I gotta say- the first time I opened your game I didn't know if this is gonna be good or not. Start menu? Longish instructions (but with the combat part missing)? Mid 80's PC graphics? This could have been a hit or a miss.

Fortunately- a hit!

I had three runs. First one I got defeated fairly quickly. Second- By the first "boss" (now I learned to have my stats screen open to track my health). Last time- I finished the game. And just barely! If the boss had just one more round I would have been defeated for sure! So yeah- the gameplay was engaging and exciting, even if it looked like I was trying to close a bunch of windows really fast :) Other than that the UI was intuitive and easy to navigate. I focused on fighting monsters, not interface.

The presentation fit the setting, so the simple graphics built the atmosphere. The sound also fit, but in this case I'd like a bit more that just two sounds. Maybe a bit of background music, or a little fanfare, when you beat an enemy?

As for the theme. I get how the game fit it- you had a limited disc space space, so you couldn't save every file. The thing is... it was never an issue. I used thee strongest equipment and deleted the weaker items once I figured there was no way to sell them. As for the healing items... I just used them! I only had to decrease my stats once, and since I was pretty strong it didn't bother me that much. What I'm saying is that you could have leaned into the theme a bit more.

Over all- I'd like to play a longer game like that. Or better yet- split into two layers. One like this, and another in a "real world" where you can find upgrades for your computer (saving different character builds on floppy disks... I can really see it)! Great work! Keep it up!

I really enjoyed this! I like both the attack and defense QTE-type mechanics. I was a bit frustrated initially before finding the weapons folder, then it was a bit smoother. I lost my first run, but after seeing how useful defense is, won much easier the second time around. I also appreciate the attack has a ‘hit’ and ‘crit’ section. Made it feel good to hit the green, but not too bad to hit the grey.

I love the theming - both the computer file aesthetic and the choice between health/offense/defense. It does seem like giving up health for defense is a bit strong, since I was getting hit for 14-15 by the boss the first time, and just 1 or 2 the second. But was fun to have the option to trade-off.

I encountered a bug where I couldn't use anything and couldn't close the remote server. It didn't ruin my experience with the game.

The graphics are amazing, and I really like the style. It's really cool how you've designed the computer system. And it's awesome how the battles unfold. It's unique that we need to quickly close the pop-up windows.

Great job

Hi, thanks for playing the game! And thanks for liking the style! I'm quite happy that many people are liking it.

As for the bug, I’ll definitely look into that to make sure it's working as intended. While i can't update the game for this game jam, this feedback will help me to polish my future games! Just some context on those mechanics in case it helps: saved items should be accessible through the local file system, and you can use them right away by either double clicking on it or right click then use (or equip if it's an equipment). As for the remote server, the close button is disabled if you're in an encounter, so you have to use the flee button.

If that's not it, it might indeed be a sneaky bug I missed! Thanks again for the support!

The game thought I was in combat, even though I wasn't. Good luck!

more people need to play this! incredible game

to anyone jus reading these comments and havent played it, its basically an RPG game all based around old computer stuff, so u manage different windows and can click and drag them around, the enemies attacks are literally poppups you have to cancel and all the items and equipment are based around computer stuff, like having an antidote weapon because you're fighting viruses and getting armour thats literally just a proxy device, as someone with a background in basic computer science i really enjoyed this game, id reccomend anyone else on this Jam to give it a go because its super super unique and extremely polished

Nice art style. I found that I could only take one "hit" before the system restarted. I managed to remove the first two viruses and download the health patches, but then when I got to the 35kb virusif Imissed one abort button then the system errored and I didn't get a chance to use my health patches/core recovery files. It's got promise though.

Developer

Hi, thanks for liking the art style! I'm not really that good on pixel art, so hearing you liked it means a lot!

Actually, you can use the health patch whenever you want! It doesn't have to be in a fight, because you can access the file system program whenever you want and use the files inside. This game also doesn't limit the character's maximum health, so you can keep healing the player. The only limit is the disk space; it only has 64KB space, so the character's health data can't go beyond that!

Was fun and I really liked the art style. I don’t think I 100% understood the relation to the theme, but regardless it was fun.

Hi, thanks for enjoying it! My interpretation of the theme is 'You can't save all the files that you found on the network explorer'. This is because the player only have a limited space on their disk (64KB). I wanted to encourage player to be smart of what files they choose to keep in their local file system. Though, the game doesn't really forces you to save all files, and it is still beatable, but it might make the journey more challenging!
