This is one of those spot the difference games (Papers, Please) but with MATH and an abacus.  Cool

I'd like to have access to all the edicts while on the beat... you know like take the letters with me.

I went around and just charged people exorbitant amounts until they agreed to pay.  But sometimes they wouldn't pay what they owed.  The rules for everything were a little unclear, but I like the theme and setting, and would consider this a game worth continuing.

That being said -- Taxes suck!

Submitted

it was great but sometimes the merchants would say that's far too much then I would lower it until it was way lower and then it would say that the outstanding balance was - which I believe means I didn't take enough from them but they would not let me take that amount from them, but other than that it was great did I love having to do math not really but I had fun playing it

Wow, this was thorough, I really liked how large the map was. It really felt like I had a far way to go to collect taxes from everyone which was very immersive! I like the idea of having to do math, but it can get a bit cumbersome as the game goes on. I also think it would be awesome to show the EXCESS amount you've "stolen" rather than just show the oustanding balance as $0 all the time.

Overall an incredible idea and clever take on the jam's theme. Nicely done :)

Thanks for playing and thanks for the kind words! ☺️

To be honest I was concerned it was going to be too boring, but I didn't find the time to get someone else to do a real play test so I just had to send it, lol

Great concept and execution, really enjoyed it. More merchant feedback and a way to view the previous day’s report would improve it even more.

Very unique idea, and the execution is pretty good too, it's just that I wish the game had a tutorial. I missed the letter on my first go around and was very confused. A giant floating arrow pointing to it would help greatly.

I loved the abacus system, very fun, the map was surprising to see too it looked so elaborate.

I think the new day transition could do with being way shorter and some guy told me I collected from him before even though I never saw his face before, did I get juked? Anywho, cool game, just needs more polish, also I think how much tax is needed needs to be communicated more clearly, as in dumb it down way more so people know what you mean.

Oh and my favourite part of the game was adding a little bit on the tax that I calculated so I can skim some off the top, felt very criminal.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

That's a good idea with the letter! I can add something to get the players attention, maybe I also won't let the player leave the first day until they read the letter 🤔

Submitted(+1)

Really cool idea!

I like that there is both the element of taking the money AND the element of travel, adds dimentionality to the gameplay. There's more choices to make, so the game feels more complete.

But man, am I bad at math haha I was never sure how much money to ask for and maybe I'm too much of a goody-two-shoes because I never asked for outrageous amounts. Maybe I should have tried being a little eviller, would be better for me evidently!

Really great job, congrats!

Developer(+1)

You're right, math is for the goody-two-shoes, come to the dark side where we have money and don't bother with math (jk I love math) 😅

Thanks for playing & I'm glad you had fun! :)

Submitted(+1)

Really enjoyed this, great idea and execution! I would prefer the interactions with the merchants to have more feedback and be more engaging like for example their reactions could reflect how outrageous or not your demand is. Also unless I missed it, a way to peak at the previous day's report would be nice. Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks for playing & glad you enjoyed!

No you didn't miss anything, I just forgot to give the player to view old ledgers 🙃 I'll include that in the list of to-do's for the post-jam update

Submitted(+1)

wow thats really cool
please add confirmation button on skipping the day, I felt for this trap twice

Developer

That's a good idea! I just added one to the local build, it'll go up in the post jam update 🫡

Submitted(+1)

I really like the concept of being a medieval taxman trying to milk the most out of subjects! I also like how theres a spatial challenge of some of the better districts being farther away and it taking time. Wish there was more of a downside or punishment from asking an outrageous price. Could make picking the right amount on the abacus more intense lol!  But other then that the gameplay loop is really cool! Getting the letters each day add a lot of satisfying narrative and the stamp press fits so well. Keep up the great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Originally merchants we're going to only allow you to make like 3ish offers before they refused to pay and then you'd have the option to call the guards on them to take all their money at the cost of their shop shutting down, but I ran out of time to include it lol

Submitted(+1)

Very fun game and great twisting of the theme! I really liked the extra missions given each day, it would be nice to have them randomly assigned at each new run.  I've spent some good time playing, great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

I tried to put the missions in order of increasing complexity to make you focus on different things: where the castle wall is, how far away a district is from the Castle Ward, and what type of good a shop has. Perhaps if I had more events I could randomize them

Submitted(+1)

The art is really pretty and the map is so big. I wonder what town you took inspiration from! There is potential here for upgrades or hirelings and so on. Really cool concept and great work! :)

Developer

Thanks! It was originally a randomly generated town for table top games, I have the source for the tool in the credits 😜

Submitted(+1)

Really impressive amount of work for a week — the art is cool and the music is cozy.
The font was a bit hard to read though.
Would love a feature to check today's tax rules on the go.

Developer

Thanks! I'm not much of an artist and used Slay The Spire 2's placeholder art as my mood board 😅

But yeah I definitely want to add a way to view the rules while you travel around

Submitted(+1)

There are so many different cool parts in this game! The time calculation between the distances, the working clock and the big ass map and the music fits really well! I also thought this game was about calculating math until I realized you could get more money than the percentages you are directed to follow. That took a little bit of the strategy out for me, since then the game is more about trying to get a number as high as possible by gut feeling. Unless there is a way to know how to get the maximum value?

