How was the theme(s) implemented?
We went for "Cleaning up the hero's mess" as well as "Dragons". For cleaning up the hero's mess, the entire plot revolves around it, and we even have a 'cleaning' mechanic that helps the narrative. Dragons are depicted all throughout the game. whether it's the HUD, the items you can find, the *cough* final boss *cough* or even a level layout (floor 16 is in the shape of a dragon's head), there are loads of dragons, and dragon references throughout the game.

Where did the assets come from?

Homemade graphics

Most Graphics were created by the team during the jam

External audio

Some audio assets were downloaded or made prior to the jam

One of the better game-jam games I've seen/played, I played through the whole thing in one sitting. Really enjoyed the art style. Only improvement I would suggest would be to add some ambient music in the dungeons.

Great work!

Probably one of my favorite games :) It showed a good level of completon, did not felt like a rushed half-finished game so that's nice.
The economy of the game sortof made sense (except for bosses giving you 20 gold :'( or a dragon dropping a steak XD). I also had a few issues while trying to click on mimic but frankly, if that's the only issue, there is no issue ;)

That was a bit long imo but I still managed to go from beginning to end while not getting too bored of repetitiveness.

The art was really enjoyable, the audio was maybe a bit missing. But the variety in decors and monsters made up for it. Congrats

This is my favorite entry so far! I loved every moment of it and am looking forward to coming back to finish it. I played for about an hour and it was an almost perfect entry.

This is one of the games which got the highest ratings from me. I mean it stands out even between all those dozens of magnificent games in the jam.  I only broke one star from Overall category bcs game is way too long for me and there's no saving. I was exhausted by the time i beat the game. I don't think  it's a game that should be completed in one sitting but i did anyway. If the jam was a week longer, this would easily be a full game which you could publish after the jam is over :D

The hand crafted art looks fantastic. I mean nothing looks bad or out of the place. No conflict in art style. It is a 3d game, the levels are polygon meshes while the enemies are 2s sprites but they blend perfectly. I normally  don't like 2d enemy sprites on a 3d map but i liked this one. The textures used on the map gives a great retro 2d game feeling.

I love the loot system in this game. I think there are way too many items and equipment for a jam game. It feels real great to upgrade your equipment by finding loot on chests and enemies also i liked that the loot is randomized too. The tavern part is also great, it's like a hub where you can buy&sell stuff. You can sell the trinkets you found in dungeons to make money, in addition to farming gold. The loot, inventory and variety in equipment is the best i have seen among all the games in the jam and not just this jam, the previous ones included. I also have to say that i loved the icon art of weapons&equipment in the inventory. The fact that they are all handcrafted makes it much more precious. The enemy art is perfect, i like the animation and particle effects on combat too. They have this bouncing effect which makes them look alive somehow. I totally loved minimap. It looks great and functional with the notations and stuff. Also it has the rare system  in crawlers which is that  it reveals all the tiles in your FOV not only the tile you stepped on. I love how minimap rotates as your character turns to prevent disorientation as well. It's a small thing but i like torch too. When you unequip the torch the spike traps become much harder to spot.

I found the enemy AI a little bit weird. It didn't feel very consistent. I think the game has tick based action and enemies are aggroed when you enter their line of sight. It feels like enemies skip a turn sometimes, they don't act with your every move. In tick based games enemies usually get a free attack when you move the tile next to them so you press wait key to make them come near you, it doesn't work like that in this game. Also enemies sometimes get away from you, i couldn't figure out why. Sometimes you hit enemies and they don't hit in return. I don't know if they skip turn or if they're stunned or something bcs there's no log to communicate the player what's going on. Another thing is that you level up in this game. There's this green xp bar on HUD. But i don't know what happens when you level up, your HP is getting increased?  I also spotted a bug; when you buy a potion at the tavern it adds 2 potions to your inventory.

I think we both had somewhat similar ideas eventhough our games are pretty different like my game has food/hunger mechanic too. Also the gated progression of the maze with keys and runes, that's the structure i had in mind as well. But yours is a complete and much better executed game ofc.

I congratulate and thank your entire team for sharing this excellent game!

Fantastic experience!

Took me 2h20m to complete it but it never got boring. I think it was a good mix of exploring, inventory management, fighting, tavern refilling and "puzzles". I felt the look around was a bit awkward in the beginning but I quickly got used to it. Graphics of the dungeon is great.

Some minor things I noticed. I used shift click on items to transfer them from chests to inventory. Its a good option to have cause dragging them is a bit tedious. I missed this option for selling stuff though.
There does not seem to be a way to sell stacks of items, which would be nice.

Tavern is a nice safehaven in the world, with good catchy music, love it!

The variety of items was about right for a jam game like this.

The amount of levels is a bit long for a jam game and prob to short for a full game, but I completed the game and had fun so I guess since the game was engaging the length became more accepting :P.

Minimap is ok I guess, and the option to make it a large one is useful. Some more love to the UI to make it more coherent and prettier would be nice.

