Really well made game! I really like the idea of using mini games to gather ingredients!

Developer

Thanks :) I really wanted to include more but time really got ahead of me!

Controls were a little tough, but you absolutely nailed the retro feel. Fantastic job with the art and music.

Developer

Thanks dude :) I think next time I do a jam I'll to work in a group more on art/music than doing it all myself!

Submitted(+1)

Fantastic job, you nailed the gameboy feel thats for sure. As others have said, a little more onboarding could go a long way, but since you were going all in on the gameboy era, you even nailed that (i remember having to flip through a lot of manuals back in the day lol).

Think others have mentioned it as well, but the game screams gamepad and I hooked mine up and was super excited.. then was super sad haha.

Developer

Thank ya for playing :) I wasn't going to add more to the game but post-jam period I should add controller support! More an oversight than anything, probably more fun to play on a controller than keyboard

Everything was well condensed for a game boy like game! I really like your ambition, but the beggining was kinda ambigous, but once you get the gameplay it really becomes fun! It's impressive that this is your first wild jam!

Developer

Thanks for playing :) yeah the tough time getting to grips with the game has deffo been the biggest piece of feedback across these comments, but honestly I'm pretty fine with it!

Also, first wild jam yes, but I did do a bit of programming in a couple other jams within the last few weeks :)

Really impressive entry, you absolutely nailed the Gameboy vibe. The visuals, sound, and even the idea of having a manual all come together really well. The minigames for refilling ingredients were a nice surprise and added a lot more depth than I expected.

I was a bit confused at the start and it took me a couple tries to understand how to actually make drinks, but once it clicked it became really fun. I do think a tiny bit more onboarding (or clearer hints early on) would help a lot without breaking the retro feel.

Overall though, this is one of the more polished and unique entries I’ve played. Great job, especially for a first jam.

Developer

Thanks very much for playing!
The onboarding thing has definitely been a common thread - I think I might have leaned a lil too heavy on 'just read the manual', but I'm glad the game itself was just intuitive enough to figure out!
I should say just for clarity, this is my first /solo/ jam, but I have done a couple others in teams in the last few weeks :)

Very cool game. The better you remember the recepies the faster you are. Also very cool the different mini games to refill you ingredients.

BUT it is very unintuitive what to do and how to do it (after I figured it out, it was ok). Post jam I would highly recomend to adress this. Also it was confusing, that everything screams "gamepad controls" but an actual gamepad does not work.

Developer

Hey, thanks for the review :)
Fair comment about onboarding - I spent time that I would have done on a tutorial on the pdf manual instead, so will happily take a hit on that! Regarding a gamepad, I just ran out of time before being able to implement that, so I understand the confusion!

Really awesome work! Captured the GB essence perfectly and I would love to see this redone in GB Studio or something and flash it to real hardware :)

Developer

Thanks very much :) I would love to make it playable on a gameboy/emulator at some point but I'll save that for when I have the mental energy haha (no idea where to start with that)

I was instantly drawn to the "Godotboy" Gameboy cover. I liked that you spent time making a PDF manual like the old school Gameboy games. I couldn't figure out how to make the drinks at first and got game over a few times... almost gave up but once I figured out the direction combo mechanics I thought it was a brilliant and unique mechanic not seen in this jam and very on brand with a Gameboy game (gave me ideas for my next game as well!). Also I was using P/O for my A/B but I think the written directions had them reversed? These were the only constructive feedback I had. Other than that I loved the graphics, the tinny Gameboy sounds, the surprisingly deep gameplay with the mini games... very impressed you pulled all this off in 9 days. Great job for your first jam!!

Developer

Thanks for playing :) Oop, yeah just noticed the typo with O/P being the wrong way around!
Appreciate the review, tysm - I want to spend more time playing jam games but I have very much fried my brain this last week haha

Very nice game! I was surprised by the amount of things to do, the minigames to refill are very nicely done! Love the music and the art as well. Fits very well the theme, very well done and really impressive to get that in just a week!

Developer

Thanks very much :) I was really hoping to have a couple more minigames in there but that would have definitely been pushing it haha

The game is cool! The first go around I was just taking orders and thinking I was on top of the world and then i lost because I wasn't actually making any drinks. Then I figured out how to actually play the game. I think I would have preferred a little onboarding because it was confusing and I almost gave up on the game without even seeing the brewing minigames which were nice! I know you wanted to keep it like an old retro game with the pdf. Also having A/B buttons like retro consoles, but not using those for the actual controls was a little confusing and I kept pressing the wrong buttons when trying to interact with things, but eventually got the hang of it and was doing fine.

Also the music about blew my headphones out and my windows audio settings was already set under 10% lol. Even at 1/100 it was loud so I'm glad I was able to reduce the volume in the game settings

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing :) honestly I just like the idea of reading game manuals and it fit the vibe, so I'll happily lose points for skipping out on a tutorial haha. Regarding the controls though, from what I could find online, the keymapping is pretty standard for gameboy emulators!

Great idea and you completely captured the gameboy feel. Very nice work!

Developer

thankya :)

also it's nice to know the game is playable by a bear

That's what the hands are for :)

I appreciate that you stuck to your guns and wanted people to use the old fashioned manual. A lot of retro games arent 'hard' per se but they just weren't as beginner friendly and you nailed that, surpassing just looking and sounding like a retro game (both of which you did awesome at). I reached up to day 8 before throwing in the towel.

I do feel the bee minigame is a bit irregular and sometimes I could instantly catch a bee by spamming the A button, but all the other ones felt fair and were enjoyable. I also do think having an indicator square over which drink you were selecting on top of having it display at the bottom like you had would make it a bit easier to remember where you are in the scroll.

Overall great game and great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! I whipped out my battered old gameboy and played through a bunch of classics to try and get the feel set in my mind, glad it paid off :)

You're right about the bee game though! I figured being able to repeat the game very quickly balanced the randomness a smidge, but it could certainly use some tweaks

this is really nice and i love the art style but i was at first a bit confused on how to play it but when i got it it as very fun nice work i love the art

Developer

thank ya for playing! Getting the game to be simple but needing to figure out the 'knack' to it was certainly the intended design :)

This was a cool throwback to GB games. It reminded me of Game and Watch games, but everything tied together.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, that's 100% the vibe I was going for :)

Submitted(+1)

Ayyy, let's go. You nailed it!

Submitted(+1)

For now this submission is longest I have played. Fun, a lot of gameplay features. Very very good entry!

Developer

Thanks so much! As a newbie to development doing something solo for the first time, this means a lot

Hey, fellow retro consoler here, but I picked the Lynx. You did a great job in getting the original feeling. I have to admit I took less care in actually replicating the original hardware restrictions.

Very fun to play, I would suggest to add a gameboy frame to it so that you can play it on your phone, then it is an almost perfect emulation :-)

Developer

Thanks for playing! I may or may not rebuild it to be able to function on gameboy emulators, but that might be a project for when my brain has cooled off after the jam haha - noted though, I will look to make a phone build!

Submitted(+1)

WOW a really interesting game!

Developer

Thank you :) really hoped to give off olddddd gameboy vibes, wish I had more time to add other microgames to it!

Submitted(+1)

A fellow GameBoy game! Well done, impressed you were able to do all your own art and stuff during the jam! I was not as successful in that regard. You also made me realize that I mixed up the standard for Z and X oops!

Developer

Thanks man, doing sprites was honestly a nice breather from programming! I just googled the common emulator conventions for Gameboy controls and stuck with it haha
