Congrats on getting a submission for the jam.

I think there are some basic flow things that probably need better screen reader support (some of the modals didn't have the best affordances on what was being shown or how to close them). I think there's a lot of bits here that are nice, but probably don't add a ton of value for blind players (like setting the unit colors), and I wonder how much of the modals and configuration you could cut out to make it easier to get straight into the game!

Side note - I'm surprised you didn't end up making a web build since this uses Web Awesome - I'm genuinely curious how you put this together (since I've been following the Web Awesome development for quite a while, and I'm working on my own web applications with it as well).

Again, congrats on making the submission and thank you for sharing it for the jam!

I tried out this game and I think it may have potential if you can fix bugs since i had some issues navigating the colony. I was trying to get the map focused but it was a bit tricky to do. Also i had my antivirus software flag the game so i had to say run anyway to get past it. I think if you can fix bugs and improve the game it would be interesting to see how it develops. Thanks for the submission.

Nice submission! My understanding is that this is a work in progress, and I appreciate you sharing both builds and the changes in your development log. While there’s not yet much to do, you’ve got the foundation in place and I see its potential.

Here’s some constructive feedback on v0.3.0 using NVDA:

  • It installs great inside the sandbox of the itch.io app!
  • Should there be a button to go back to the main menu from the settings and credits? I have a back button on my mouse that seemed to work, and it can be done in the right-click context menu, but it seems easy to get stuck here.
  • When creating my colony and colonists, I hear additional descriptions for each field, but it would be helpful if they were displayed visually. The tab order might need some attention here too.
  • What about Ctrl+Space (or Ctrl+Enter) to also right click? It would be easier to reach with one hand rather than Shift+F10.
  • I was expecting to be able to click and drag the map. I hope this is still on the to-do list!
  • I got trapped inside the Colony Manager dialog after selecting a colonist and choosing to locate them on the map. The dialog remains stuck open for me and I have to exit the game.
  • My CPU is only okay, but the tick rate still seemed to stutter a bit, usually when the UI is animating. Unfortunately, this includes when you navigate between tiles with the keyboard or when messages pop up. Maybe there are some hidden optimizations to find?
  • I noticed a few little ARIA details that could improve the screen reader experience, but I’ll assume you’re aware and iterating on those as you playtest. You mentioned a UI framework, so I imagine not everything is under your control anyway.
  • Overall, I enjoyed the ambiance and RimWorld-esque aesthetic. I did as one does and built myself a cave!

Please continue to iterate and let us know about your updates. Hope this helps!

I like the scenario of the game and the setup. I like these kinds of harvest and manage resources, manage your citizens and their stations and actions. It’s a real time strategy game, or at least a basis for one. It reminds me a little of that “A Dark Room” game. And the sounds are nice, and it’s nice to harvest things and hear your crew harvesting stone and wood. And the art is simple and retro, it’s nice.

But I think I don’t understand and I think the game doesn’t have a proper game loop? If I’m wrong, then I think this wasn’t clearly communicated. I know I can harvest things but I don’t know what to do with them, or how to automate what my characters do. Further, I couldn’t figure out how to play without a mouse to click on things to then interact with them. I had to right-click twice on each cell to then have an option to interact with it. And I don’t know how to do that with the keyboard.

I also feel that the map starts off quite big before we really understand how to navigate it, and I think I couldn’t do this with eyes closed. I would feel very lost. This would greatly benefit from a tutorial or at least a written guide to explain to us how to play. However, I’m looking forward to see this, if you’re thinking of updating it or doing a similar game in the future.

Thanks for your feedback! I will be publishing an update shortly to address this. The game is escentially in alpha so there isn't a lot of content right now.

Hi, what am I supposed to do after creating my colony? Also, instead of the color sliders for hsv and stuff, use normal color names for shirt and skin color, also make it a dropdown menu like the starting items menu, that's more accessible to blind people like me.

Hey, just FYI I'm blind too. I actually opened a bug about the colors thing. If you want to see it fixed then considder upvoting my issue on Github: https://github.com/shoelace-style/webawesome/discussions/2067 In terms of the gameplay there is not much to do right now beyond harvesting things but I will be adding a lot more soon.

Is there any way to have some preset colors offered? Or is that also not supported by the engine / thingy you’re using?
