I liked the sprites art and the idea of the game
Very cool concept, surprisingly deep for a short jam.
Ok, very fun, took me 2 tries and... I technically didn't beat it. I used a Horse of Theseus strategy where I trained 3 very strong parts by swapping them between 2 horses. I also prioritized training learning early. So by day 19, I had the perfect horse with super high stats, plus the ability to teleport. I CLEARED the final race by a mile. No contest. But it only rewarded me $44 for first place !!!! So I didn't earn enough to feed mom for the last day (I ended with $360, I could have beaten a tier 1 or 2 race and won the game). It took me a really long time to get to that point, so I didn't want to do it all over to see the end screen :(
Despite the disappointment with the way my playthrough ended, this game was really fun. Kept me hooked the whole way through, really satisfying progression, and the time limit gives you strong motivation to beat the game. It's a shame there was no music or sound, but considering how much you packed in here it's understandable. Nice work!!!
Thank you so much!
Yeah sorry about the last race only giving that much, that is full on a bug and is meant to give a lot more. Training learn early I think is def the way to go! Horse of Theseus strat is crazy, I didn't think of that. I've been having fun reading how different people played the game.
I am also sad there's no sounds, but I decided like midway to cut out adding sounds since it was mostly only me working on this, and gameplay still had a lot left to add, and I really wanted it to be completed.
I appreciate the comment! ^^
Its sick as hell!!
Really cool concept and presentation. Either I was getting good luck or spamming mutator worked better at getting stats than swaping/training.
it is really impressive for a 3 day jam, well done
really complex for such a short jam.. well done
Art is sooooo good, also feels like duck life 4. Gave 4.25*
It did make me think of duck life haha!
Thank you :)
Honestly, at first I thought the lack of sounds would damage the presentation and game feel, but dude, the game totally makes up for it with unique artstyle, plus the horrific story is just so cool!!
I had so much fun with this game, I spent much more time on it than I planned to. At first I thought it was a neat racing game, then I unlocked all the buildings and found out the game had much more to it than I expected. The whole body part building aspect is a really cool concept, and juggling between what to spend money on, to make sure you have enough money for mother, race entry fee and to buy parts/new horses was fun to manage. Especially with mother's unpredictable needs it felt like I was always kept on my toes.
In the end I made it all the way to day 19 with 7$ to my name, so I knew I couldn't make it to 20, only being able to enter an intermediate race, but I'm happy with how far I made it. I may try again another time to beat it, but I have other horse games to play for now.
As for suggestions for improvement, aside from the obvious like sound, something small but helpful would be some sort of green plus/red minus indicator for each stat when swapping parts to show which are increasing or decreasing, as there are quite a lot of stats so it takes a while to check and compare.
Also, maybe I just got lucky, but whenever mother ate one of my horses she always picked the one at the bottom of my list, which after I figured it out it made the threat not as scary as all I had to do was buy a random new horse and that made the cost equivalent to her food costs being whatever cost that new horse was instead of the cost being me losing one of my horses, if that makes sense. That being said, if it had been a truly random pick that would really increase the game's difficulty as I mainly focused on upgrading one particular horse and if I lost him then I would've been done for. At the same time though I'm also not sure how players would feel having random chance deciding the fate of their run. I suppose it would incentivise having a roster of multiple good horses. I'm not sure if it's something that even needs to be changed, but it's something to think about.
This really means a lot to me ^^
Getting to day 19 is still very far, good job!
I ran out of time for sounds, and I like the plus minus indicator idea. For the random horse thing... you just got lucky haha. A lot of people I've seen try actually got their best horse eaten by mother. It is fully random.
Thank you!
That was dark haha. A lot of fun, couldn´t beat it
This is a really cool concept - it makes me think of duck life as a horror game. I was wondering why you called it Horse Builder at first and then I got to the... horse building? Crazy game. Would've loved some SFX to add the suspense, but otherwise I thought the presentation was great! I love the art style - something about the way the horse limbs move during the race is so uncanny. Great work!
Really like the graphics and presentation of the game.
