The Doom Colossus
Instrumental
Music by the Symphonic squirrel for Kale Overlords Impressions Jam 4.
The Doom Colossus Story:
Huge slopping, gray mountains flank you on either side. Desolate and barren they are. Stones, rumble, and smoldering ruins littered the valley and sides of the ridges. There is nothing left of the villages that you use to visit. You are unsettled by the sight. It makes you feel sad. You start to believe that, perhaps, the rumors are indeed true. But you can’t fathom it. It is unthinkable, dreadful if it is.
Then peering through the fog and massive cloud bank, you see it. More like hear something. A low roar that echoes through the valley and stone. Then appearing out of the mist, a huge grayish cylinder object breaks through the cloud, blue lightning and orange flame surrounding it. It consumes all the rock and mountain around it, blasting and dismantling everything in its path.
You are seized by an overwhelming fear and desire to run. There it is; you have to believe it now. The thing that you wanted to be false, unreal, and a myth. No longer. You fall to your knees. Nothing will stop it. You wail in anger and fear. There is no hope for those in its path. You moron for those lost already and the ones to come
You set off in the opposite direction, determined to find a way to stop it, no matter the costs.

Since I was busy most of the two weeks, I only had like a few hours, perhaps two to three days at most, to work on the music. But I had a good time doing it. I hope you enjoy it.
What was used:
Ableton Live 12
SoundPaint - Adastra Solo Violin (First time using these samples)
SoundPaint - Percussion - Cymbal Effects
Sonuscore - The Strings of Winter
Sonuscore - The Orchestra Essentials
Kontakt - Ethereal Earth
Valhalla - ValhallaVintageVerb
How did you Innovate? (Complete later if you need to submit on time)
Sadly I was sort on time so I didn't really get a chance to use my innovation. However, I did use new instruments from SoundPaint and with those I experimented with using phasers. I also used animation on my tracks to move the dynamics and volumes of the strings to make them more expressive. This was the first time I successfully impolmented this.

Really love the feeling of the synths. I feel it in my gut, the space evoked with so little right off the bat.
I think the initial strings were maybe a little dry and could use more dynamics, but they're well composed.
The composition is overall excellent. I think the execution on the strings could have used a bit more. But you didn't have much time, really fantastic job.
I think compositionally this is some of your best work as well.
Beautiful job!
Thanks so much Kale. That means a lot. Indeed, I did run out of time! I spent the last two days working on it. Yah, the strings need a little more depth as you said. But that is nothing a little bit of editing can't fix. Again, thanks Kale!
Nice work!! Love the contrast between the tracks, nailed the theme. The cascading strings towards the end of the second track made me think of One-Winged Angel. If you had more time I might recommend finessing the solo violin mockup since it's up front so much, but really fantastic job given first time with that sample and the time restraint!
Thank you so much! Yes, I wish I had had more time to finish things up and make it more in depth. Thanks for listening!
This is REALLY nice! Considering the time you only had this is God right impressive!
The first song had a really nice floaty feeling to it. The combination with your synth drone and string worked quite well and were nicely complimented by your use of the metallic percussions.
Second song created a nice tension while still feeling cohesive with the first song. At starting it reminded me a bit of The Rite of Spring second movement. I think getting your percussions roaring more by complimenting or accenting the strings would be a very nice addition. But still it sounded nice.
The third song is a nice touch to fade us out. It also had a nice ambience that tied very well to the first song and gave it somewhat of a meditative touch. Also the Modulation in the reverb tail was a nice detail.
All in all I’m very impressed.
Thank you so much EinelTheFox, you really made my day with this post. I am trying lol. My aim was to make a airy, ambient sort of track for the first one and I think that really came through. Ahh yes, it does sound like the The Rite of Spring! Good ear. It seems everyone has mentioned I needed more percussions there lol. I think that is where I will focus on when I came back to the piece. Thanks for pointing it out. And thank you for all of your thoughts, they made a lot to me. You make me a better composer with them! Cheers!
All right, I know you didn't have lots of time making this. I like the ambient section its very nice, the transition now, this is where I can feel the "lack of time making the track" I like the vibe, don't like the arrangement, especially the octave strings at 3:00, the melody feels very off with what's playing underneath, now is the time to open the orchestration book and see what texture and orchestral elements you can put instead of playing octaves strings all the way. Cool percussive elements too, pretty unique. Good job !
Thanks FoxHyode! I apricate your honesty! Indeed. The transition is quite lacking. Thanks for pointing that out. Plus the the octave section at 3:00, needs to be redone as you said. Again, thanks for your honesty! When I come back to the piece I will take stock of all of these things and mix it up. Plus I need to add more percussive elements.
Thanks for listening!
I really liked the overall progression of this piece, it felt like an epic story being told purely through the music. The ending especially made the track feel very cohesive. Good job!
Thanks Max! It needed some more ohmph but it came out pretty well. Thanks for listening!
You've got a lot of good movement going on here. What's great is how the anticipation builds, not just thrown in your face all of a sudden. I think you could've gone with a deeper sound somewhere in the track to fill some space, but overall, I like the track.
Great work!
Thanks bro! Yes, I totally agree! It needed some more deeper sounds in the middle and at the climax! But I ran out of time and oddly enough, didn't think about it lol. Plus I wanted to be a bit different because I have used heavy perc for the past few songs. Anyway, thank you! I will address the deeper sounds when I return to it! Thanks for listening!
Glad you managed to your submission done!
Feeling some Halo inspiration in this, the vibe is great, especially the more ambient parts are really nice.
On the Storm Colossus part, the very chaotic tension feeling is nice, but to me it felt that it lacked a good low end, maybe it could've maybe been a good place to add some low percussion to amp up the tension and help add gravitas to the colossus.
I agree with muttzilla on the reverb, although I guess its mostly the string sections that feel a bit disconnected from the rest since they're a lot more focused and bright sounding compared to the solo violin and pads, which are more ambient and distant sounding (at least felt like that to me)
Playing around with removing some high end with an EQ maybe could've helped with getting them to blend better spatially, since even if you add more reverb, the brightness of the sound still makes them feel a lot closer compared to everything else (not a production pro though, so take this with a grain of salt 😉)
Good job!
Thank you so much Eetue! Yes, I agree with you both. But I rushed sadly. I only had one afternoon to fully work on the soundtrack so I forgot some things. It does need more reverb and some bigger or louder percussions to come in at that point. Thanks for pointing this out and your advice. It is very helpful.
Damn I think you nailed the theme, the song took me though quite a journey. The composition felt top-notch, the right emotion / feeling every step of the song, goosebumps on that 3:10 passage!
Not sure on the execution, its fine overall, but it depends on the intention, if this is for a PS1 game, awesome, if its for something more modern, we gotta get some reverb work. But most instruments found theyr space, I would maybe wide it a lil bit, maybe some Haas effect would do the trick.
Loved it! Take care :)
Thanks! Yah, I was rushed so I didn't get to do more reverb and such. But I agree, needs way more of it!