I like that the height is different in different sections of the levels, it gives a greater depth to the game.

All in all very nice game!

Thank you so much for the kind words and we always appreciate the feedback! We're glad you enjoyed your time with the game! :) 2hr and 20mins is definitely a lot longer than we were intending the game to go. :p

I had a lot of fun playing this! The tutorial was clear and didn't outstay its welcome. I felt a sense of pressure with the dialogue at the end of each level and there was a good variety of monsters.

Thank you so much for the kind review! We're very glad you enjoyed it! :)

Absolute Cinema of a game!

I had to go back and play it again so I could finish the whole game.

I loved the audio, visuals, enemies and pretty much everything in the game. Some monsters like the spider jumpscared me and towards the end I got so rich I had everything maxed out and 20k gold in my back pocket.

The story of having to stop some trash leaving "Hero" was funny and then finding the guy burned to crisp at the end.

10/10 Best Dungeon Crawler i've played yet.

Developer

Haha well I am glad you liked our game! What a great review that made me laugh, yeah the spiders dropping down caught me a few times, I wish we had time to add like a drop down sound, I am glad you enjoyed the story and also the guy burnt at the end.

Love the cinema meme post too :) thank you for playing.

Well, that was fantastic. This game has pretty much everything, and it's all polished too.

It is a monster of a game, and i'll get that upfront that I think it's too much for a jam. "Oh no, my steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery!", it is very much a good problem to have, but there is a trend this year of massive games, and in order give all the entries a fair crack, it is an enormous time commitment.

With that out of the way. This is just wonderful. Movement and perspective is excellent. Lots and lots of subtle or not so subtle nods to staples in the genre. Even a chicken because that's so very meta. It's a game that's clearly had a huge amount of effort and thought put into it, and it shows in spades.

The themes integrate really well, and don't feel tacked on.  The art is consistent and if your artist has managed to produce all of that over the week, its a huge achievement.

Fanstatic effort to you all, thank you. I'd be surpised if this isn't winning a prize.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for all the kind words! :)

Yeah, we definitely should have cut a few more levels out. (already cut out 4)

I'm glad the amount of effort shone through! Our team of 3 is currently unemployed, so we were able to give 12hrs+ a day. Me and the level designer even gave 30hrs at the end for final tweaks/polish/playtesting haha. All of the art was created during the period, by mainly our 1 team member, with other members helping where needed.

Thank you so much for the review! We can't wait to try out your submission!

Really impressive game! Extremely well polished for a nine day jam. I mean honestly might be one of the best, if not the best, games I've played yet. There's a lot to love. Only thing I'd wish for are saves, but nine days is nine days and this is extremely cool. Overall loved it! Thanks for making this.

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words! Yeah I agree saves would have been a great feature! We honestly didn't think the game would grow to be as large as it ended up being. We even cut 1 level from each biome (4 levels). Thank you again for the kind words, we'll be sure to check out your submission! :)

I'm throughly impressed with the amount of polish and functionality in this game.

Tutorial: Very well thought out.

Menus: Very nicely made.

Dungeons: Enjoyable to explore, minimap/map is top notch, puzzles were a nice touch.

Battle: Love how the turn based is implemented, animations and sfx were spot on.

Balance: Pretty good for a project made in such short time.

Only wish there was the ability to save the game, getting to floor 16 takes a good chunk of time.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! We are glad you enjoyed your time with it! Yeah, haha. We honestly didn't think the game would run as long as it did. It wasn't until the 2nd last day that we discovered the monster we created, and slashed 1 floor from each biome (4 levels). I also had to create god controls to test the game, which is something you generally shouldn't need in a jam game.

Submitted(+1)

Haha, you guys sure did put in some serious time into it! and it shows! (in a good way). It's been my favorite all-rounder yet, and will be surprised if I test another one so complete.
Again, good work and I look forward seeing what you guys come out with in the future.

"After reporting the hero dead, the kingdom celebrated."

The fool! They used the forbidden, the trademarked word (I mean beholder) !

I had a lot of fun. The game is very pleasant to control, I like that it uses turn-based combat and the RPG system is quite detailed. You know your game so I won't go into details ;) , but I like that there's quite some choices in the shop from the very start and all that's limiting you is your current money, the costs are appropriate by the way. Seeing the weapon (and torch/buckler) in the hands of the character is always a big plus but they also look notably good here and broadlier I like how consistent the visuals are. There are some cool extra details, like the spiders falling from the ceiling, I also like that opponents are affected by spikes. The floors are compact with multiple paths and closed doors to limit your progression which is better than long corridors (once again it's compact). Finally the difficulty was appropriate for a jam for me (I mean unless you're spending your money completely wrong on purpose then it's likely always easy so it could probably be a tiny bit harder but it's fine anyway).

Thanks for sharing!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words! We also wanted it to be just a touch harder, but we weren't sure if that was the 5000 playtest sessions talking, or the true difficulty revealing itself. lol

I like Mr. Sanders, as everybody loves chicken :) What a great game. I wish you many more ratings. Gameplay is smooth, sound is fitting and the graphics are nice, if a bit coarse. There is so much put into this game, so many items, the tavern, very nicely animated monsters… Very good entry!

