This sure was a interesting experience. I fealt the responses took a bit to load, the way to navigate the interface could have been a bit faster since it took me a bit to get through. Also didn't realize i had to press d key to get to the choices at first. It was a interesting experience i can say that.
Thank you for your feedback!
Can you explain what would have helped you to tackle or avoid these obstacles? It would really help us to improve the game further.
I really enjoyed this game a lot! I found the audio puzzles to be super fun and engaging. Additionally, I really like the story you have going here and wish that there was more to play! I hope you will continue to work on this game as I definitely want more.
Thank you!!
As you wand more we'll have no excuse to deliver more I guess :D
Reading the itch page description, I want to congratulate you for testing with a braille display. This would be something great to offer other game developers in our community, as not every blind person has a braille display to test with - at least the consultants in my team didn’t - so this would make a difference in helping increase braille display support for all games. I invite you to join our discord server and maybe also leave feedback in other games about whether they support this or not (nicely of course). I know I personally would really like to know which other games from the jam do that. Maybe if you don’t wish to comment on their games, you could let me know? I am working on an article about the jam and its submissions, and this would enrich it a lot.
Playing the game, I notice a couple things:
Some positive things I also want to highlight:
I love how this game implements great practices for auditory accessibility, like for deaf and hard of hearing players or anyone struggling with audio - at least for the dialogues; not so clearly for the riddles part. But I want to applaud this, I like the way all dialogue has voice acting alonge with closed captions that describe relevant sounds going on, like “rummaging through bag” and who the speaker is; as well as, of course, the compatibility and accessibility for braille display users.
There is also the detail that the gameplay for the riddles lets us adjust sound channels. And I suppose with that I can say that it also implements a very interesting mechanic. We don’t need to hear everything well in the midst of a noisy environment, because we can adjust each channel. This could be reused or used to adjust sound channels in any game that wants to be more accessible for hard of hearing players.
I am finding the story interesting and fun, and the riddles as well. I unfortunately can’t finish playing right now, but it’s being a pleasant experience. I hope to message again when I have more progress on it!
Unfortunately, my VOD is quite boring this time. I am in energy-saving mode to try to play and rate all games, so I am commenting less out loud. In any case, you can hear me chuckle here and there: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2719716493
Edit: Oh, I was not expecting the story to end so soon! I did like the little stab/hint at how she might be wrong. “I guess I have to believe it, right?”. Maybe it hints at a story that is yet to uncover!
This game is really interesting and challenging in terms of accessibility, as in I wonder how we’d translate this for deaf players (besides ‘skip puzzle’). But that’s me using my accessibility consultant brains. Regardless, this is a creative and cool minigame dynamic that could be used in more games, any game. It’s like an auditory puzzle. I like the creativity, and I like how you presented it. Though I think I’d have like a bit more of a twist and fun in the writing itself, you probably made one of the most accessible games in the jam, and I like that.
Hi! Thank you so much for you're feedback! We were waiting for it like small children on Christmas ^^
Regarding the braille display we have to say, that we were lucky that my university lent us one to test our game. I had the access for like an hour and it was during development. Far away from optimal but we were really greatful for it.
We'll look into the bugs you encountered. If I have the chance (and time) to test the other games with it, I will definitely report on the result, but I am no braille user so my experience is not the experience someone might have who is using the braille display everyday. However I sent the link of the jam to some people I know who are blind and low vision players, so maybe they will feedback on the games as well.
The option not to remap to Enter and Space were bug related though - the game always skipped the dialogue and we couldn't find out why. We think it might be related to the screenreader input keys but we can't really tell. Preventing people from accidentally skipping the game was the best option for now, but we have to find out what is going on there sometime later.
Also I would love to enhance the options for deaf and hard of hearing people - it was a mini mission to make it accessible not only for blind and low vision players so it is nice that somebody noticed that as well! Also I am someone who is very sensitive to audio input (or any "strong" sensory input) so I wish I could adjust the sound around myself like in the game.
Congrats on the great submission here!
I really enjoyed the puzzles here and the controls for changing the different channels. I think this is very unique compared to entries I've seen in the past for this jam, and I thought it was super clever and well done. The voice acting was also great and appreciated.
My only feedback would be that I would have loved some audio feedback (just a short sound or something) when changing audio channels. I think also adding some kind of visual affordance (for sighted / low-vision players) would have been cool (but definitely not required).
All in all, I really enjoyed playing this game! Congrats again 👏
Wow, thank you so much!
Having an audio feedback for changing the volume is a great idea! We'll see if we can implement that!
The visuals for the riddle might have to wait, but we wrote it on the list for the next game. I already play around with some ideas to make the riddles accessible for deaf and hard of hearing people as well. Maybe I'll find a way where both (and more) groups profit.
To clarify, I meant an audio affordance for changing which audio channel is selected. I actually think making volume changes was actually quite clean (and I certainly wouldn't want anything that makes it harder to hear or understand the audio playing!)
