Firstly, this actually feels like a SNES game - the graphics are absolutely spot on! Plus, the music is fantastic and fits perfectly with the spooky atmosphere. However, I think some sound effects should have been added (especially with the gun firing), and some further indication so you know when the enemies are taking damage from the bullets. Plus, I couldn't find myself doing much except going through the timeline, fighting the boss and repeating. The music intensifying was a good touch, but I think the difficulty could maybe be ramped up slightly for every loop. I understand your game isn't completely finished but this definitely looks to be a great SNES game once it's fully finished! Keep it up mooon.bit!

The game followed the constraint well and the fact that its a real snes game gets you 5 stars for snes style and sound, my main issue is the lack of polish and how even though the game loops thats all it does. But this game does have the potiential to be a full snes game like mega man or caslevania,I can absolutly see that so keep working at it. :D

mooonbit you've done it again! love the fact that this is a REAL SNES game! ah! fun mechanics, loved pew pewing some zambies! when i went to the far left at the beginning of the game i disappeared off the edge! that was a fun lil bug. also, i was a little sad there wasn't a pew pew sound effect, but for a jam, it is expected that everything is not in place! loved the boss battle, it felt tense, and hard to understand their movements at first, and i enjoyed figuring it out! also, the "you died" screen was creepy and cool!

Super impressed that you've made an actual SNES game! As someone very early in their game dev journey, I can't even begin to imagine making something like this without a modern game engine (let alone in 4 weeks). I read below you had many other plans for this, but I did enjoy what you got done. In particular, the boss fight somehow really gave me a sense of nostalgia for SNES games of old.

Really ambitious of you to try to make it an actual SNES game instead of just in the style of an SNES game. There seemed to be some pretty significant slow-down during the boss fight when playing in the browser, but that reminded me of some actual slow-down when playing on real SNES hardware. I would have liked to have seen a little more depth or mechanics, or something about the stuck-in-a-loop beyond just re-starting when you beat the boss, but this was an interesting play! Well done!

Developer

Thank you for your Review!

Yeah it was ambitious. I needed an excuse to make a SNES game so I could learn more about it. We wanted to make each loop harder, at least for 3 rounds and that you could escape the boss by killing him in a hidden room. Well that actually didn't work out, as I got sick in the last week before the submissions ended so I just couldn't fit everything inside that we wanted... But at least I learned a lot :D Hopefully we will add those things later

It`s a good game! but I find it a little disappointing how the game doesn't change after you beat the doctor, like, you kill him over and over again but nothing changes and it seems you just can't reach a conclusive ending.

Developer

Thank you! Yeah I was really sick for one week and SNES programming is hard so there wasn't enough time but that was the idea haha. Hopefully we will add this after the voting ended

Positives:

+IT'S AN ACTUAL SNES GAME!!!! That's so cool
+I liked the main character's design. All the sprite art overall. This feels like a minigame in a SUDA51 game. Definitely has style.

+The music gave me life. Bopping tune

Suggestions:

>the lack of a sound effects when I shot and hits landed threw me off

>I wish the loop was more than just the music changing. Liek a harder version of the level with new harder enemies and hazards with the same layout or something.

Bugs:

In the browser I noticed some of the wrong sprites loading on the tileset and bullets as the game went on. That's genuine SNES game running through an in-browser emulator for ya though. I'd call that bug a positive

Overall:

Rad as hell! I wish I could make a real SNES game, that's so neat.

Thank you so much for your deep review of the game!

Urigami did an amazing job with the art, somehow he isn't listed in this but he made all the art.

I couldn't add a lot of things because I've got super sick in the last week of development so I had to stop before we could add SFX and a change in the boss-fight-mechanic and adding more enemies.

Yeah there are some visual glitches because handling big spirites on the SNES is pretty difficult actually :/

We'll add some things after the rating is over. Maybe even cut scenes that explain more of the story.

At least, this is cool demo

The look of the game looked great from the submission page, but I was unable to play on Mac, I just got a black screen of death :(

Try to download it, and run through any SNES emulator.

how does it follow "stuck in a loop"?

Developer (1 edit)

After defeating the boss, he rewinds time. The music changes a bit but the fight repeats
