Finally got around to playing Scythey!! Super smooth and fun gameplay, the gras-cutting mechanic was really polished and felt good to do! I spent a while just going around and cutting grass, and found some of the hats as well!!

The art works incredibly well for this game, mostly simple, big shapes and strong contrasting colors! Makes the detailed grass stand out that much more! And I love how the color pallete of the jam was used here!

Overall a great, unique concept with a good execution and polished presentation! I can really imagine this as a bigger game, where you can build more on the grass-cutting mechanic :) Stuff like quests, different upgrades, more insentives to explore, would really support the main mechanic and make it shine more!

Thank you, means a lot to hear from the Bear Game crew! : D
Very happy you played and thank you for all the kind words. ^^

Really cozy chopping grass game. Good fun game all around. Add some auto collection and it will be even better!

Really beautiful use of the color pallete, I loved the art style! The music and sounds were on point too and made the game satisfying to collect grass and to just wander around. It could have something more to the gameplay loop, like upgrades (making the player faster, more inventory storage, etc), and I know other people already pointed this, but that's how I felt when playing lol, that would make the game more replayable and engaging for more time. Very polished experience and a great entry!! (An updated version of this one in the future would be something I would play for sure, it has a lot of potencial)

Thanks for the great feedback, will keep it in mind. It would be quite neat to continue, will definitely see if is a possibility after the jam fatigue wears off. But y'know, life etc.

But if we do ever update it, will be sure to poke you about it. : >

Yess I would love to play a post-jam version of this one. I really think it has a lot of potential, but take your time don't worry, life is life

Excellent use of the color palette. The game looks beautiful and chopping the grass is very satisfying.

Developer

Thank you! : >

Good use of the given color palette, everything was very well readable! Cutting the grass and collecting it was satisfying and I liked the detail of seeing the haystack getting bigger as I collected more.
I mostly cut the grass around the farm to fill it up, since the respawn time was so quick, and only explored the map afterwards, but was happy to find the hats and points of interest :]

There seemed to be a few invisible walls that came out of nowhere in wide open places, but the map was overall well designed and visually varied with the given assets. Having a small dash or slightly faster movement speed would have made exploring easier, but that wasn't too much of a problem. I also hoped that filling the haystack that is further out would result in something special occuring (a haystack of a slightly different color alone would have made it worth it for me, haha! Like a shiny pokemon), but for now it seems to do the same thing as the one on the farm, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe getting requests, demanding special hay mixes from the player, could bring a bit more variety to the gameplay and give the player a reason to venture out? Or something like that.

The music was very nice to listen to and put me into a good, mellow mood while playing. Kudos to the whole team!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the detailed feedback!
If you liked the music should totally check out Kandy's other work, don't let them know I told you but I think is quite neat.

Curious though, the more out of nowhere invisible walls, any in particular you  are referring to?

Submitted

Hehe, noted!
As for the walls, I meant these in particular:
1. This pathway left of the little construction site

2. This space on the left, right after walking up the first ramp at the back of the map

I'm not sure if there's anything else that I'm forgetting... But it wasn't like I was just running through the field and hit a wall - it just really made me curious about where these paths were going :)

Developer

Ah! Very fair Huge thanks, and the screenies are even more appreciated.

I meant for the world feel bigger and like there would be more to explore in the future with the first one. But I guess it makes sense people would be curious and be a bit confused when they can't explore that direction. Maybe a gate would have served better. Really need to learn not to use invisible walls in places a player might actually want to go. ^^

As for the second one, there is honestly no excuse. I think I just forgot about that one. I've no idea what I  was thinking.

Huge thanks again! ^^ Some stuff for me to consider for the future there.

Cool, collectable hats! The gameplay loop is relaxing and the use of optional color scheme is well implemented. You have created a huge and beautiful world, but unfortunately there is not much reason to explore apart from the hats. Overall a great entry for the jam.

Cutting grass is incredibly satisfying, and that’s all you need in a grass-cutting game. The graphics and sound are great, too. I have to report that the windmill is haunted. When I saw it for the first time, it was spinning around the wrong axis; the second time, it was spinning normally but was strangely offset. The third time, it was completely normal... Also, the signs were very helpful when I was trying to go back to sharpen the scythe. Overall, a very enjoyable game.