Developer

Thanks so much for checking out our game and rating it means a lot!

This feels like an actual game not just a tech demo like most games in the jam. Very solid mechanics, love the controls, the turn based combat system feels like a good foundation that needs more depth than just hit and get hit. For example sometimes i can "dodge" hits if the enemy moves out of the way after a hit, that feels satisfying even if its not a core combat mechanic. You should definitely polish this a bit, the content is already there to publish this.

Also big thanks for the great, non intrusive tutorial.

Great job! :)

Developer

Thank you for checking out our game :) and we appreciate the ideas, if we had another week we had lots of plans and ideas to add more.  I am glad you enjoyed it.

This is a very solid game, notable for not feeling janky or unfinished or light on content at all. Good curve of power scaling that is noticeable and makes you feel good as you power up and get new gear, at the start you're very scrappy and making hard decisions about new equipment vs. sorely needed healing, but at the end you're a powerhouse, and that always feels great. Some really nice new gear to be surprised with later, when I had thought I'd seen everything. Also love the autosave at the start of a floor, forgiving but still a little punishing for failure. It took dying a few times to realize some of the chests were random, they really felt intentionally designed with what you get from them. Audio was great too, the inn music wasn't anything special BUT it always felt good to hear it again, it was like going home to a safe place.

Since there were almost no bugs I do feel the need to mention the few things I noticed, although I assume you must already know about them since the game feels very tested.

  • On the Annihilator floor, the door colors stopped working/being correct, and there may have been a few other floors after that with some door color issues.
  • There was a bug in the player's favor that sometimes when you buy things, particularly large healing potions, you get two of them instead of one, that happened to me several times.
  • Once when I stacked two of the best potions on top of each other, I swear the stack "ate" the second one, and I died on purpose so that wouldn't happen again because they're so valuable, didn't stack them the second time.
  • One time when I died, I suddenly had 3 of the best potion in my inventory. I assumed this was some kind of player aid mechanic for dying. But then when I died and restarted again, I only had one.
  • One time I discarded a gem to pick up another item, and I assumed that discard would drop it on the floor like other floating items, but it did not, I suppose that's on me for assuming. Then with the space freed up from the gem, the other floor item did not want to pick up. Maybe I wasn't standing in just the right spot for it. I moved some items around in inventory and then it did eventually pick up.
  • Throughout the game I picked up 2 or 3 extra rusty keys, and I was excited at the prospect of getting to the end to open a bunch of extra doors for my foresight in keeping them, but this did not happen. :) I always enjoy stuff like that in games, something that can happen in a few Zelda games.

But overall this was a really nice game and you should sell it immediately on Steam for $1 to $20, whatever you think is fair.

Developer

Thanks so much for the detailed response, Yeah we did as much playtesting in the final day as we really could. The potion stacking glitch we thought we had fixed that but I guess that might still be an issue to address. We had a weird bug were weapons would stack on your character as well haha, even though it didn't give us any extra stats it was still funny.  We tossed a few ideas like dropping more items and them having icons on the floor, moving on the main map, a stats page, but unfortunately we ran out of time and needed to polish what we had.  Once again thanks for commenting on our game, would love a rating if you have time! thank you :)

I have played for...several hours.

This is a production ready game that can just be shipped out. Superb game! Liked the procedural floors, but they all worked and had no glitches. The difficulty was pretty good. Loot system, mobs, puzzles, bosses were all fantastic.

I didn't finish though, got to lvl 14, just after the Annihilator. I don't suppose there was much left to go but I didn't have any more time.

If there's anything to complain about, I'd say that it's too long for jam game, but that's not really a complaint. THe variety was there enough to keep me trying one more floor, one more respawn.

Am so impressed!

Developer

hey we really appreciate that, yeah the last day we did so much game testing some of the team did an all nighter haha, thanks for the great review, we all took a lot of time on this project. I would agree we could probably slash a few levels out, I think we had a few too many in the jungle biome. You were almost at the final boss! Thank you for playing

Submitted

What an absolutely wonderful time, the visuals and atmosphere were top notch, the enemy designs are adorable, the UI felt and looked great (especially that minimap, the offset floor and walls is such a nice little touch).

Only played a handful of levels before I had to stop, looking forward to coming back to this one when I have more time!

Developer

thank you so much for taking the time to try our game. I’m glad you liked it and the visuals !

Submitted

Oh really nice work! How has this not been played by more people so far >.< I have not finished it yet but will later :) Impressive work!

P.s my game also has the hero as a bastard haha!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the response haha, yeah we really wanted the web browser to work but the way our game works and being 3D, lighting was a major issue, and the browser acts up when hitting escape and tab and other hotkeys in game. So we only have the download link, and unfortunately I think that really hurts plays and ratings.

Thanks for taking the time to write a response and haha I will come check out your game  and this bastard hero lol'