Developer

Thanks! yeah originally there was supposed to be more haggling back & forth and the merchant would reject your offer if you asked too much too many times, but I never got around to it 😅

but you'll actually lose the game if you're honest, you NEED to take more than the percentages tell you to take in order to win (just in its current state you can take way more than I intended you to, haha)

Submitted(+1)

Nice idea to steal money from merchants by taxes! That's original. I like the aesthetic overall, but the merchants drawings seem off when you compare it with the detailed scene. Gameplay-wise, I couldn't get anywhere close to not being in negative numbers :C. Maybe I'm too honest, haha. And the day is too short to cover all shops. Overall, the game has potential. Congrats on the entry!

Developer

Thanks!

I purposely made traveling too expensive to visit everyone in one day :D

But luckily you can collect back taxes from previous days, so you just have to hit up the merchants you missed on previous days

Submitted(+1)

Nice idea and love the map! And also that you can steal from them and call it a tax. I read the other comments and believe that if you put in a little more effort into the reactions of the vendors (like haggling, etc.) that this really could be a lot of fun! Regarding the map: Maybe putting the red pin over the blue one would have helped the player to understand where the current location is on the map. For a game done in a week you put in so much elements - good job!

Developer

Thanks! & thanks for the comment & feedback in particular, that's some of my favorite parts of a jam :)

Those silly map pins were a once-and-done thing, I never had the time to get back to something better 😅

Submitted(+2)

Very original idea and executed well - you got so much into a week's work!

I enjoyed practising a bit of maths and the concept of taking off a little more on top. Remembering and planning out what rules applied was also fun, it's a good puzzle game!

I wish there was more of a mechanic to haggling/persuading people when they are refusing to pay. I imagine that's where the probability comes in, but because this isn't visualized in any way I don't understand the risk as easily. This may be in part because you want the player to work out the correct amount themselves so you can't show the range of how much the player is over or under I guess, but it means that in some places I feel a little out of control and at the whim of the RNG.

I liked the map travel, only wish something had more clearly indicated where I am at any given point, I lost myself on the map at times.

The graphics were nice, though I think there's a bit too much of a mix of different art styles and the pixel art clashes with the other UI elements. All the assets are great on their own, but I think the overall style could be more cohesive.

Super cool concept and execution overall! Great work!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for all the kind words!

The game was a lot of effort and a scramble towards the end.

I wish I could have had more time or more hands to hit our remaining stretch goals like better haggling and to help smooth out the remaining rough edges and to tie everything together better. But alas it's a game jam submission and there will always be more to do and there will always be something wrong

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely, what you got done is super impressive! The map alone looks like it was a hell of a lot of effort and consideration and the tax calculation sheet is so cool, that can't have been quick or easy either.

Developer

For the tax sheet I consulted my partner who is an accountant 😅 it went through many many iterations to get it to its current form

But yeah a lot of elements took a long time. The clock took a whole day making it look like it currently does and getting the time fast forwarding working, the abacus took some time first learning how an abacus works and then actually making it work and I spent a lot of time making an interface where you have to move the beads manually but it was a pain to use so it was scrapped, even the dialogues changed a lot there used to be unique dialogues for everyone but it was too much to juggle so I just streamlined it to all be the same.

(+1)

I was in the red for 3 days till I realized I was playing a game about theft lol great idea and smooth gameplay. First time seeing a vendor which was a white stick figure caught me off guard but good graphics and game

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Haha embrace the need for theft! 😀

Also seeing this comment made me realize we forgot to upload the final build that fixes the merchant art, I hope there isn't anything else broken in that build

Very nice graphics and sounds. Unfortunately a bit pointless as you can't fail.

Developer

Thanks, but I'm not sure I'd call it pointless 😅 you can only succeed if you steal more than you need, you fail if you follow the rules (granted I had zero time for game balance)

(1 edit)

Ah I see. As a gamer I obviously try to test limits haha. Didn't find any so it felt pointless, because I can just max out every time and don't have to think / apply any skill. That's what I mean by pointless. There's no challenge, skill or things I have to watch out for.

Edit: Reading the other comments I might have actually broken the game smh. I successfully took more than 300000 each time and they were always "Great, here you go, have a nice day" and on the end day screen there was no problem either.

Developer

Ok dang I must have messed up the merchant algorithm in one of my last updates, they are supposed to reject your request if you ask too much. I think the hard limit is supposed to be 50% of what they make in a day, but it should actually be lower than that based on random factors. You should be getting at most like $300ish from someone, not 300000 lmao

(+1)

hahaha okay that makes sense now. Had a fun time streaming it to the crew and we were making millions ripping off those poor vendors and after 2 days the fun was gone. We were wondering if the gameplay part just went missing along the development.

Will have to try again then :)
