting the options to get registered by just pressing number keys 1, 2 and 3 at first, but it worked afterward. COngrats on such a absolutely wicked and fun experience.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much. Regarding the keyboard issue it's possible you lost focus at some point. I'll make a note of that so that when this happens the game will go into "pause" mode.

HostSubmitted(+1)

Okay I gotta know, why in the picture does he have nipples on his shirt? (Also don't forget to have alt text if your images is conveying something silly like that!)

Developer

I hadn't looked closely enough at the image :-D

Thanks for pointing out the "alt" attribute for the image.

HostSubmitted

Oh where'd you get the image from? It's a weird picture but looks custom, so don't forget to credit your team!

Developer (1 edit)

It's the work of an AI (I don't remember which one; I used several at the time). Unfortunately, I can't handle the visual aspect, and the few people I know who could do it are, well, the usual: family, work, etc. It's a complicated matter, to be honest. I first tried using free image banks, but that approach is even worse. Finding something that perfectly matches what you're doing or have in mind when it's a personal project is difficult. What I will do based on your comment is edit it myself at some point.

Now that I'm writing this, I'm wondering if I should warn people about it. I know some people are very reluctant to accept AI-generated content.

By the way, just in case anyone gets the wrong idea, this is the only work in my project done with an AI, along with the music, although it's actually mine. It all started with a whistle I recorded, and an AI orchestrated it. :-)

HostSubmitted

Ahh okay, if that's the case don't forget on the publishing of it to mark the "Has AI content" Since that wasn't checked I assumed it wasn't.
Ai is allowed to help devs with accessibility issues, and if image is only thing then that's probably fine since that isn't actually in the game. If you want help to replace them do feel free to stop by the discord and we'll be happy to help! Thanks for entry!

Developer

I would love that help, but I see a small "problem," and that is that the style would have to be consistent throughout the entire game. I mean, when I do it (if this is ever possible, as I said, it doesn't depend on me), everything would have to have a unique style. This is the biggest problem: getting it to always be the same character, the same drawing style, etc... although, well, since I have a lot to write at the moment, I think the visual aspect can wait a little longer. What I will do in the short term is make a theme for the interface.

Developer

Okay, now Lyndor doesn't have nipples, and I also removed his abs :-D

HostSubmitted

Haha I mean if they were meant to be there to be silly I wasn't gonna question it!

Then someone reported about the music being AI since our rules say no using things made by proc gen. We don't say no letting proc gen help at all, since with how baked in AI is to everything that'd ban using google at this point.  So can you clarify how much proc gen helped with the music just to make my life easier?

Or if you can replace the music that might just be easier as that way folks can focus on your writing and the feedback is on your game instead of AI nonsense.

Developer (1 edit)

The music is mine (I've been playing guitar since 1986), the only thing the AI did was provide me with musicians (for free) to perform the original idea, this is great from my point of view, they have come to help the creators...for now, later when the time comes they will rebel and try to finish us off, etc, etc.

HostSubmitted

Oh okay! So it just took your whistling and built vocals?

Sorry for confusion! People are jumpy at the word AI.

Developer

Exactly, that's how it was.

On the other hand, I understand the apprehension, but I think this issue is sometimes exaggerated. They're just another tool; for example, as a programmer, I haven't written code in about two years now, I just review it.

HostSubmitted

I mean it was the request of the community by an overwhelming amount for us to put in this rule:

6. NoGen AI:To nurture our supportive community and respect the skill and talent of our participants, please avoid using generative AI for creation of assets, including source code. If you need, you may use it to manage accessibility-related barriers (e.g. modifying an inaccessible game engine).

In part to just give people a break from being expected to use AI, and to give people a break from having to deal with AI gen content. Combined with we want folks to be learning and documenting and innovating! A lot of engines have garbage implementation of accessibility things, and odds of AI coming up with a new solution are rather low. You can absolutely go "Hey I'm trying to do XYZ, what function should I use?", heck even "this is wrong, why?" because its pattern recognition will find that stupid flipped < symbol. Maybe even "I found this addon in another engine to add accessibility to my engine, what is the equivalent syntax for my engine?"

but having it write code I don't trust at all still at my job, since you mentioned you didn't use AI except for the music I'm assuming you meant programming at work though and did all programming here!

Sorry for bother, I was confused by the nipples, which led to confusion about music. If you have any questions or concerns do feel free to message me on discord so we don't spam up your comments with this weirdness!

Nice start. I look forward to seeing progress and trying the free roam.

Short interactive story (but not a lot of agency). The story is very fun!!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comment, and yes, the prologue is quite linear, but at the time I thought it was a good idea to do it that way. It's a way to introduce three important characters in the story. As I explain at the end, from this point on there's an inventory, an action menu, and a map to change locations, which will change the game mechanics and make decisions start to carry real weight, although this is already happening "invisibly" in the prologue.

Submitted(+1)

I liked the story, so I played all the possibilities hehehe. It’s a great submission. If you continue, it would be fantastic.

Jam HostSubmitted (3 edits) (+1)

Nice submission!

Is this a custom HTML engine of yours? I poked through the code a bit, and that seemed like the case. That’s very cool to me!

The text-to-speech was too slow for my liking. I would recommend adding a way to adjust the rate of the speech utterances.

So that led me to trying it with NVDA. It’s usable, but there are some issues that could probably be resolved with an afternoon of testing. The main issue is that updates to the text aren’t read aloud. You need to tab back to the speech toggle, and then read the text line-by-line with the arrow keys. I would recommend making the .scene__text region focusable with tabindex="0" and .focus() it when its contents are changed, or try using aria-live="polite" on it.

The actual story itself? I got distracted writing this, and should report back later.

Jam HostSubmitted

It’s good! I loved the premise, and the interaction with the guard got a few laughs out of me. I would have loved to see how the engine handles movement between areas of the city, perhaps with more consequential choices hidden up your sleeve.

Developer

There will be a button that opens a list of available locations; by selecting one, we "teleport".

Developer(+1)

Thanks, your recommendations are right on my "endless" to-do list, and yes, it's my own framework.

Quite fun and quirky so far! I like the writing and music. Do you plan to add voice acting in the future, to bring the writing to life?

Developer(+1)

Of course, that would be theirs; for now I've used TTS because finding people who work for the love of it is complicated, although adding TTS has been a good move in other respects.

Submitted(+1)

End of prologue?! I need to know the rest of the story! I love the story, I need more!

Submitted

Fun story so far! I do notice the screen reader does not know how to pronounce some of the writing, such as dialect contractions and noises like "Mmmm". A minor thing, it's still understandable.

One other thing I noticed is that after the screen reader is done reading choices, it never speaks again on new texts. I have to choose options before the screen reader is done talking otherwise it stops!

Great job submitting a game, hope you keep working on it!

Developer

Thank you so much for your kind words; they really help me continue with my project :-) On another note, I'll try what you suggested with a screen reader. I didn't get around to doing this test because it already has TTS reading, so I dismissed it. Even so, I'll look into what might be happening.

Submitted

Oh I see, I did not hear a TTS! So I enabled my screen reader.

Developer

That must be the problem then (the screen reader) because the tests I do with the integrated TTS work fine, by the way the only place where there is no TTS is on the input screen, so for whatever reason I thought it was good that it was like that and that the voice starts when pressing "Start/Continue".

(+1)

This is quite fun, and I want to play more, past the prologue!

Developer

Thank you so much! This is probably the best thing that will happen to me today 🙂
