Description
A track about about a peculiar blade that cut into dreams instead of flesh.

This is my first time attempting this kind of dubstep-style drums, had a blast doing so !

For this track, I wanted to mix the violence and sharpness of the blade (percs and bass) with strange textures to emulate dreams, their strangeness and the way you feel out of your own mind when you're in one.

Hey! Thanks for you comments and submission! I vibe with your track many much. I have only praise for you. I enjoyed the soundscape you crafted and that mono gritty voice with slide. If you haven't tried you could layer you percussion with 2-4 variations to see if you prefer that in your mix. Like 3 different snares layered, play with the velocity, attack timing, and spot on the grid for more depth in your drums. Thanks for the tune, I really enjoy it.

Thanks for the feedback! I see what you're saying, I'll be mindful of that in the future

This is a really original take on the theme, and I didn’t expect this style, but it works well. I like the drum rhythm, the airy feel, and the synths. The way the layers come in over time feels very natural. I also like the calm section in the middle, it has a very ethereal quality, and the bass at 3:02 sounds really cool :)

Developer

Thanks so much for the feedback! Glad I managed to make it sound natural.

Yo Noah, what a cool track you've tried, and especially for the first time attempting these types of drums. I loved the opening to the track and I think over the course it kind of loses steam a bit, I think some more dynamic and interesting textures in the slower moments and then rhythmic interest in the fast paced drum sections could've helped. The melody also doesn't necessary feel like the focus here, but I like the sounds and ideas you've played with here a lot!

Developer

You're right to point out the moments of idleness n the tracks, looking back I think it could sound a lot more alive than it is rn. Thanks a lot for your feedback !

Some story text for the weapon would've been great to visualize the setting a bit more.

The vibe is nice all around, but for me the part at 03:02 felt that it needed to have a bit more going on alongside the hihats, since the hihats playng a fast rhythm felt a off to me when everything else is really mellow 😅

But still, good work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback ! Yeah honestly I had no inspiration for an y story, I just decided on a type of weapon after I finished the song which is why my description was short. I would rather not put too much time in worldbuilding and focus on the music

Submitted(+1)

The pad reminds me of some retro, PSX-style compositions that have a cybernetic world setting. However, the song as a whole seems to have a weak connection to the “Legendary Weapon” theme. Maybe add more text to your description that shows how it relates to the theme?

Developer (1 edit)

I wish I was better at managing my time so I could write proper worldbuilding tbh, thanks for the feedback !

What a good composition! You should maybe explore more in this genre, I see potential :P

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much ! I will, definitely

love this take on a theme for a legendary weapon - i agree with others who've observed that the melody's de-emphasised, and i imagine it'd be rated much higher overall if that weren't a part of the judging criteria. on its own merits, though, this is an ethereal yet dynamic track that deftly balances contrasting patterns and textures. it reminds me of some cuts from the Lunacid soundtrack, but maybe that's because the game also features a dream-themed blade. anyway, big thumbs up basically.

also for the life of me please tell me what the sound/sample you use at 0:48 is, i've been wracking my brains trying to figure out where i've heard it before!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for the feedback ! About that sample, are you talking about the chord ? It's the preset "That Comb Magic" in Surge XT, you can find it in the Plucks category. just lower the filter frequency and you'll get this sound.

Submitted(+1)

yeah the chord - i might've been thinking of the pad sound in The Day of Night (from Silent Hill 2). thanks for the info though!

Developer(+1)

I almost always use this preset, so you might hear it a lot in my music

Really cool dreamy track at the begining, i like how the drums and the synth melody literally cut through those dreamy synths exactly as in the title, great job man!

Developer

Glad I managed to properly illustrate my subject. Thanks for the feedback !

Really well made track. I like that someone went for a style like this in this jam, as the theme and the painting are easy to interpret as fantasy. You did super well with the drums considering it's your first time in this style! The biggest strength of the track in my opinion is the form, the parts flow super well and have pleasant ups and downs in terms of dynamics and intensity.

Melody Clarity 4/5

The melody can be heard clearly, it sticks out well from the texture and has it's place. I think at some parts it sounds less like the melody though, and more like a part of the overall texture.

Melody Impact 2/5

However, I don't think it's necessarily memorable in a way I think a video game theme should be. After a couple of listens, I don't think I could hum you the melody by ear, not because it's not clear but because there isn't much to grab on to if that makes sense. I feel like the melody is not in focus in this track, the meat is in the texture, structure and atmosphere.

Composition 5/5

The track as a whole is very well made. Shifts between parts are impactful, the track is dynamic and the story comes through. You clearly know your stuff.

Listenability 5/5

Not sure if this makes sense, but this is a real track that sounds like a real track and can be listened to as a real track. I would listen to this even outside of the jam!

Correlation to Theme 3/5

The track doesn't exactly scream "weapon" to me, but with your description I think it makes sense. Theme is so heavily based on personal interpretation it's always difficult to rate, I feel like your description makes a lot of sense and fits your end product, but at the same time I don't fully hear the correlation to the jam itself.

Overall this track is great, one of those tracks I'd listen to on my free time. Unique interpretation of the assignment too, even if I feel the melody could have more presence. Great work!

Developer

Thank you so much for the review ! Yeah I can definitely see the weakness in the melody impact, it's very spaced out.

The trap section and little fill there were so clean. The ambient sections were super beautiful and solid. Everything was panned really well, albeit i think the hihat in the left ear was a little too present and kind of had a monopoly over that space. the trap snare you used was a little dark and muddy in my opinion as well, i think you could've used a snappier snare with a bit more high end. But those are really all my gripes, I like the sound you developed! Looking forward to seeing you in future jams!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review ! Glad you liked it. I'll try to work on my mix, I'll be taking your feedback into account

Submitted(+1)

I really like the approach on making it sound Ambient at first, & then making it an absolute bangar after that! I do like that it's a bit like a Intense Lo-Fi-type beat to it... Very unique!

It'd be nice if I didn't have to pay to download the track during voting, if I even was interested, but other than that, I like how Experimental it sounds!

Developer

Oh man I didn't realise it was a mandatory payment, I'll set it to free asap. Thanks for the feedback nonentheless!

Developer

Double checked, there is a suggested donation but it's optional, though there isn't any download

Submitted

Okay! Feel free to make it paid after voting ends though, & you got the download set-up, if you'd like.

Love the vibes dude, Mixing quality is amazing, and I would have no clue this was your first try at dubstep type drums, sounded super legit 100% I wasn't too sure how the 808 breakdown part, it sounded mostly nice, but the first 808 tone that came through, and popped up throughout that section, sounded kind of out of tune to me for some reason, for the most part that section was super cool, just that one tone didn't sit quite right with me.

Love the unique interpretation on the theme, whole track was killer dude, well done! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I kinda rushed the mix, so I'm glad it ended up sounding good. The 808 part was done towards the end of the deadline so it might've been a bit rushed,  I'll try to be careful next time I use it.