Developer(+1)

That windmill haunts me too, because I have honestly absolutely no idea why or how it does this. It might just be legitimate paranormal intervention. ðŸ˜‚ Unfortunately issue was spotted like 1h before end of jam and somehow it's not even consistent between devices.

But thank you kindly for  playing, and am very happy to hear the signs did their job.

First off, I absolutely adore the visuals and the map design. It's beautiful, it incorporates the theme colors well and it really adds to the cozy atmosphere of it. Also, hats! :) Ironically, what felt a little bit lacking was the gameplay itself. I struggled a bit to understand how to get the haystacks (after filling the thingie I mean), and it wasn't particularly engaging in the long run either (like, the grass very quickly regrows, and you just go back and forth, so from gameplay perspective, 98% of the map are not needed). I think having slower respawn, coupled with upgrades (like movement speed, sharpness , carry capacity etc.) would alleviate that already quite a bit. But I think it's a great foundation, ESPECIALLY with that art style. It looks polished, professional and carefully crafted.

Developer

💜Really appreciate the kind words and feedback.
Although if I may ask one important question: Which hat was the favourite?

The polished visuals and map are really lovely, wonderful use of the color palette! The gameplay loop could be a bit more balanced, I do think it has some great potential, but from a player perspective, I don't know  what my main goals are. The rocks chipping at the scythe are an interesting obstacle, and the map is lovely. I wanted to try filling the farther haystack but I'm not sure what the benefit of going to that one would be, especially since it's so far from the grindstone. Finding a way to motivate the player to explore the map more  would be really interesting (other than the hats -- which I love!) Like if you could feed the hay to pens of animals, and increase their happiness levels, something to give a function to the hay and encourage some more movement would be awesome.

Developer(+1)

As the artist, really happy to hear you liked the visuals! And very happy for all the extra feedback.
Seems the idea of feeding the hay to something keeps coming up. If there is a chance we continue work on this, definitely something that will be kept in mind.

Hmm... game is polished and feels great to cut the grass, but it was really confusing at first when my storage is full and I've no idea what to do with it.

Then found out I can drop at the thingy. Then after fills it up, i got a stack of Hay, but I'm not sure what to do with it.

Game mechanic is done well, just missing a game loop. It will be fun if the stack can be use for something like feeding cows or burn it for night bonfire.

Also, pressing C doesnt drop my hat.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback!

Curious though, when you mean C does not drop the hat, do you mean the default hat the character has? Or the hats you put on your hat? ^^

This is such a charming little game
The low-poly style looks adorable, and the music and art REALLY elevate the cozy vibe
I collected 20 stacks of grass while listening to online classes :3 It’s the perfect kind of relaxing background game
I’d love to see it reach its full potential, but honestly, it’s already really good as is

Developer

Thank you very much, kind stranger!

very adorable experience with striking visuals and AWESOME music :>

i would personally like the game to have something (or someone?) to prove that i'm a scything master... maybe my hat could get fancier the more grass i deposit? :U

Developer(+1)

Make sure to check out Kandy's other work  if you liked the music. ~ (Sorry, can't resist shamelessly plugging a team member > : ] )

That is a neat idea though. If we decide to continue work on it will be sure to keep in mind... : >

The artstyle is very beautiful (and uses the palette well!), and the world is surprisingly broad and fun to explore. I found a hat :)

Unfortunately, I found the gameplay itself a little bit tedious. Perhaps some upgrades (wider radius, bigger bag, more durable scythe) would add some motivation to continue playing! Additionally, the exploration aspect and the resource gathering aspect do not mesh well, since you always have to return to the haystack and grindstone. This could be solved by the previously mentioned upgrades, but there's still no reason to explore as part of the main gameplay. Perhaps further out, you could find more valuable grass or something like that, idk.

Overall it's a lovely game with great atmosphere, and I think the foundations of a great gameplay experience! I hope this didn't come across as too critical; I just wanted to share some of what I was thinking while playing!

Developer(+1)

Not too critical at all, love the feedback and thanks for playing. : D

The colors are really well used. And its very satisfying and COMFY to play
