wow this is such a good game!! there's a lot of depth in the systems and how they interact with each other - what a cool game! i had a bit of trouble understanding it at first, but after i understood it, it was fun to think on constructing a good network to funnel honey to the queen!

congrats on the submission!

This was a very well polished game! I enjoyed the art, music, gameplay. Once I got going with things, it was satisfying seeing the diegetic timer(s). Since the game auto started a whole fullscreen game in the same window, I had to either go back to the game page or open it in another window to know what the controls/gameplay were.

Great gameplay! My only real complaint is the usage of the limitation by having the game seemingly reset itself every 12 minutes or so. I kept feeling like I was really getting something going and then I'd have to start all over again. I understand that this game can't go on forever, but it felt very anticlimactic.

Developer

Oh wow, nah this is a bug, thanks for letting us know! Interesting that we haven't seen it before, we've even had a few ~hour long games without issue. Can I ask what browser you were using? Also when you say it reset itself - did it just freeze, or did it wipe across the screen as if you had hit Reset Hive? Thanks so much!

I'm using Firefox, and I believe it wiped across the screen before showing me a page with a bunch of little bubbles that said like "feed queen", "collect honey" and I had to click on some bar underneath them.

Developer

Ahh cheers, could've been after you started giving honey to the queen maybe? After you start feeding honey, you only have 1 minute to feed as much as you can, then you go to the Upgrade screen for the next hive. But outside of the game description on the landing page, the only way this is communicated is a yellow countdown that appears around the Royal Chambers after you feed the first honey, which yeah just really isn't enough info for the player to go off ( -_-")

Tutorial text would clear this up if we'd got to it, but in hindsight I think we also should've focused on getting different music playing and some text pop up like "The queen is hatching, load up as much honey as you can!". The Upgrade screen itself is also barely implemented as you saw - definitely bit off just a bit more than we could chew, aha. Thanks so much for your feedback and going into detail, I really appreciate it! <3

This is a really impressive game. The mechanics are great, the art and sound design works well too, and it is quite intuitive with the ingame tooltips. My only issue is that on my first play, I had this situation that the queen tile was surrounded by solid wax.. so I was very confused what I was supposed to do lol

Developer

Haha ahhhh, I knew that would come back to bite me... cut to midnight programming like "Oh right, maybe I gotta take the time to add an edge case for its surrounded? Ehhh nah I'm too tired, it'll probably never even happen!" ;P

Glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much for playing ^-^

Super fun game! It’s really impressive to pull off a management-style system like this in such a short time. The pixel art has this rough, grainy feel that looks amazing. Loved it!

You've put a lot of thought on polishing the game, it was really cool to see how the different build interacted with each other. I was also surprised by how the kissing station can automatically kiss nectars that's produced by other kissing station, so they would have this back and forth of kissing the nectar. The slow pace and the building mechanic really reminds me of RTS games in the early game, it's very chill.

Super addictive, ended up playing this for a couple of hours! It's very satisfying and the art is lovely, the little bulgy animations are so cute and the halftones give it a distinctive look. I would have appreciated some kind of in-game tutorial as even after reading the description there were certain things like the dancing mechanic that I never really fully understood. Fantastic work anyway, thanks for sharing your game!

Omg ty so much for giving it such a thorough play through! :D Team is very glad to hear someone put it through its paces ^-^

  • 100% agree on the tutorial - we were working on it right at the end but ran out of time (we're in Australia and the final hours were very awkward local time lol). I'm definitely gonna prioritise getting a nice simple UI in as the first feature for our next jam!
  • Yeah the Dancepad ended up somewhat confusing (and slightly bugged, seems I mixed up the indicator gfx for honey and larvae). It takes the output of hexes its pointing at and drops them to the floor if they match the resource you gave it. (I.e. If you give it Pollen, it takes pollen from Holes its pointing to and drops them on the floor). So you could use it to drop food for larvae, or you can filter out objects that are clogging up your supply chains. Definitely the structure that would've benefited most from a tutorial! :P

Really addictive once you get playing! Creative idea for a game and had a lot of fun. The art also was really charming, good job!

Nice game! Interesting strategy gameplay. Art is good! I like your work with game-jam color :)

Really liked it. The art style is great, and everything feels super cute, charming, and cohesive. Once I started getting the hang of it, it became really fun trying ot make my hive more efficient each run. Watching everything slowly come together and start working was really satisfying. There's a lot packed in here with some nice polish. Really impressive for a jam game.

A really creative and cozy game! I really enjoyed trying to make my beehive as efficient as possible.

At first, I was a little confused because I didn't quite understand how the beehive and the dancepads worked, so I couldn't feed the queen. But after reading the tips, I tried again and managed to play a few loops.

The game looks very polished and is a lot of fun to play!

Music really fits but I would loved to hear some variation! :) Cozy, great game I loved running the hive

Introducing complex mechanics and systems like this in a simple and manageable way is a feat of it's own -- well done creating a whole beehive (that you clearly did your research on! This puts the Bee Movie to shame) that only takes a few minutes to learn how to navigate. The visuals are simple yet polished (and very cute!) and it's very well balanced. I got stuck the first round I played, and had to plan a bit better the second time, I like that you have to have a bit of a strategy going into it!

Took me a while to figure out what's going on but once I did I felt compelled to find the most efficient layouts for my bee hive! After I fed the queen I thought, "that's a really great game," but then there were upgrades and another level!? Awesome!

I'm curious: what're your favourite games in this genre?

Developer

Thanks so much! Glad you liked it ^-^ We were aiming for a kind of incremental like Candy Box, Berry Bury Berry, (the) Gnorp Apalogue etc but once we started playing around with the hexes a lot of strategy/automation from Starcraft, Factorio, Plate Up! etc snuck in there lol

Lots of fun, quite a lot for a game jam but it works pretty well. Music is great and the larva are chill hungry little guys.