And +100 for making games deaf / hard-of-hearing accessible 👏 - you could probably even do it with this (with a bunch of overlapping subtitles or something 🤣)
Thank you for your clarification!
The screen reader is not working on the browser version of this game for me, and there is no TTS fallback. I use Linux with ORCA screen reader, so I can't play the windows version.
But the game was playable and it was fun playing tape recorder detective. Nice job on the recordings and voice acting.
Thank you for your feedback!!
We're super sorry for the browser version not having screenreader support. It seems to be a very common problem that we weren't able to solve yet. If you have any hints - we would love to get them.
We'll try to export a version for Linux, but we had the impression that Orca doesn't seem to like Godot unfortunately. At least in the test view it simply refused to read anything we added for accessibilty (alternative texts etc.).
With Godot browser version is not yet accessible friendly out of the box. But btzr has been working on an addon for a long time for this: https://github.com/btzr-io/godot-aria
Alternatively, I think the TTS can be used to speak text: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/audio/text_to_speech.html#basic...
ORCA works with live regions and buttons, sliders, etc. for me, It reads the accessibility_name or button text. I'm not sure about non-interactive nodes like labels that don't have accessibility mode set. I ended up using a live region to get any screen reader to read out the text I want it to.
Wow, thank you!
We'll see what we can do with that. It might take some time as we have our day-jobs back but the addon looks quite promising!!
I really wish I had how to skip the dialogs for a replay
Hi! You can skip dialogue if you want. Either by deactivating autoplay and pressing backspace or by pressing D to skip to the riddle immediately. You can also adjust the keys if you prefer other input.
Well, shame on you for having players that don't follow instructions XD
This was a ton of fun. Easily my favorite all around. A very clever idea and clean execution. Great job!
Haha, no problem. We definitely learned that we have to change stuff in the tutorial - there were more players confused about it, so obviously we can improve there.
It's super nice to hear that you enjoyed it!!
Nice submission! It’s short, sweet, and possibly about me? While not entirely original, the main mechanic is always fun whenever I encounter it. I would have loved to see a more personal spin on it, like the ability to scrub through the audio tracks at triple-speed with the left and right arrow keys, or maybe some tracks are reversed and you need to change their directions with the R key. This is a good foundation for something much longer if you’d like to explore this concept further—the puzzle is just slightly underbaked.
Thank you!
And yes, there sure is a lot of potential for the riddles!
Your ideas are super nice. Can you tell us what games use similar mechanics? I didn't knew any, although I expected that there are games alike. But it would be fun to explore other games and learn from them too.
Hi to all and thanks for the feedback so far! We did some adjustments and bug fixes :
If there is anything else, please let us know!
Thanks for the update! Beware that, at least on Windows with NVDA, the label for the new autoplay choice isn’t read aloud, so the user is presented with yes or no buttons without any context. However, all of the items on the settings screen worked great for me!
Thank you!
The text was there, but the checkbox unchecked. We corrected it.
Cool audiogame mechanic here. The story and especially VAS interaction is superbe, hehe. With the “name” puzzle I think I didn´t hear any name in the channels… The instructions went fast, but I always read the page instructions before playing the game.
It´s a very cool project, congratulations!! ^^
Thank you so much for your feedback!
We're happy that you like it!!
Hi!
We checkes the riddle - the name is there, but it's hidden quite well.
Maybe we adjust this in a future update.
I caught it too, if that helps. It did take a few loops to find the correct channel at the exact time, but the name was indeed said. This was maybe the main reason behind my initial feedback and wanting more agency with scanning through the audio tracks.
The intro with VAS being helpfully unhelpful was hilarious but I got stuck trying to work out the instructions, they went by so fast and I don't really know what to do when you have to play with the audio levels of the clip. I'm low vision but don't use a screen reader so reading fast is hard and the instructions disappeared so fast that I'm just a bit lost, sorry. You got me hooked successfully in the first few mins though, really good voice acting!
Thank you!!
If you want to read slow there is an option to disable autoplay. Then you continue manually and can take your time.
This concept is so fun! I really like it.
I did have a problem, as I couldnt continue playing after returning to the main menu so I had to launch the game again. Other than that, everything looks good!
We're happy to hear you like it!
At what phase were you returning to the main menu (dialogue, tutorial prompt, riddle, choices)? And why were you unalbe to return? Was the option missing or did the game crash?
Maybe we can find the bug and repair it :)
It was during dialogue, specifically after answering the second puzzle, when the protag is apologizing to the diner staff 🙂
There was nothing reading out the controls. The text of each also went by too fast to read
Thank you so much for your feedback!
Which system have you tried it on? The browser-based version or the Windows download? The browser version is not compatible with screen readers, but the download version is. We tested it with NVDA.
You can check the settings at any time by pressing ESC. There, you can also disable autoplay to continue manually through the story and tutorial prompts.
We will adjust the speed of the tutorial prompts so that they are slower in the autoplay version, and we will add a note to say that the menu is always available via the ESC button. It might take two days as our vacation is over and the daytime jobs took over again.
If there is anything else please let us know! We really hope you like the game!
